Just look what happened to the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit Michigan. It kills me that anymore no one seems to care about history! I with you on what you say. 👍😎🇺🇸
Typically Texans don't clean up their own messes . just like their oil industry drills wells then up and leaves the site for someone else to clean it up.
It’s not wooden the thing can stand for hella I’m sure it’s built to stand for a minimum 100 years It’ll be fine worst case just transform it into a jail
If I’m not wrong the last time that it had people inside was when Katrina hit New Orleans. It was used as a mass shelter for everyone that was coming from Louisiana.
The very last event there was the MLK battle of the bands. By that time there wasn't even astroturf on the field and the seats were tore up from Katrina evacuees
When the Astrodome opened it was a big, big deal. Astronauts in space, massive indoor baseball field for the first time, no rain delays, UCLA vs Houston NCAA/ Lew Alcindor vs Elvin Hayes, and tons more. 8th wonder of the world when it opened.
Actually it was November 1984 - the Victory Tour. I went with a group of 20 girls in a private box and chartered bus so remember little about the performance. 😊
@Eduardolluvioso went to that concert. My sis was a local dj. They were GIVING AWAY tickets because they didn't sell out. When the victory tour was planned they only had one stop in Texas and that was Dallas. At the last minute they scheduled a houston stop. This was AFTER everybody drove to Dallas already....So a lot of people were pissed...and they could sell tickets. The tour ended like a few months later when Micheal backed out.
Michael did not perform the first moon walk there, in fact it was performed by him first on live TV for a Mo-Town special, and Michael didn’t nor was he the first person to moon walk. He made it popular, the first moon walk was performed in the 1940’s by another Foundational Black American.
I just read your comment and as you said you went to concerts there tell how many people does it hold and just a little fun extra who did you go and see in concert there, me thinking it be someone big to fill this stadium. Regards from the U.K.
@jeremyandrestevenson2313 It used to be home for the livestock show and rodeo for many years and many country acts would play after the rodeo. Other shows included a number of rock concerts also. I saw Elvis in the 70s along with the Rolling Stones,ZZ Top,and many more. It seated around 50 thousand for some of those shows. Good times 😊
@Charles-mk3wn Thankyou for reply WOW you seen Elvis not that ive ever been into but I understand how big a deal it is ... And not that I know you but you are definitely the first person I've ever spoke to so to say who's seen the man himself live oh and the Rolling stones as well, cool, I've actually had the privilege of seeing them. And like I said before I can't believe it was built so long back in 63 this really shocked me as it looks to modern. Regards from the U.K Jeremy...
Fun fact. The engineering was figured out by Louis Bass who was one of my architectural engineering instructors when I was at Oklahoma State in the 80s. He made all the calculations manually many many years earlier. Nobody could review his work it was so complex. So he worked with Hewlett Packard to design one of the first engineering programs with the purpose of verifying his manual calculations. Once the HP program was able to verify the numbers, they proceeded with construction. Into the 90s, Bass was the engineer of record of every domed stadium in the world. He carried a pocket watch in a leather pouch tucked into his shirt pocket....because he was allergic to steel.
@@smith97320 Read it again. I did not say he developed the programs in the 80s, I said I was in his classes in the 80s. A lot of clues as to what was happening when, so maybe read it again.
My grandfathers construction company used to do all the dirt work for the monster truck shows, moto cross, thrill show spectaculars and other stuff in the 1980s and 1990s
Was batboy there for Astros. Also press runner/ballboy before moving up in the show. As pressrunner, we worked every event. Rodeo, motocross, Astros, Oilers, college football, high school football games. Concerts, Kool Jazz Festival, monster truck, tennis, . We had free rein to go anywhere in the dome. Even worked the made for tv movie Murder at the World Series and Bad News Bears 2. Met Jamie Lee Curtis and her mom Janet Leigh while mom filmed movie. Cool job, met lots of celebs. Travelled with stros, own locker in clubhouse. Fond memories. 😮
I had the honor of cleaning out the Astrodome and sending all of the hazardous waste for proper disposal many years ago. It is a magnificent building and I would love to see it renovated into a thriving complex one day. My parents bought me a charm bracelet with an Astrodome charm when I was 10 years old and it is a piece that I will cherish forever.
as a native houstonian, i can confirm that this hurts all houstonians all over the city to know that the astrodome is falling apart, i say we stop sending money to other countries and put a little bit of money into the astrodome to preserve this amazing piece of houston history.
