People wouldn't care so much about skins if you didn't have fomo battle passes to get them, and if skins weren't like $10-20 for basically one skin or gun model. I know people argue that games take a lot of money to develop and I always say if I'm paying $70 for a game that has 80 in game skins and 20 guns at launch then how do you justify that for the dev time to make 1 skin is = 1/3 of the whole game. If skins were $2 and were always available nobody would care. I swear Ubisoft is it's own worst enemy sometime. When I was part of Siege dev team, the studio direction forced us to follow bad business plans like porting the game to Stadia and Luna for example. Which was a huge waste of time and money that was not put in the game's health and content. At times it felt like the game's leadership team had to fight against the studio head to protect the best interests of that game that we love. Gaming news is rife with stories about how bad developers are getting treated by their corporate overlords, so thinking that any of this money is going to hardworking people is quite frankly naive. The money from this membership is going to investors, the REAL customer. You and I are just the cows getting milked, getting less and less product and value for our money. They are testing the waters, and right now, you are the frog in the boiling water. Do not believe these companies are your friend or even a friend of the developers. so whats interesting about r6s battlepass is that it isnt like a linear 100 levels, its a little bit of a board game where you can sorta plan a route through it, picking up items you want and foregoing items you dont. simultaneously the main way to progress through it is to do challenges, which is time gated, every few weeks they'll unlock a new set of challenges you can do, and it usually involves playing certain characters, playstyles or using certain guns or gadgets. this means that, if you buy the battlepass, you will feel like you're retroactively wasting the money you invested in it by not playing in a lot of different types of ways that you wont like playing. no matter what kind of R6 player you are, some of these challenges will be involve playing the game in a way you hate, and if you dont then you're losing out on rewards that you paid to grind for, and even if you get the pass, and grind your way to the bits you DO want, what about all the other bits? its not a linear pass so theres no capstone that you normally really want, you'll have gotten the things you want and then theres all the other shit, dont you want that? are you just going to ignore the popups and notification icons for all these EXCITING CHALLENGES to grind shit you dont even want? well yes, you are, or at least you should, but it makes the whole experience of booting up the game and doing a few rounds much less enjoyable.

Here's the thing: All of the problems that live-service games try to solve with more monetization are problems that they made themselves. If a good game has both single and multi-player modes, and people enjoy both, they will play it for years even without major content patches. Just look at the older Halo games, or even Mario Kart Wii. In those cases, people even set up private servers to keep it running after their parent companies couldn't be bothered anymore.

unless you are on PC then you really aint missing out, consoles are dying, used to be you got a console when you were broke and/or didnt know how to build a gaming PC and/or wanted it to just work the moment you plugged it in, nowadays for barely more than the cost of a console you can get an entry level prebuilt PC (or a midrange if you can build it yourself), setting up a PC is not much harder than a console, I really dont get why people are so obsessed with consoles, PC is objectively as good or better in just about every way.

This situation really reminds me of Tanki Online. It was basically the same, beloved game of the early 2010s, grew to have cool updates, but then the devs started way too delusional, adding cringe "exclusive" animated whatever skins, "rare" mega-expensive cosmetics and modifications, a Battle Pass and even a Premium account service. After all of these occured, the game quickly died out, and from an average of 80.000 players active, last time I checked there were maybe 200-1000. They did everything they could wrong with the game, and even though it never was as big as Siege really, it still had quite the downfall.

No the problem with SBMM is that every single game I play is a sweat fest especially in cod which is why I quit playing after Cold War because the matchmaking was so extremely strict. I’ve been playing a ton of XDefiant and that game is amazing and has ZERO SBMM which is great bc some games I go off, some games I get stomped, and others are super close. SBMM only serves to aid people who don’t even play video games or are shit bc they’re mechanically illiterate. The only people who cry about getting crapped on in games and whine about needed SBMM are people who think they’re way better than they are and then they meet someone who ACTUALLY plays games and they get scrub checked 😂 get good

I’m a .9-1 kd fps player, I dont care who I play against. I dont want to feel like I’m playing ranked mode every time I get off work. In Xdefiant if I get a lobby that I do well in I don’t have a worry of my next 4-5 games being a slog of CDL skins and RU-vid guide meta weapons. I generally don’t mind playing sweaty, I even enjoy those super tight lobbies from time to time. But it’s exhausting when every match feels the exact same. I also love the hell out of Titanfall 2 and wish more “movement” oriented shooters would copy some of those systems instead of trying to be MW2019
@cimerea
@cimerea 3 дня назад
I understand your concerns. Let me just give you a more tangible example of what I'm trying to say. There were many reasons, why Titanfall 2 died but one of the more pronounced was the lack of SBMM. No new player stayed for long, cause while he was trying to figure out, what bunny hopping was, he got shot in the face with no scope kraber by a gen 100 player flying by, who got there from his side of the map in 2.46 sec. And with lack of players it only got worse and worse untill the multi was dead. So yeah, while I do understand SBMM has downsides, it is, at least in my opinion, better than the alternative. Plus all the devs have to do is widening the skill range for matchmaking to make it less of a sweatfest. Or add game modes, where sbmm is irrelevant and hence not needed.

Here's the thing that came to mind when you mentioned subscriptions like Genshin Impact. I play both Genshin and Honkai: Star rail fairly regularly, but I only ever have one of their subscriptions, in Genshin's case, the Welkin Moon, and in Star Rail's Case, the Express storage cache thing (I can never remember what it is called exactly, but they're literally the same things for two different in game currencies. Hell, even the conversions to pulls on the banners are the same.) The key difference though is that both of those together are $10. Total. And like I said, I only ever have one on at a time. All I could find on any Ubisoft subscriptions that are similar put them into the $18-$20 price range, EACH. Same thing applies to RU-vid Premium, as even though that's not the topic of discussion here, it's still relevant. Honestly if companies like Ubi, RU-vid, etc. would take a page out of Hoyoverse's playbook and lower their prices down to something reasonable, I might be inclined to get it. And their games too. Genshin has survived for over... what, 3 years? 4? I've frankly lost track at this point, but the point is that it's proof that a free game with a cheap subscription bonus that's totally optional can be INSANELY profitable in the long run. Sure, the rest of it's shop isn't the cheapest ever, but again, it's all optional, and I think that's the major takeaway.

5:21 A good example of good monetization has to be Deep Rock Galactic. It's not so much of a live service game, but the devs had been pushing out free major updates for years after release along with other customer friendly features and practices which you get access to for the same 20 dollars you bought the game for. They monetize their game by releasing cosmetics DLCs, which devoted fans with spare cash are happy to buy more so to support Ghost Ship games than to get the cosmetics in those packs. Rock and Stone
