Definitely. As we said, it would be good to see England temper their approach with the bat a little bit - pick their moments a little better. The approach is to risk losing in order to give you a chance of winning, which is commendable but we obviously want to see us win this series. Here’s hoping they can find that balance in approach.

Huge for Australia, away fixture, lose the toss, slow outfield on last day, a pitch that drew the fangs of their attack, looked dead and buried, but won. Dont mind the declaration, a gambit, probably just about worth it at the time, not black and white. What is obvious to me is that picking a second rate keeper just to add a seventh batsman to a line-up that already bristled with attacking ability and intent was a shocker and cost the match. Catches win matches, drops and missed stumpings lose.... throw in 23 no-balls, unprofessional indiscipline must leave the Aussies asking if that is Bazball bring it on. Australia's approach delivered a huge win and they managed to squeeze 216 over out of a tired old looking bowling attack while only bowling 144 themselves. a very big 1-0.

Aussie fan here. Please keep picking Moeen Ali, 3 wickets for 200 odd runs, we will take that everytime. Acknowledge Ali can bowl the odd great wicket taking ball, the Green wicket was a fantastic delivery, but bowls so many loose deliveries. You failed to acknowledge Nathan Lyon's 8 wickets on that dead pitch plus his partnership with Cummins. The biggest advantage the Aussies have is Lyon's ability to lock down one end allows our fast bowlers to rotate and not "over bowl". With the 5 tests over 6 weeks, our fast bowlers will be far fresher than Englands thanks to Lyon: Cummins bowled 32 overs in the match (Hazlewood and Boland about 25 each), in comparison Broad, Anderson and Robinson bowled roughly 42 overs each.

Great points - and apologies we didn’t get chance to focus too much on the Australian players. Definitely something we’ll do more if as we go through the series. Lyon is just so good at what he does. We massively missed Leach to give us that control Moeen just can’t give anymore

@@TheLeadingEdgePodcast no need to apologise, the main talking points post match are English selections and possible changes for the next test and of course Bazball. Root played great, but to get out for 40 odd in the second innings to a stumping, in the current form Root is in, I think was reckless and wasteful. You have to "cash in" and convert starts into big scores.

The issue with the declaration isn't just that England might have scored another 15 runs, it's that Australia did score 14 in that period. That's a potential 30 run swing which ended up being so important come the end of the match.
@TheLeadingEdgePodcast
@TheLeadingEdgePodcast Год назад
Fair. But the point i tried to make is that the declaration was worth the risk. What cost us the game - and what was waaay more important that 10,20,30 runs - was the amount of missed chances in both innings or batters losing their minds when set and dancing down the track and getting stumped.. that’s why we lost a very close game in the end. Well done to AUS for holding their nerve and getting over the finish line. I'm not bothered about the declaration. I like the way Stokes throws down the gauntlet. Though, I would like to see the the batters, especially Root, not giving away their wickets so easily. Play aggressive, but smart with it. ENG created enough chances in AUS 1st innings to restrict them even more. Maybe the lack of match practice prior has cost them these opportunities.
@SilentHotdog28
@SilentHotdog28 Год назад
Yeah it wasn't the Dec that cost England, smart decision in my eyes, I know it didn't pay off, but it was getting darker, good time to bowl, especially to opening partnership. It was the 2nd innings that cost the match, all England had to do, was slow down a little, not a lot, just ease the foot off the pedal a little bit and not play so many stupid shots. There is reckless aggression and there is controlled aggression, Root for the first time in his career was stumped due to reckless aggression. It was ultimately a very close test, things could have easily gone either way on multiple occasions.

A bit harsh to call Root out over any of the other batsmen...he scored 118 not out and 46. England played how they play and it just didn't quite work out to be enough on this occasion. If every match is going to be like this, then Test Cricket will truly be 'revived' and talked about a lot, especially now that Australians - and a few other nations - are now determining this series as 'Cumball v Bazball'. And, as an Australian, I don't want every game to come down like it did today. My heart rate was about 150bpm+ for a solid hour, and I feel like I lost about 5kg with how nervous and jittery I was. But despite everything, no matter who wins - or somehow draws the series - it's going to be up there like the 1948 Invincible Ashes, 1989 Ashes, and the 2005 Ashes.

So I think we took a more negative approach to feel it out, so to speak, and we saved a lot of runs with it. Who knows, in the next tests to come, we might play a bit more aggressively. Not English Umbrella field aggresive, but maybe one or two fielders in a more conventional/odd catching position. --- And yes, I feel like this series will be the death of us... exhaustion wise.

@@TheLeadingEdgePodcast Historically Australia has been the aggressive side, while England have been the defensive side. Australia came into this series not knowing how things will go since we are usually the aggressors. Now there would have been a game plan, since Bazball usually banks on batting 2nd, but Stokes through the script out the window and bat first.......so then Aus probably went "Well crap.......we barely had an idea of what to do before...........now what do we do?" So that's probably why we saw such a defensive style of gameplay from Aus.