Yea I agree on not sending money to other countries. I'm in Washington state & basically the same thing happened with the King dome. It only lasted from 77 to 2000 or so.
@ZULUONE so you’re saying you’d rather your taxes go to a war in someone else’s backyard rather than preserve a piece of history that belongs to the greatest state in america? bless your heart.
@@xptics why preserve something that’s just decaying? Some parts history needs to be tore down, get over it, are we gonna keep NRG too, cause it’s the first retraction roof in NFL?
Hey dude, I’m from Ohio. When I was a little boy, about four or five years old, my grandfather took me to a car dealership. There was Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Johnny bench. I spoke to one of them and got signed pictures from all of them, and then promptly lost them, . thrilling memory
Wow! I remember the drive from Galveston Island in the late 80s to the mid 90s headed to AstroWorld, WaterWorld and the AstroDome for motocross, Monster Truck, tractor pulls, concerts, the rodeo... it sure breaks my heart to see such an iconic landmark that so many Texans and travelers made so many memories at just go to ruin. It's not the coliseum and in 500 years no one is gonna be like... "look what we unearthed! It's some kind of ancient arena that an ancient peoples of the Houstonian tribe hosted tribal ceremonies here." Tear it down or bring back to life. Just don't let it go to ruin and think it will fall down on its own and will be someone else's problem in 30 to 50 years.
Turn it into a fooball museum..all the great Oilers/Texans and players across the NFL. You could still hold concerts to create money as well. Love Ya Blue And Go Texans 🤘
I would like to see TNA wrestling since you’re coming back in 2024. I would like to see them to do their taping’s are there at the Astrodome in Houston Texas
Saw the Astros play there around 1970 and saw Ringling Bros Circus! Great memories and when they tore astroworld down it was literally there one week and totally gone the next,
It needs to have an amusement park built inside of it. If you remember standing in line ,in the Texas heat to ride the cyclone or the greased lightning. You know how awesome ut would be standing in that line again but in an air conditioned stadium.
They are NOT going to turn the Astrodome into a strip club. Families come to Reliant Stadium, and people are not going to bring their children to a stadium with a strip club next to it, plus, city ordinances forbid that. Let's use common sense.
Before it was built, there was a large amusement park on that spot called Playland Park. I went to many things in the Astrodome: Astros games, concerts, rodeo. I saw Tina Turner driven to the stage in a Cadillac convertible!
Is that where Playland Park was? I went to a Playland Park when I was really little. There was a train in the parking lot that drove us up to the park. It looked like a dragon I think. There was a ride that was just a small thing with wheels and you pedaled it around a track. Is that the park that was there before the Astrodome?
There was nothing more exciting as a kid than watching the Oilers and how loud the Astrodome was. I never got to see an Oiler game live, but as a kid in Dallas, it was the coolest thing on tv. There is just something special about the old stadiums and the atmosphere they had.
We build homes , businesses and factories that are used for generations. Many are well over 100 years old in Texas. Stadiums are good for 20-30 years? Why?
I’m no expert but I can imagine it’s something like the cost of keeping such a large structure “Up to Code” especially when ‘The Code’ (😂) changes so often
Got to keep up with the Jonses. Everyone wants a bigger, fancier stadium just like the latest major league team just got. There was nothing functionally wrong with the ability to host baseball and football. The privately owned teams just want bigger and better stadiums paid for by the taxpayers that then pay huge prices to see the games. In the early years of the Dome a front row seat behind the visitor's dugout was $3.50; about $35 corrected for 2024 inflation. I sat through many games there as a kid.
That's always cracked me up about the Houston Rodeo. Everyone says they went to the rodeo to see such-and-such band. Not many went for the rodeo. It was so big, though, that there were usually only a couple of major events each night. Smaller rodeos have everything every night.
I went to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo there, saw Chicago in concert there and Cheap Trick rhrew a free concert in the parking lot, saw motocross and monster truck rallies there all in the 80's. Also had season passes to Astroworld/Waterworld a couple of years. So sad to see these closed.
Watched my only live baseball game here while on holiday in 1989, Houston Asrtos vs I can't remember, I still have the Astros cap and shirt I bought. I had a great time.
As an American who doesn’t enjoy sports it’s hard to watch my tax dollars being spent on sports arenas when we have community needs that aren’t being met.
It's called corporate welfare as much money they make they pay huge salaries to players and employees and owner gets the rest. meanwhile poor taxpayers get stuck with the stadium bill I'm not a huge fan of that either.
