Thank you for visiting us at the Auto Shop of the Future. We give tours daily, and people love going back in time seeing 50 Roadsters under roof, reminiscent of early Tesla before the other models.
27:56 correction - Gruber meant "a mile or so under 40mph" not 30. You could drive the early Prius up to 39mph before the gas engine would kick on. Also interesting they alluded to the previous building fire but no details were given. It was a pretty big story at the time (2021). They lost over 30 Roadsters in the fire. Many of them were customer cars in for repairs. And apparently I forgot they had a previous fire in 2017 where they lost 5 Roadsters and an AC Propulsion tzero (ouch!).
(yes I'm responding to myself) actually the Prius is pretty peppy compared to earlier gas cars. My 2015 Prius could hit 60mph in about 10 seconds. People in the 1970s loved the VW Beetle, and its 0-60 time is closer to 20 seconds. And yes, the Prius was the gateway drug to going full-electric. The point when a light would go green and the Prius would take off on full electricity until the gas engine kicked in made it obvious I needed a car that could do that all the time.
The first fire was May 5th 2017, the result of overcharging a 1000lb Tesla Roadster Pack. We learned a lot, and lost 11 cars, 6 of which were our Roadsters, a MS (ours) an EV Smart car (ours), the 1 of 3 Tzero, a 2008 ACR Viper, and one employees car which we promptly replaced. The second fire in October of 2021 was attributed to cause unknown, with lots of investigative effort focused on the electrical wiring. This time we lost 9 of our own Roadsters, and a MS, with the rest being customer Roadsters, the worst tragedy in Roadster history. Thank you for the Prius clarification. Few things in life create a paradigm shift, but driving electric, even for slow and short distances was one of those.
You're very sexy! Loved that video and this is one of the videos that definitely refutes the old barstool nonsense of "electric cars will last 10 years max before you have to throw them on the garbage!" How long do you think regular cars would last without enthusiasts supporting them long after the manufacturer washed their hands off them? And the same goes for EVs, there already are garages that keep old EVs going, revive battery packs, repair and upgrade components and restore and customize vehicles. Your very channel is proof of that. Welcome to the future, soon the haters will just be quare auld fellas telling everyone "those electric cars are garbage, you'll see, soon they'll all break and we can go back to V8 again!". "Ok Grampa, you've had enough, you're always like that after one too many sherries, let's get you back to your bed, you can watch some reruns of Dukes of Hazzard on your VHS ". 😂🖖😜
idk i think the volt's battery was over engineered, maybe not the most fair compairson. the first gens last 500k miles +. the leaf though is fair game. the bolt also was the one with the recall
11:54 No. At 0 rpm it puts out 0HP. Lots of Torque, but no Power. Power (Rotational) = Force (Torque) X Speed (Rpm) If speed is 0 then power is 0. If the motor has constant torque, then it doesn't reach max power until it reaches the max rpm. This guy should know what he's talking about, but also forgets the all important h when talking about battery capacity. It's no wonder so many people find EVs confusing when even experts can't get their facts straight. Still a very interesting video though. Thanks!
