The ASUS ROG Mothership (GZ700) is an crazy gaming laptop, if you could call it that, it’s more like a tablet desktop replacement. The overclockable Intel i9-8950HK and Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics are powerful, but that’s not even the interesting part. The keyboard can be completely detached from the screen, as the heat generating hardware is behind the screen, allowing for improved airflow and performance.

It’s the price that’ll keep this design going anywhere for the next few years if at all. I get it, research and development, I totally understand. At least the 51m starts at $2550 with a desktop 8700 and a 2070. Spec it out a bit with a Gsync 144 and a 9700k for under $2900 and it’s “attainable”

Having owned the ASUS G703VII for over a year now i can confirm that their anti dust fans are amazing! i opened up my laptop for a yearly service clean fans replace the thermal paste. and I'm telling you this.. not one bit of dust! was on the fan vents. a little bit was on the fans themselves but nothing like my other laptops very impressive. thermals have been amazing my G703VII. cpu has been oced to 4.2ghz and my gtx 1080 is oc to 2.1ghz that's not even me under volt as the stock volt is +0.020v. i have owned a lot of laptops in my time all the big brands. but must admit i really like there engineering!

Same thought as you OWNorDisown. Its not possible have it in lap if not touchscreen becuase how you need the keyboard. If It would be toucscreen. I probably to 99% would buy! I would had loved to have 1444p or anyhting higher then the 1080p. Some great soundcard so headphones are utlized to max. But no deal breakers. But no touch with that layout and design will be tough.

Did you get to pick it up, what's the weight like? It looks pretty heavy. I expect we'll start seeing a few more gaming PCs in this form factor soon because the cooling makes a lot of sense. Really they could have made the back shell out of aluminium then the middle and front plastic. Milling the prototypes out of aluminium makes sense, but then it's cheaper to mass produce by making injection moulds for plastic. The upper half of the keyboard section is wasted space. It makes more sense to permanently affix the keyboard back half with a yoga type hinge and have that front cover section split in the middle, leaving you with a L shaped computer with a battery in the base of the L and a beefy separate keyboard. This will save the volume and weight of the kickstand too. I bet you''ll see that form factor within a year.

Yeah I moved it a few times to film it on different angles, fairly heavy, the spec sheet I have estimates it at approx 4.7KG/10.3LB

I believe the 29th is the Nvidia embargo so not sure if anyone can provide stuff before that without signing an NDA, I don't actually know the details, either way I have a few lined up for some time after that, just hope it doesn't take too long for Australia teams to get the new models, usually it can take us a bit longer to get stuff.

Hope so! In theory the cooling is a little upgraded to trinity boost + and the touchpad is a little wider than the original GS65.

I'm really excited for it! It's just like a gaming all in one but portable! I hope ROG will make the mothership with less bezels at the future and at list upgrade the GPU to RTX 2080ti and with the performance of a PC or at least like the Alienware area 51m.

I want this soooo bad! But I’m going to wait for the next one to come out. The resale value will be a lot lower and it will be harder to sell since it’s coming out in 2019. Plus, I want thinner bezels! If it had thin bezels this would be perfect!

I can't say I see the market for it though besides being innovative. Maybe large form factor power house laptops are making a come back? Very curious to see if this design can keep the 8950HK cool. I don't know about laptop parts as the laptop 2080 specs aren't out yet, but on the desktop side the 1080 is 180w while the 2080 is 215w

It means you can press down all keys on the keyboard at once and they will still be registered, with cheaper keyboards there are limits with the amount of keys that can be pressed at once, so if you're playing a game and smashing the keyboard it may be possible that some keys are not recognized if lots are pressed at the same time.

Nice example of innovation. It's a weird concept and it remains to be seen if it will become a new type of standard. I'm not putting any money down for it but anyone who does is definitely getting one powerful and interesting machine.

The Mothership isn't upgradeable (in terms of CPU/GPU) so not sure what you're referring to. I have a LOT of Clevo reviews on the channel, including 7700K, 8700K and 9900K models.

Oh I see, no of course not, even MSI have had that before, though like Clevo they rely on MXM, the Area 51M seems interesting because they are using their own proprietary graphics board which gives them some level of control, I talk more about it and the problems around it actually being upgradeable in that video though.

I built an i7 with 16 gigs of memory and a Maximus VIII at 5 years old that will eat this laptops lunch for under 800 bucks....5 grand seriously? ...Nothing beats the power of a good desktop...

Sure, but you're paying for portability here which some people require. If you don't need to move it buying a laptop is a silly choice.

Was going to build PC this february. Then opt for gaming laptop for the portability. Then all this new gaming laptop announced and got me all confused again (rtx 2060 for msi ge63 and ge75 looks great but with no release date yet. Sad)

I prefer higher refresh rates than 4k hopefully they can sneak in a 240hertz panel its gives more competitiveness for me. For sure 4k 60fps will be really great too

1080p for laptops is the sweetspot. Good dpi density for 15/17" screens, plus futureproofs expensive gaming laptops for about 3 years,remember it had a gsynch 144hz panel that would go to waste with 1440p/4k.What makes you think an RTX 2080 can handle 4k 60 fps in AAA games that launch in say 3 years? It barely gets 60 fps average on Witcher 3 at 4k, soon to be a 4 year old game.

Yeah 1440p may have been nice at 17", I guess as a "desktop replacement" though the idea is you connect better external monitors most of the time than sit on a tiny laptop screen all day.

Okay ! Asus is always been a great Gaming brand, are you sure that we will get Performance like desktop graphics ? Do you think that the port management in this Mothership is great ? What about the weight and price ? It feels great to watch your videos... You should do unboxing videos which would be pretty interesting...

Well in theory the 2080 isn't max-q so should be somewhat close to desktop level, but we don't actually know yet what the exact difference in specs is between the desktop version because Nvidia hasn't released that yet. The ports seem alright to me, decent selection, SD slot was a nice surprise. The weight is around 4.7KG, price is mentioned in the middle, around $5000 USD but again not confirmed.

The info I was given just says Q1 2019, not sure of exact date, most RTX laptops will be available from the 29th of Jan not sure if this will be then or a bit later.