Glad the Fabulous Forum survived and is back as a music venue which is my best memories of that building! Sorry, the Los Angeles Sports Arena didn't survive which also hosted many memorable concerts. Additionally, the Santa Monica Civic is closed due to seismic risk with its fate unknown.
@@Snatcher_Catcher lmao no it ain’t 😂😂 i’m a native houstonian and everyone ik there who is native is red, but the dipshits from california have invaded and took over. houston is a “dump” because of how industrial most of the city is, outside of 5th ward, 3rd ward, acres homes, sunnyside, south park, and greenspoint houston is an amazing place to live.
Man Remember the times i used to go to Astroworld back in the 90s. Texas Cyclone Greezed Lightning Ultra Twister. These were the fun times of childhood. Especially for Halloween.
I went to the very last Monster Jam in the Astrodome, then the very first in Reliant Stadium. The new stadium has less floor space and fewer seats. It's a total letdown. Now, Astroworld/Waterworld closing was one of the most underhanded and sinister things to take place on a large scale. Sold for a short term gain on paper, but cost more to tear down than it was sold for. Now, it's still in litigation and being used as a 25 acre parking lot for the Reliant complex.
1. The number one facility for mental health care shouldn't be the Harris County jail. 2. Get rid of the stigma of 'everybody needs a car to be employed'. One doesn't mean the other. 3. 24 hour transit service. City is too big not to jave it no matter 'how dangerous' it is. We have more police departments inside the loop than some states have
@davidbryant3532 how is anything I said 'liberal'? Our county jails shouldn't be mental health clinics and people who don't own cars should be able to be hired at a living wage. Nothing liberal about that
About 20 years ago maybe longer we were in Houston to the ladies of the Houston headache clinic and that was part of the deal that we did the Houston Astrodome to her and they had just got finished with the whatever the big rodeo they have there every year !!!
Spent many hours, in that stadium, from 1975 to 1995...watching my Astros. It was a real treat for us kids to get to go there, and see our baseball heroes. Cesar Cedeno, Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, JR Richards, Craig Biggio, and Jeff Bagwell...to name a few. The Astrodome...was so cavernous...it was an awe-striking experience. I miss it.
There was nothing like the atmosphere for a baseball game in the Dome. The ring of lights 360° around the field, the sounds, the scoreboard and the visual saturation of color were unique. The sense of space was amazing; something I have never felt in any other stadium.
It was once on the list “ Wonders of the World “ Because it the first man made structure with out roof supports. And glass dome. The structure holding up the roof is amazing out of this world. That’s why it called ASTRO-DOME. Would be perfect for hockey, soccer, indoor casino.
Me and family toured the Astrodome back in the mid 70's.Tour guide took up to the balcony,Wow!!That view looking down was scary!😳A LONG way down!!The balcony seats were at a very sharp angle!!
Everything that he said is straight facts and one of the reason why the Houston orders left because the city of Houston didn't want to build a new stadium for the Houston oilers that's why they left and move to Tennessee
Oilers owner Bud Adams did nothing to build goodwill in the community. Houston loved the Oilers but hated Bud Adams. After their departure to Tennessee was announced, sports radio talk show callers started their conversations with, "Bye, Bud!" regardless of what else they wished to discuss.
As a Houstonian I’ve done work a few years ago inside the old stadium. We would ride in golf carts into the depths of the stadium . There are lots of old Astros hidden gems in there. We even went to the roof and looked over the city.(New NRG Stadium too) Im glad I had a chance to explore this precious stadium. Lots of childhood memories in there 😢
When i was in middle school i was in band and we got a chance to walk out on the field before an astros game and play the star spangled banner. Such a cool memory. Going to the astrodome for the various events was a normal part of growing up in houston as a 90's kid.
There was a made for TV movie where a swarm of Killer Bees was corralled into the stadium to kill them with cold air - or was it the Superdome - 1976 thereabouts.
As a fellow Houstonian, it really breaks my heart for this to sit and rot. In 2023 there was some news about In and Our burger make their HQ there, but it never happened.
I've actually been to the Astrodome once, it was in 2000 personally, it was awesome. My favorite part was the large amount of panels that let the light pass through it that were on the top. I always thought of it as like an alien space ship. Either way it was pretty nice.
Houstonian here, I remember when they closed it down. Pretty shocking.. Now it's used to temporarily to house ppl during hurricanes and deathly floods.
