The Atlantic 75 Genesis Reissues from Analogue Productions are BIG news! I can't remember being so excited for a rock reissue in ages! There are seven titles from the Genesis catalog being done for the Atlantic 75 Genesis Reissue campaign. These are being cut from the original master tapes (original mixes) for the first time since Classic Records did thier Genesis reissues. This time they are being done at 45rpm, mastered by either Chris Bellman or Bernie Grundman, pressed on 180gm vinyl at QRP, and possibly RTI, in high gloss film laminated tip on gatefold jackets with original artwork. There is no confirmation yet on pressing quantities or if they will employ the original Charisma labels.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
A Trick Of The Tail
They are also releasing Abacab and Genesis S/T as well as two Phil Collins solo albums.

Using the original master tapes, surely these will be the best versions available since the original pressings. What a great opportunity for those that don’t have OG’s to get a brand new mint condition product with the best quality sound experience that can ever be reproduced- definitely worth the investment!

It is an overlooked gem. So cool to hear the Genesis of GENESIS! Especially a young Peter Gabriel! Some great stuff if you include the singles as this edition does!

Update: Selling England arrived at my doorstep yesterday. Just gave it a full sit-down listen. No hyperbole here, its outstanding. Very quiet vinyl, with tons of separation and depth, wonderful midrange, and nice warm lows. I own 3 different copies of this album including the Classic Records release from 20-plus years ago and this blew that away. I can't wait to hear your review Scott!

Hi Robert, Oh yes, though I did not focus on it, Steve Hackett's fabulous guitar solos spread throughout all these releases will be a treat. This one you're referring to is especially noteworthy. As good as And Then There We're Three and Duke are, the band lost an absolutely crucial component of their sound.

Chad mentioned in a video that Lamb Lies Down would be a booklet style similar to the Wonderful Sounds of QRP, but with 4 individual LP jackets instead of 3. I do not have this on vinyl and am super stoked. I was on the edge regarding Trick of the Tail, but fear you have tempted me beyond my restraints. 😂 Thanks for the video! Enjoy the Genesis everyone!

Really looking forward to these - and that's from someone who can remember, as a 14 year old, taking Foxtrot to school upon it's release and being ridiculed for liking such "weird" music. Hi Scott, many thanks for the lead into this series with Genesis. Yeah, some great memories but by now „old hats“ for me. Maybe, maybe… The Lamb… but not over 8 sides. If at all, I am more leaning to 1 or 2 Jazz titles which I do not have but skip all the rest of the 45s. Cheers!

Hi Thomas, I hope these shed a new light on what we know so well already. I have the Classics and others yet I'm still super excited to see what these sound like. I agree that Lanb on 8 sides is a bit painful but there's no way around that unfortunately. The stunning moments throughout will be demo worthy I think. "And I'm hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freewaaaaay...BAM" LOL IM EXCITED!

Hi Scott. I going to order all of the Phil Collins and Genesis albums and you already know, the jazz titles. There are some other interesting releases I may pickup. Definitely not going to do the entire series. I not going to hold my breathe for Zeppelin, but if they are released, hopefully they will release them as a regular 45 rpm releases. Cheers my friend.

Trick of the Tail at 45 is a dream come true for me-at 33.3 that’s some seriously long album sides, the wonderful dynamics of this album are going to be jaw-dropping at 45! Hoping Wind & Wuthering gets a 45 release, too-and Seconds Out, as well (one of the most sonically impressive live albums ever, my Japan pressing sounds stunning).

Atlantic are repressing at 33 1/3rpm as the 75th Anniversary series, they are also partnering some releases with VMP (Vinyl Me Please)

I'll be keeping a close eye on what happens there. I know there's a repress on clear vinyl of Led Zep 4, though it's not a new mastering, but a repress of the Jimmy Page version.

Nothing wrong with that! I love my originals and reissues on Classic. This is exciting to me because of the 45 aspect and returning to original mixes. Thankfully they seem spaced out in the release so it will be less punishing on the wallet. It's a lot of money.

I might go for the SEBTP, but my original Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme, both VG+ to NM condition are more than good enough. Also, the original UK CD of Trick of the Tail is so outstanding, I cannot imagine the 45 being an improvement that I will actually be able to hear. Also, the original CD release of Lamb is the only version I will listen to.

