@@hammerpocket oh I didn't know that. Hadn't heard anything from him in years. I remember he had a song back in the 90's. You Better Work I think it was called.
"Tiiiiiiiiin roof.......rusted!" Great seeing you enjoying it! When this came out, I don't care where it played...in the living room, in the car, at the bar...it was a PARTY! They were sort of an underground New Wave band from the late 70s all the way through the 80s. Anyone who liked quirky, absurd, in your face music had a crush on them but they remained commercially obscure. Cosmic Thing which is the album this was on was their mainstream breakthrough.
@@turdferguson400 I don't remember where I heard it, I just remember hearing it somewhere. I think it might have been on a talk show or something where they were discussing this song.
@@turdferguson400 I got it from context. The way he says, "YOU'RE WHAT?!!?" I never confirmed, but I figured it was a euphemism for a broken condom. Could be wrong, though.
The bass player is Sara Lee, a member of Gang of Four, who also played with Ani DiFranco, Robert Fripp, Robyn Hitchcock, Kristen Hall, and Indigo Girls, among others.
Yes, she replaced founding member Ricky Wilson & brother of Cindy (the blonde singer) , when he passed away in 1985. I don't know if people got the message of her being in the bathtub scene. We used to say "Baby, you so fine, I'd drink your bathwater!" In the scene you can see someone ladling her bathwater into a Martini glass. I always loved that saying & the video's reference to it. Personally, I've never done it cause while it sounds interesting "ON PAPER" in real life that would be gross AF, mostly cause drinking soapy water is foul. LOL!! 😆😆
This iS A fUN SONG IN 2020....iT IS played a lot in Dance Bars EVERYWHERE!!! People Love the B 52's because the capture the fun times and dance of the early 1960's
The band is the B-52s like the airplane, the bomber a B-52. Everybody will have their favorite B-52s songs. You can't go wrong with Roam, Planet Clair, or (My own) Private Idaho.
I used to sing planet clair in school back in the early 80's and nobody had ever heard of it or the B-52's. Guess i and the B-52's were still a bit ahead of our time back then.
Although a B-52 (B fifty-two) is a bomber plane, it was also the nickname for an early 1960s women's hairdo that was shaped like the nosecone of a B-52 (similar to a beehive hairstyle but with a more tapered shape). The women in the group wore a lot of retro hair, makeup, and clothing, and they did that hairstyle with some frequency. "Love Shack" was one of the biggest hits of 1989-90, and the whole album was a major seller, too. You couldn't get away from it, even if you wanted to (which I didn't). That season, the B-52s appeared on Saturday Night Live and did a major concert in NY's Central Park. I happened to know a guy in NYC who knew the group, so got invited to a birthday party that was thrown that weekend for the lead singer, Kate Pierson. Although I got introduced and shook hands with her, she was clearly glazed over with having everybody wanting to meet her and such, so I didn't talk to her at all. I did get to chat with the keyboard player (seen in the video) and his wife for a few minutes. They were super-nice, just regular people. I always get a kick out of seeing this video and listening to the songs from that album, it brings back great memories of fun times.
I' m waiting for a genius that is going to say that they were underrated.... 🤦♂️all the bands back then had their fans, and, most important... they stud the test of the time💓💪
Love Shack is from the #1 album by the B-52's called Cosmic Thing. It spawned four #1 hits. They are Love Shack, Topaz, Roam and Follow Your Bliss (the only instrumental on the album). The whole album is stellar! Pun intended.
The band takes its name from a variation of the beehive hairstyle that they'd wear, that takes name from Boeing's B-52 (fifty-two) bomber planes of the 1950s and 1960s. The particular 'do resembles the nose cone of the plane. "Tin roof... rusted" doesn't mean anything. It's like when Queen sang "fried chicken" at the end of "One Vision". And yes, this is one of the funnest songs out there.
It was a pleasant surprise for us 80s kids, that they could produce such a fun and energetic number 20 years after their heyday. You must listen to "Rock Lobster" and "Planet Claire", the B-52s' biggest hits.
The Chrysler reference made me laugh. When I was a kid our parents used to give us the most gigantic sturdy (safe) old cars they could find for our first cars. We could pile about 12 of us into my friend's old T-Bird.
My first car was an auctioned off ex police car, back when they used the old Caprice boats. My parents figured it would be safer in a crash, but totally forgot that it was once a chase vehicle with a v-10 engine and they were handing the keys to a dumb teenager haha I didn't break too many speed limits, but I did used to pile friends in the backseat and laugh at them when they couldn't open the back doors.
@@amythechocoholic5761 OMG, that is hilarious! I remember those Caprice's, they would cruise and "float" down the road like a sofa! Fun times and thanks for sharing that story! 🤣👍💯🚓
@@amythechocoholic5761 Haha! Yeah, we used to call them "boats." My first car was as old as me - a 1963 Chevy Biscayne - baby blue, lol. I loved that car and named it "Mabel." I could hardly see over the steering wheel.
Ultimate party song! The redhead Kate Pierson was friends with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and they collaborated on some songs, notably R.E.M.'s Shiny Happy People, if you want to check out another happy feelgood song that you won't be able to get out of your head.
There's nothing shameful about digging the classics. This is truly a classic song. An evergreen, if you will. As fresh today as it was when it was released, over 30 years ago.
If you ever went to a wedding reception, or school disco in England in the past 30 years you will have heard this song.... And it ALWAYS kills! Feel good classic, a guilty pleasure
That's a myth. Some people interpreted it that way and the rumor quickly spread that that was what it meant. But the band explained in an interview that it was just a completely random thing and had no hidden meaning.
