This is the deadliest example of the butterfly effect. Basically one simple assassination made the 20th and even the current century what it was/is. WW1, WW2, the Holocaust, the Cold War(in all of its facets), and the mess of wars of the Arabian countries, all stem because of Princep killing Ferdinand in Sarajevo. This is probably one of if not the most important assassinations in the entirety of human history.
The assassination didn't lead to the war. The war was bound to happen. The assassination just gave an excuse to Austria-Hungary to declare a war on Serbia because if they did it without a reason, if they lost the war they would have to deal with big consequences.
I was thinking the same exact thing. If this assassination had never taken place it's interesting to speculate what might/would have happened. If a time machine were ever invented and these events could be stopped who knows what the consequences might be? Chances are some of us might never have been born or might be living in a different country. World history might have been better or maybe even worse than what happened since that day. No way to tell but it's intriguing to speculate. I'm sure our lives would have taken quite different paths.
Without WWI, there would have been no WWII, or even the Bolshevik Revolution. Hundreds of millions lives would have been spared. And the moral? Always tell your driver where you are going.
I don't know. I've thought a lot about this, and I think with the lessening of religious power, and the rise of nationalism and mutual protection agreements, global conflict was becoming increasingly inevitable. Something would have eventually set it off.

I read/skimmed MEIN KAPMPF (SP) when I was junior in high school. MRS. BENEDITTI taught World History II when I was a senior. She took us through WWI and no further. Hitler wasn't mentioned in class. The name if the organization was Unity or Death ( unity of all southern slavs in one country) it was later known as the black hand (black hand was one if their founding symbols including a handgun and a bayonette) this was the organization that plotted the assasination of Serbian king Aleksandar Obrenovic in 1903.
Franz Ferdinand never wanted to rule all of Austro-Hungary. He wanted to give many of the Balkan states self determination, and his portrayal in this paints him as a unhinged and ignorant man.

To add to the provocation they’ve organized military manouvers (which is what Ferdinand was there for) on the 28th June thr anniversary of Battle of Kosovo in 1389- the most sacred date and event in Serbian history. Their doctrine of how to disciplin the locals was 30 years after adopted by the nazis who used to kill 100 Serbian civilians for a single german soldier killed in battle by the Serbian guerrila after Yugoslavian army collapsed in 1941.
Austro Hungary illegally annexed Bosnia in 1905 and that was the turning point which led to Sarajevo assassination. And in 1999 the same mistake was again made in Balkans which eventually led to what we are seeing today in Ukraine. Bottom line-European powers will never learn

You know, WWI, WWII, and the Cold War would have never happened if a sandwich hadn't been eaten. I made a relatively short-lived 2-page paper on it. I'm sure the history geeks will prove me wrong, but I hope you enjoy my little paper nonetheless. Franz Ferdinand, the crown prince of Hungary, was going on a ride in a street of Bosnia when his driver mistakenly took a wrong turn, and by chance bumped into a Serbian revolutionary named Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo had recently tried to assassinate Ferdinand but failed to do so and accidentally bombed a police car behind him instead. Ferdinand heard the news and wanted to visit the injured officers. Gavrilo was angry at his recent failure, and he went to a cafe. At the cafe, he ordered a sandwich when he saw Ferdinand’s car cruising down the nearby street. The revolutionary, seeing the opportunity, instantly shot Ferdinand and his wife, who both succumbed to their injuries. Their death led to a declaration of war by Austria-Hungary (supported by Russia) on Serbia, the country assumed responsible for the assassination. Soon, the frenzy was joined by other countries like Germany, France, and Britain due to several diplomatic treaties signed during that time, which altogether blew into a full-scale world war. If World War I had not happened, Versailles’s treaty would have never been made leading to Germany’s humiliation. He sent an expedition to the country for the same, but by then, World War I had erupted. The appliances which the expedition had carried were confiscated by the Russian army, and Einstein waited for years for the war to be over. Naturally, he grew desperate and anxious, cursing his luck all throughout this time. One day, while skimming through his calculations, he realized he had committed some errors in his equations. He re-engineered them and sent a fresh expedition once the war was over. The pictures, which finally arrived, proved his theory correct. I honestly think Franz Ferdinand would've died even if Princip missed or the driver didn't took a wrong turn. Butterfly effect and all. For example, I think they would've shot him when he exited the hospital.
The missed* grenade was intentional, but was supposed* to be what got Ferdinand. The guy throwing it, got second feelings about what he was doing, and why he intentionally missed. Hes also the only one whos family name still exists.

Dont forget the sad irony that Franz Ferdinand was sympathetic toward Serbia and often was at odds against Conrad von Hötzendorf who repeatedly called for harsher treatment and war. Ferdinand was rightfully cautious that war with Serbia would cause Russia to fight against Austro-Hungary. When the Serbians killed Ferdinand, they took out the one guy that could rise to power and keep Conrad at bay to keep stability in the region.

Princip was smart. He led a tragic life and perished from torture, malnutrition, TB in 1918. Not justifying what Princip did, but worth mentioning that no one was ever prosecuted for torturing a shackled prisoner.
What triggered the war was the occupation of someone else's land. Try it yourself go occupy a part of your neighbors land and see how long before you start a war with them. Moral of the story land grabs end in war one way or another its called greed.

On the 28th of June, a very special date in Serbian history, archduke makes this public drivethrough without any army protection whatsoever in a not very hospitable province... I really find it hard to believe this was a coincidence. Such an empire, letting the heir to the throne to go in the masses without any protection... As someone was really begging this to happen and had the intelligence info that it will happen, given the opportunity.
Archduke was plain stupid man. To put it into perspective: He came into Bosnia shortly after it was annexed into empire against the will of the local people who struggled against the ottomans for centuries. He literally arrived and made a conquerors parade on Vidovdan which is the most important date for Serbians who celebrate their fight for independence on that day. He ignored the obvious warnings from his staff, he disregarded the grenade attacks, he even brought his wife into this mess, if that is not stupid i don't know what it is.

He was member of Young Bosnia, not the Black Hand. Organisations had close ties, but the Hand later decided not to support the assassination, Young Bosnia still decided to carry it out. Serbian government had nothing to do with the assassination, they even warned Austrian government about possible incidents, since rumors of assassination started circling. In conclusion, Austria had no justification for war.
Thank you Serbia! If it wasn't for your stubbornness, many countries in Central Europe wouldn't have had regain their independence in such sudden coincidence. Austria-Hungary with all its minorities was a very unstable state and it was only a matter of time before its collapse, but who knows how long it would've taken if it wasn't for Serbia. If you think about how many coincidences there were on the day that Archduke Franz Ferdinand died. The first attempt failed, and just because he wanted to visit the victims of the first bombing after his speech and his driver had not been informed of the change in route, he drove past Princip and was shot.