@@lpc1231000I can enthusiastically recommend SEBTP, as I've had it playing all week, and did a follow up shootout video on it. It's the best I heard of four pressings by quite a margin. Based on this, I won't be skipping any of these. I have a feeling these upcoming ones will surpass all previous pressings. I have heard great things about that Trick CD. I'm looking for one.

Nice overview of the Genesis titles Scott! I have Selling England by the Pound ordered since I have seen that Chad had the jacket pressed already. I will assess that title to see how good it sounds and whether I will jump at the others. I do have the 2 Phil Collins ordered as well. I do know I will want 2 of the Yes titles and probably both Stone Temple Pilots. Cheers

I think that was a smart one to press first. Great sounding record already, but it's a bit long, and will surely benefit from the 45 format. I hope it exceeds my expectations. I'm getting some of the Yes titles as well.

Remember too that there are many people who are new to the hobby, and we're not collecting when the originals were released, and missed out on the Classics and MFSL. For them, this will be especially exciting to get clean, all analogue audiophile editions of this fascinating period of Genesis.

These are the ones I am looking forward to most from the Atlantic 75 series. I have UK originals of nearly all the Genesis albums on vinyl which I have played to death. They are certainly not “audiophile” sounding but imo the box set SACDs released in 2007 & 2008 sound fantastic, with superb instrument separation. If these releases can match or beat the SACDs then they will be stunning. I generally prefer vinyl over CDs so have ordered SEBTP and if I like it will order the rest of the Gabriel era albums plus ATOTT. Like you I feel no Wind & Wuthering is a missed opportunity and I would also liked to have seen Trespass rather than the later releases as there are so many quiet passages on that album where the pops & clicks on my pressing are really annoying. Let’s hope they do these in the future. Looking forward to your shootout videos idc.

It's true at least the first two and Trespass are not 'audiophile', where the ones after can be quite good. I admit I've not heard much of the Nick Davis remixes, but the SACDs you mention - are they original mix or remix? I'll have to try one and see what the controversy is about. Some swear the original CD for Trick of the Tail sounds amazing. There is a lot riding in these new versions of the original mixes. I have confidence that the extra space will help out the longer albums. Cant wait to see and hear them!

@@ThePressingMatters The boxes I have all say “new remaster, stereo mix & surround sound mix.”I really love them but they are certainly not the same as the originals. As with everything it will depend on your system, room & what sound you like. Probably worth seeing if you can get a listen to one & see what you think, especially as the boxes have rocketed in price. Some of the DVD extras which come in the boxes are well worth a watch.

No, that’s correct. It’s a gatefold with two extra pockets. So individual pockets for each LP. Hard to explain, there was a Grateful Dead 4-LP that he showed to demonstrate.

Hi Scott this is also a very good for me to get the Genesis albums on 45 rpm , I have the lamb on Classic records but have ordered the others . Great video and we can hope for other titles . As for number of pressings chad mentioned 2000 numbered but not clear if there is a limit on numbers he can press .

Hi Tony! Thank you for your comment as I was not really clear on the whole numbering and subscription aspect. So, if 2,000 people sign up for one of the subscription plans, they will get a numbered QRP pressing? And if not some of those will be sold to preorders I assume. And then there will be unnumbered pressings from RTI or QRP. Very confusing which is why I didn't get into that part of the topic. I don't see more that 500 people forking over $4,000 for a subscription, so I think we'll see numbered pressings for early preorders, particularly on Selling England which will be here fairly soon. I personally don't care if they are numbered or not, QRP or RTI. I just want to be sure to get a copy (and maybe a back up lol)

Yes the Fly on a Windshield transition will be wonderful I have the MoFi and Japanese Trick of the Tail Highly toted but I be the 45 rpm will really shine based on the Charles Mingus ATL 75 45

Omg I can't wait for Fly On A Windshield. I'll probably blow up my system! This is so exciting. I'll be doing an evaluation of Selling England next. I've heard there are better than the MFSL of Trick, but I love it. I guess ignorance is bliss. But by the time that comes out I'll have rounded up some other contenders for a thorough comparison. Do you feel the Japanese is better than the MFSL? Also looking forward to Aja. Are you preordered on that UHQR, or going to wait for reviews?