Thanks. I've never been able to make that out. I thought she was possibly saying "Tanned and rested." Which for some reason remember being said about President Nixon at one time.
Loved your reaction! I grew up with this song as an 80's teenager. Nice to see the younger generation finds it just as much fun! Oh, the part you didn't understand..she's saying, "tin roof, rusted". Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your channel. You have such a happy, fun vibe!
They were a fun band. I saw them 3 times in concert. I won't say the most talented band I've ever seen but definitely the most fun I've ever had at a concert. You need to do more Billy Joel. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant or Angry Young Man (crazy piano in this one.)
All their songs are fun. They are an amazing group with their own sound that is immediately recognizable. YOU MUST LISTEN to "Rock Lobster" and "Private Idaho"!!! and 52 Girls!
This is a fun song to dance to.. One of my favorite club songs when 6 of us Moms had a Ladies weekend without Husbands and Children.... Back in the mid 80's... Thank you. Wonderful Memories..
Love Shack is a fun song. You can picture this playing at a party in the 80s and everyone screaming the lyrics, especially "Tin roof, rusted!" at the end.
Great reaction. I was in college when this song came out. An instant classic. You knew the moment you heard it you'd be playing it for the rest of your life!
I was at an outside bar near Branson, MO on Table Rock Lake. They had a live band and there were a few people dancing. When they played this everyone got up to dance!
Love them.. I remember back in the 80s working in a bank as a teen in the West Village, NYC and Freddie Schneider the lead singer coming in... I was beside myself when he gave me an autograph saying hey Bel be bad... love Freddie S the Third.. a great memory and a sweetheart of a guy!!!💖💖💖
We used dance our heads off to The B52'S in the clubs. "Cosmic Thing" was their first commercial success and put them on the map. Unfortunately, after this album was made, Ricky Wilson, the young guy with guitar, passed away and sent the group into a tailspin. Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and Ricky's sister, Cindy Wilson, the blond singer, still occasionally perform. You need to check out their earlier music.
This is one of my favorite all time songs.... such a fun song!! Love Shack!!!! Fun!!! That part you didn't get: Your what? Tin roof, rusted! They are B Fifty Twos.
Everybody liked the B-52s. All their songs brought the party to life and all on the dancefloor. Their first big hit was "Rock Lobster". That will blow you away.
The B-52s ( Fifty Twos like the bomber ) wore a very fun group. I enjoyed listening to them on the radio and even have a couple of albums (vinyl). If you thought that was fun check out "Rock Lobster". It's as crazy as it sounds and definitely one of my favorites. They experimented a lot with beat changes, off timing and sound effect both instrumental and vocal.
For the past 20 years if I am out somewhere and the DJ is taking requests you can 100% guarantee I will ask them to play this song. It always puts me in the party mood and gets some asses on the dance floor! I was one of your subbies who requested this song, so thank you for the reaction video. Rock Lobster is another great one by the B-52s. Such a weird, fun band.
Love the B-52s They are such a fun group and also this is my 10 year old granddaughters favorite song,so I listen to it a lot but so glad she loves an 80s classic!
My first concert... I was about 17. Had the BEST TIME EVER! Nobody fighting or fussing, everyone getting along and dancing, having the time of their lives.
Back in the 80's, whenever you were in a club and this song and/or Rock Lobster started playing you just got on that crowded dance floor and moved. Especially when Rock Lobster came on. There was a special way to dance to that.
This was the song to get my big brother on the dance floor....great memories with this song.....Rest In Peace Danny...what I wouldn’t give to dance one more time with ya....❤️
i was a young teen when i first heard this song. a stunning german hippy back packer was staying at our place. on this morning the news told us the berlin wall was being demolished. she was so emotional and desperately wanted to be home to celebrate, but she was with us in australia. we changed the channel to the weekend morning music program and this song started, we all danced with her in excitement of her returning to a whole new germany when she went home. this song is my favorite celebration song
'Give Me Back My Man' was on the radio back in like 1980. Remarkable lyrics and production and what is that instrument that sounds like pool balls? 'Roam' was pretty popular too.
Hell yeah, B-52's! Never was, nor will be a better party band! They came out of the Athens, GA music scene in the late 70's, but this album is their first big mainstream hit. There was a fifth member, Ricky Wilson (brother of the blond woman in red in the video, Cindy), who was the original guitar player and who died of AIDS in 1985. Kieth Strickland, who you see playing guitar in the video was originally the drummer, and Ricky's best friend from childhood. The band members were grief stricken after Ricky's death and went on hiatus until 1989 when they came back with this very autobiographical album. "Deadbeat Club" tells their story the best and was another hit off this album, along with "Roam". Earlier hits when Ricky was still alive included "Rock Lobster" (another party waiting to happen, but much more simple and raw than this), "Song for a Future Generation" (also a fun video), and "Planet Claire" and "Private Idaho". There's a good documentary on the Athens, GA music scene from that late 70's to mid-80's time period that's worth a watch, called 'Athens, GA: Inside/Out'. The B-52's only appear in it a little, but R.E.M. make several appearances. Thanks! Look forward to more B-52's! Peace from SF
And after you have heard a good amount of the B-52's, you have to listen to DEVO....you'll freak! Listen to "Whip It", "i Can't Get No Satisfaction" "Girl U Want", "Freedom of Choice"
Ty! So glad you took this one on. It is one of my favorite bands of the 80s as they were so fun and we danced like crazy at the clubs when they played especially Rock Lobster. It was fun, funny and kitschy loved them and miss their energy!
