The astonishing Mendenhall Glacier discoveries
Narration: Watch part of Mendenhall Glacier plunging from the immense Juneau Icefield in Alaska dropping 4 500 feet over 13 miles. Its active face regularly carves big icebergs and brush into its lake. Punctuated by waterfalls and lush forests the glacier's rugged and creviced reach anchors an extraordinary mountain vista this natural setting in both summer and winter is one of the most spectacular and interesting in Alaska
Mendenhall Glacier is approximately 19 kilometres (12 miles) from Juneau which is the capital of Alaska. Most of Juneau lies on the mainland of Alaska surrounded by scenic mountains and the Juneau Icefield (a large area of ice and snow). It is certainly a picturesque location which draws visitors to the area.
From Mendenhall Lake you will canoe with an experienced guide to the Glacier. The trip can accommodate up to 14 guests (minimum age 12 years) at a time, and no experience is necessary. Your guide will steer you.
As the gigantic blue wall of the glacier approaches, keep an eye out for wildlife which includes: arctic terns, mountain goats, bald eagles etc. Also watch ice falls where the glacier breaks into jagged blocks and spills over the mountainous slopes in grand fashion.
And a highlight of the trip is the viewing of the 377 foot “Nugget Falls”. Field by the meltwater run-off from Nugget glacier the falls plunders in 2 curtains - 99 feet and 278 feet.
Your guide will point you to the best viewing spot of the falls along the lake shore near its base.
Next you will experience the rocky sediment around the blue ice before landfall. Trade your paddles for hiking poles and off you go.
A photographers haven you will be overwhelmed with what to photograph first. It is a detailed informative hike and your guide will educate you what was happening in the world at the time of the ice formations.

Alaska Tourism says, “The visitor center features a multitude of museum quality exhibits, while the outdoors offers beach access and many hiking trails, including the mossy rain forest stroll to the base of Nugget Falls.
Alaska is the land of glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, fjords, forests, tundra and meadows. “ Alaska is the largest state of the United States in the area. However it has a relatively small population.
Alaska Native people’s ancestry can be traced back hundreds of thousands of years to when the first descendants crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Asia to North America. Today, Alaska Native people make up about 15% of Alaska’s total population, with 229 federally recognized tribes living across the state. Many still practice traditional subsistence hunting and fishing, while others have blended their customs and traditions with a Western lifestyle. Alaska’s Native people are divided into 11 distinct cultures. These cultures are categorized by similarities in tradition, language and geographic regions. From the Inupiat of the Arctic Slope region above the Arctic Circle to the Tlingit of the Inside Passage, cultural diversity is a hallmark of the state.