I'm pretty stoked for 90125 and possibly Deja Vu. The 2021 release of Deja Vu on vinyl was so good I'm not sure how that could be topped though. Can anyone guess when these AP reissues are likely to come out?

I think 90125 will sound beautiful. Deja Vu, as good as the 2021 is, could use some help I think. They start rolling out next month, though the first three don't heavily interest me. Mingus Blues and Roots, Face Value and John Prine. Of course if I get to hear them I'll report on them. Thanks for watching Andrew!

They will be using the metal works from the Classic Records pressing of Deja Vu so it should sound the same as the Classic Records pressing with perhaps slightly quieter vinyl.

I am in total agreement! Great video. The early albums really excite me, especially Trick of the Tail. It’s a shame about W and W. Maybe a master tape problem. I can only do the a little at a time approach with the Lamb as well 😂. And about Zeppelin… maybe the first 5 albums on Atlantic? Physical Graffiti was on swan song. Maybe a dramatic pause for that announcement after dropping the massive 70 albums.

Regarding LZ, Page's 2014 vinyl campaign was spectacular and I own all of them, plus I have PG on Classic records but still, am I going to get them all again? Probably not, I'm sick, but not that sick.

I also own a vg+ RL Led Zeppelin II and yes it sounds better than the Page 2014 version. Its a vicious circle and one that I can't seem to escape. Maybe I have to have the new LZ's too....damn it!

I never did get any of the Page remasters, as I have the Classics but I was curious. Perhaps I should try one. People in audiophile circles tend to put them down, so I was surprised to hear you say it was a spectacular series. I've thought about trying one or two. Can you recommend one of your favorites?

Though they are 2 individual tracks in A Trick of the Tail, the transition from Entangled to Squonk is part of the listening experience. Guess they will be severed onto 2 sides on 45 rpm. (It’s almost like the Tchaikovsky violin concerto, the 2nd and 3rd movements have to be listened to continuously.)

There is no transition between those two tracks. They are separate. It's just that Squonk comes in rather quickly. Regardless, you're not missing out by having it split on two sides.

Good catch- there is a pause, but we're very used to the transition. I'm fine with it if we get increases in fidelity. I always have the 33. Is it an ideal situation? No, but this promises something better on fidelity for a slight trade off.

Some more thoughts. I only own Selling England and the Lamb from Classic Records and have been kicking myself ever since for not buying all of them. I feel like this will be a great chance to finally get high-quality vinyl pressings of my favorite band and this time I'm not hesitating. I sure wish we knew the pressing numbers! Out of the ones missing, they all could use the remastering, but number 1 on that list is Duke. Can you imagine Duke on 45rpm on two LP's? We would finally have a bottom end! Same with ATTWT! Same with Wind! Now that the Genesis Catalog has been sold, I'm sure another reputable label will pick up the mantel. I would imagine Abbey Roads would do an amazing job on the titles that Acoustic Sounds are not doing.

Hi Todd, I fortunately was in the scene when Classic released Genesis and of course I was just as excited as I am today and bought all of them. They are fantastic as you know from the two you have. I'm so thrilled we're getting Trick of the Tail, but yes it's the next three that would have the greatest benefit. All are too long for one LP. Wind and Wuthering's single jacket is actually a wrap around image. Can you imagine holding a gloss or special watercolor matte tip on gatefold of that beautiful image? Someone needs to do these three right. And Then There Were Three is also compromised by length and has a beautiful wrap around image as well. Well let's be happy for these and if the sell well someone will figure this out.

My bet is on Abbey Road Studios. What they did with Second's Out in 2019 was brilliant. I love the half-speed master cert and OBI as much as the sound. They also put out the 45 rpm Eno records that I cherish and love. @@ThePressingMatters

I have the Classic 33 releases of these and they are stellar so I'll probably skip the 45s for those. I am really interested in A Trick of the Tail, which I don't have. It would have been great to have Wind and Withering. For me, the best Genesis period was when Steve Hackett was in the band.

Absolutely, I agree - Hackett gave the band a very distinctive sound. Is was so apparent when he was gone. I have the Classics too and they are all one really needs, but I'm a bit obsessed. Definitely get Trick of the Tail and a Japanese Wind and Wuthering for now.