The issue the bazball apologists keep ignoring is that England won the toss on a road in blazing sunshine and lost. The reason why people take issue with the declaration is because winning that toss on that pitch should negate the possibility of losing that test. Maybe you don’t win, but you certainly don’t lose. England contrived to lose that test . Plus that entertainment thing is nonsense because the reason why the public in both countries buy into the ashes is because they believe that “the result of this matters”. If the result doesn’t matter and it’s all about the entertainment - this is just a random odi series that no one cares about but there will be some big hits. Lastly, this is a 5 match series and australia are playing the long game. England have a bowling attack with two old men and a spinner who hasn’t played in 2 years - all of whom need to be managed in order to not keel over (that has failed already). Australia would’ve been happy if this game was a draw but they kept England bowling for days on end in order to increase the chances that England’s bowlers would break down. In the end, they won anyway - but they also ruined Moin’s finger and broad looked knackered.

I think what no one seems to take into account is 5 tests in 6 weeks, if Australia are keeping England in the field for an extra 64 overs every match (like in this match) by the 4th or 5th test their fast bowlers will be cooked, especially without a reliable spinner.

Yep. Spot on. These flat tracks are so disrespectful to the likes of Broad and Anderson. With injuries to a few other quicks, we’ll soon be in the next tier of seamers if we overbowl that pair.

On the send off from Ollie Robinson, don't judge the reaction of "Australians" by a few comments you can find. You can find media commentators and Twits to complain about anything. You summed it up best by pointing out that Kawaja had just got 140+. It's not offensive, it's just a bit stupid. He's a fast bowler, you want him to be overdosing on angry pills. You mentioned Glenn McGrath, who seemed to have a form of Tourettes - although mainly at himself. I don't know any Test cricket fan here who did anything other than raise their eyebrows briefly and shrug their shoulders, before moving on. As did the team. If anyone on the team complained, we would be horrified. The only ongoing issue will be the targeting of Robinson to see if he can both dish it out and take it. If he can, fair enough. Genuine question: who actually complained? Any current or ex-players? Happy to condemn their hypocrisy with you if there are.

Great comment. I’m not sure who kicked off tbh. It’s just tumbled out of nowhere and was then everywhere for a day or so. Probably our own media first 🤷‍♂️ although Hayden’s nibble was brilliant. All we know is Broad is gutted he’s no longer public enemy number 1 thanks to Robbo 😂

don't get the argument that there wouldn't have been enough time in the game if not for the Stokes declaration. Why would everything have happened the exact same way if they declared on 420 or more? Australia could have felt more under the pump with early wickets and crumbled under the pressure of a big chase. Australia could have batted slowly for 2 days and declare 120 in front and Lyon spins us to victory... There are an infinite number of possibilities that don't include Australia and England making the exact same totals in the exact amount of overs following a later declaration.
@TheLeadingEdgePodcast
@TheLeadingEdgePodcast Год назад
England could have put up 420 and still lost.. May as well have rolled the dice with that declaration then. If Broad gets his 2 wickets on the day 1 eve it was a genius decision 🤷‍♂️

@@TheLeadingEdgePodcast exactly there are an infinite number of possibilities. That's why I think saying England couldn't have won if Stokes declared on Day 2 is ridiculous. @@TheLeadingEdgePodcast not sure how u can say no harm? it gave more time for Australia and less runs to chase. Australia will grind England down. England will not back down w.r.t bazball cricket and they can only bat this way on flat tracks. I find this a but too partisan noone talks negatively about Stokes being defensive before the match by irdering foat wickets fir the series. The Uk press loves to have a go at India for their pitch dictiring when tiyring there. Wngland also had the best bstting conditiobs except for 20 minutes and the best bowling on ovecast conditions days 2 and 5. They were also 5 down in both innings for not alot saved oniy by Root and Bairstow on the 1st. If they batted more sensibly day one tgey could of declared day 2 and had real scireb8ard pressure. Less thatn 400 wasnt a par score and let Australia off the hook. The 2nd innings they were way under par, they wanted 350 but noone made a 50 and the tail added nearly 70.

We’d won 11 from 13 tests.. after one 2 wicket defeat i’d say it’s a bit early to focus too much on the negatives so we didn’t. We recorded this shortly after a brilliant 5th day of a great test had played out. It deserved the positivity no matter the result. Tracks.. it’s an issue for sure and there are some parts we did criticise. It’s all about perspective, with the right balance in this approach, it can work as it has proved. Whether it will against this Australian team is absolutely up for debate but they have to play the games to see what will happen! Can’t wait for it to play out.

@@TheLeadingEdgePodcast what I mean is there seems to be no or very little criticism of anything Stokes does. Let's just see how wedded to entertainment the Pomms are when they are 4 for 30??? Let's look at the positives for England. Their over rate was greater than OZ. They were so much better entertainers. They only just lost the match and OZ just made it by the skin of their teeth. They beat Napoleon at Waterloo. They conquered two thirds of the world but bloody well lost the first Ashes to OZ because they were far better entertainers and decidedly worse cricketers and we're tactically outclassed by OZ. They have better statistics than OZ to prove they are a better side and on and on and on and bloody on. Just be magnanimous in defeat, congratulate the victor for a deserving win and stop justifying why England are a better side and should have won.
