Don't try to figure out the B-52s. Their songs are about style and the feel and it works really well for the kookiness of a good party. That's what they are mostly about -- just a good time.

Why the hell does everyone act like the b52s are some dumbed down “party band” they really aren’t. You can dance to them like practically any other form of music yes, but they had a punk kind of thing going on especially with Fred’s style of vocals, and the lyrics on most of these songs are really vivid and creative, a lot of their lyrics remind me of talking heads a bit, another popular band with hits you can dance to at parties, but just like the B52s they have amazing albums

Its about fun and having a imagination! Im 47 and grew up on the B-52s your exactly there isnt nothing to figure out they are fun songs! Almost Techno! No political statement or talking about other race, creed or religion in B-52s just using your imagination and having fun! Its for everyone! Before I get corrected they might have some political songs or something but im not 100% on that!

The B-52s were totally right for their time. They came out with Rock Lobster around the time when Punk Rock was big and ushered in a whole New Wave sound. I remember hearing them on progressive rock college radio stations during the early 80s. It didn't take long for this group to go mainstream.

They could be considered part of the late 70s post-punk movement (which was basically everything that didn't fit into the mainstream pop, rock, country, or r&b released after punk music hit it's peak in the mid 70s). "Progressive Rock" wasn't a term that was used until about the 90s (and in actual use, it was more to define rock music that would have been alternative in the 80s, but became more accepted and mainstream in the 90s). The B52s, They Might Be Giants, Violent Femmes, and R.E.M. wrre some of the bands that could be considered the founding members of the whole "college radio" scene, as it wasn't really considered a separate thing until these bands came on the scene and became popular at colleges across the U.S.A. in the early 80s.

Just seeing that you were reacting to this song brought a smile to my face! Glad you found a live performance to watch. The guitar player and the girl in the pink dress are brother and sister. After Ricky's tragic death, Keith switched from drums to guitar. The B-52's got their name from the beehive wigs the girls used to wear. They were the quintessential party band from Athens, GA. A great book about the Athens music scene is Party Out of Bounds.

I left that show never doubting them again.

This seems to be a real live performance which is strange as official videos usually have the studio version of a song. However, it is remarkably close to the studio version except the mix is off and the volume of Fred Schneider's lead vocals are too low and are difficult to understand. I prefer the studio version but this is a great performance.

The Bs got their start in the late 70s into the 80s into the start of the 90s. This is a great video of the raw baby B-52s. You bet your bottom that this song was played at EVERY party for..gosh, years. In fact, you will probably still hear the studio version at a pool party somewhere. It is iconic. I love this live version tho because it shows what a tight ensemble they were even from their early punk influenced, quirky days. I had the pleasure of seeing them live several times as they matured as a band and got even better and let me tell you, it was always an experience. I big ol' backyard party out of bounds experience! The girls have some of the most amazing voices and harmonies around. They are powerful vocalists and between the 2 of them they can make any kind of sound effect. If you want to see something from their more mainstream days that showcases the girl's voices try Roam or Channel Z or Deadbeat Club. I just really dig old, quirky Bs too. So much fun. Legal Tender, Party Out of Bounds, Dance This Mess Around, Private Idaho. I could really go on and on. If you really want to be impressed by another crazy live performance, go check out Big Bird live in Germany. Super talented bunch of creative people.

They all lived in Athens, GA together and perfected this “thrift store chic” aesthetic which was popular with punk and new wave folks in the late 70’s early 80’s. The name B-52's comes from a particular beehive hairdo resembling the nose cone of the aircraft, which Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson wore in performances throughout the band's first decade. They were pulled heavily from beach music and 50’s rock-n-roll. The girls harmonies are legendary.

1978. Rocking through the 70's with all the long guitar solos of the 70's, this was a whole new angle. Just fun.

I always get this song confused with Let's Do the Time Warp Again from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This would have great in that! Lol

I've seen them 4 times live when I was in college. Me and my friends would come to Kansas City to see them perform. At one time, they were ready to come out to perform (small outdoor arena), but it started to rain. One of the band members told us to "stay cool" and they handed out plastic sheets and showed Bugs Bunny cartoons until the rain stopped. Then they started the show!! They are so fun live!!!!!

The original lineup for the band was Fred Schneider, vocals, Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson, Ricky Wilson on guitar, and Keith Strickland on drums. Ricky passed away from AIDS in the 1980's, and Keith became the guitarist.

I remember in university, when this song would come on, the place would go NUTS!! Everyone was up dancing wildly and having a blast! And then down, down, down people would get low or even squirm around on the ground = then blast up and go crazy again... It's actually a brilliant song but you have to picture back in the day, what it was like!

My favorite song to dance to at school dances. They were so fun and unique when they came out. First time I remember hearing screams in a song. Forty years later still one my favorite groups.

I became a fan of the B-52's when I was in high school 40 years ago. They are the ultimate party band! "Private Idaho" is my favorite song of theirs. Also "Pump" from their last album, "Funplex".

This is such a fun song to dance to at the clubs in the 80’s - that down part everyone would go all the way down to floor and then jump up! Fun memories 😊

I LOVE the fact that their's a star trek sci fi rock epic about a rock lobster. Love the way their guitarist only used 4strings on his guitar.

This was a big crowd pleaser on alternative nights at the clubs. A friend of mine used to tell the tale about the night he wore his brand new white Armani sportscoat out, strutting his stuff on the dancefloor to Rock Lobster. When they got to the down down down part, he dropped to the floor with everyone else, rolling around acting crazy. Down on the dirty bar dancefloor, and ruined his new jacket, the dirt and stains never came out. He wore the jacket the rest of the evening as a badge of courage. And we never let him forget about it either!