Didn’t Chad say in a video that they would be re-using the Classic stampers for the Genesis albums they did, and then have Chris Bellman remaster the new ones for continuity, since he did the Classic Genesis remasters originally?

Apparently Bernie is listed for Selling England and Lamb. If that's true I presume he once did 45 cuts for Classic and cChad is going to use the metal. I have no issues with that! The 33s are great!

Well, as you probably figured, I'm in for the Yes titles for sure, I don't have 45s for the Crosby Stiils and Nash titles so I will go for those. The later two I don't own at all and I've been wanting to get them for a while. As for jazz, I'll have to audition, but I don't have most of them. The engineering on Atlantic jazz that I have heard is just ok. I'll probably do a follow up on some other pics from the series!

I’m pretty unfamiliar with the Gabriel era except for Lamb and Foxtrot, neither of which I like much. I’ve never heard Trick of the Tail so I might be interested in getting the AP for that one. Didn’t see Duke in the release list either which seems weird to me. Love that one and Abacab.

I think you might like Trick of the Tail. More proggy than Abacab, but Phil is great, and there are many moments of intense beauty, without the weirdness you might hear on the Gabriel years stuff.

Hi Scott love your vids. Just a couple of q's and observations. Regarding the MFSL of Trick: I own that one too and it isn't a great version at all. For many years I did extensive shoutouts and while the MFSL is doing nice in the bass it totaly fails in the high and mid range frequencies, compared to the OG's: Dutch, UK and German pressing. But if you're really in for a treat, get the first generation CD (although the 90s remaster is good sounding). This one really sound great. I haven't came across yet a vinyl version that tops this cd version (same goes for Duke). Perhaps the Atlantic series will.... That brings me to my question: has it been confirmed that Atlantic will use the original pre Davis mixes? Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards from the Netherlands, Emile

Hi Emile! I have only ever heard the US Atco long ago and at some point replaced it with the MFSL. I'm very intrigued by your comments and I don't doubt you at all. I've of course heard that UK pressings were superior and know about the first CD as well. I probably will be able to access some of the pressings you mention by the time the 45 comes out. I'd love to discover a better sounding version and I do hope the 45 fits the bill. Yes to my knowledge they are not using the remixes. I imagine it will be from the original master or first generation copy tape of the original mix.

I too own all the Classics yet I am really hoping these will be definitive. I'll have plenty to say once they start coming out. Selling England by the Pound is first and will be in a couple of weeks! Trick of the Tail may be 3 years away unfortunately.

Chad has said that the first 2500 are numbered limited editions pressed at QRP (for the whole series) thereafter indeterminate numbers pressed at RTI he has hinted that some may be time limited?

That makes sense, maybe some of those will trickle out after the subscribers orders are fulfilled. The contract may be time rather than number limited. I don't mind having RTI presses. I see them as on par with QRP.

Im glad for Genesis fans. But I really arnt too hyped about it, mainly because they are 45s. Youre mistaken on these being recut too, since Chad is using old Classic plates from Bellman I think. Given that its not a new mastering I just dont find much reason since Genesis is sadly not the best recorded or mixed band out there and the Classic 33s already reveal a lot of the quality inconsistency. That and having to split Supper in two and Lamb being on 4 records is not something anyone is happy about I dont think.The Lamb will be a box by the way. I might have been interested in Selling England since it works well on 45 and is well recorded but again, with it just being the old mastering I dont think theres much to gain. Ill only be getting Tail as of now since its a new cut.

Hi Leon, I thought all the Classics were cut by Bernie. So Lamb and Selling England are unreleased 45 cuts from Classic. Nursery and Foxtrot are Bellman. Are they not new cuts? I wasn't aware he did them for Classic. I'll check my Classics tonight. Anyway I'm excited, and hardly anyone has heard the 45s beyond the few that have a test pressing.

@@ThePressingMatters Im pretty sure the only new cut is Tail. All the rest were by Bellman or some other engineer, not Grundman because he signed his work. Its possible the 45s sound way different, but I seriously doubt anything more than minor differences which will not be worthwhile for me. We will see and hear though.

I just checked my Classics of Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot and neither signature is in the deadwax. No indication given on Discogs either. Odd I could have sworn they were cut by Grundman. Oh well we'll hear soon enough how Selling England came out.

@@leon9021 Good to know. So Bellman cut Nursery and Foxtrot in both 33 and 45, and Grundman cut selling England and Lamb at 33 and 45, but beyond test pressings, no one has heard the 45 versions. Ok I think I got now! Even though I have the Classics, I'm very curious about these. We'll know soon enough!

As Chad Kassem owns the Classic Records masters, he often uses them. Of late, when he decides to have an album remastered, the highs are noticeably cut down. When he announced the Atlantic 75th albums, I remember him saying that the first pressings will be limited and done at QRP plus being numbered. After that QRP or RTI will do the rest. Hopefully, Chad will use the CR remasters done at Bernie Grundman mastering. As Chad has done before, if he uses the CR masters, then he will have these new re-issues done at RTI. Classic Records did both 33 13 Lp's of atleast the first four of Led Zeppelin's, I have the boxed set, plus they did multi-disc 45rpm version, sold only in a road case. With the prices of the road case set(original CR price $649 and now going 10X that), if they use the CR master disc, it will be an instant sell-out.

I have a feeling that maybe we will get unreleased 45 cuts done by Bernie for Lamb and Selling England. If the Classic 33 are any indication, the 45s should be great. Is Bernie listed for the CSN and Deja Vu titles? Maybe those too?

@@ThePressingMatters In a recent email from Acoustic Sounds, Chad states that the first 2,000 of each title will be numbered and pressed at QRP. The rest will NOT be numbered and will be pressed at either QRP or RTI. I believe that if QRP has the time to press them, they will press them there. It seems that QRP is busy re-pressing their own titles when they have the time. But it seems that QRP is keeping busy pressing records for other record labels who's LP are priced in the in the $20's range, just as RTI is doing.

I fondly remember road trips with mom and dad in the seventies and recall how much I hated hearing Pink Floyd Time on 8 track entirely because just before Dave’s glorious solo the tape would wind down and “click click” then wind back up again. It was a real buzz killer and I fear that might also be the case with SR and a 45 pressing? I hope I am wrong.

I'd think they'd have to be very particular copes for each title. The Classics and a MFSL could pay for it three times over, but a typical US Atco pressing not so much.

I didn't mean to imply the US originals are throwaways, or not good editions. They are just worth less thank uk or Classics, so in answer to your question I don't think they would fetch the $60 each required to get these.

Probably so. I don't mind them skipping that one. The absence of Wind and Wuthering is a real shame. It's beautifully recorded, and would be perfect for a 45.

Hi Scott, IMHO UK Charisma LPs of Nursery Cryme & Foxtrot sounded cr*p. I'm not sure of the reason, hopefully it's not the mix used by subsequent reissues! I avoided the original CDs & the remixed CD remasters sounded much better. Selling England By The Pound Charisma first pressing sounded good, the CD remaster did not, so I reverted to my original CD & gave the remaster away. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Charisma first pressing had 50Hz hum baked in, the original CD removed the hum & I have never felt the need to replace it. Later albums have superb engineering, so it then comes down to personal preferences. Enjoy!!

Hi Trevor, There's certainly room for improvement for the earlier albums. I hope the tapes are in good shape for those. I'm confident Selling England, Lamb and Truck will be exemplary. On the Nick Davis remixes, I've only heard one - I was just reporting on the general user reviews of them. Some things were changed as is usual for a remix, and the CDs are said to be loud and lacking dynamic range. Was that the case with the remixes you've heard? Some say the vinyl of the remixes come across better than the CD.

I would check reviews of these new Nursery Cryme & Foxtrot LPs before purchasing. Those albums were in desperate need of a remix but all the others not really. If Selling England By The Pound is any indication, I'd be extremely cautious purchasing any of the later remixed albums in any format. Caveat Emptor!

Remixing is not necessarily a bad move. One of the greatest examples of the benefit of remixing is the Terry Reid Super Lungs 2CD set. CD1 contains original albums, CD2 contains outtakes newly mixed (not remixed), the difference in audio quality is stunning. Obviously the tape recorders used were fine but some of the early multi-track mixing desks were abysmal, go figure!!

I think the main problem with the UK originals was that they were all very long albums so really suffered from inner groove distortion, especially the closing section of Suppers Ready. That’s why I think the 45rpm format will really bring them to life. I’m all in 😊
