Look up the 5/4 trick by Harry Connick Jr. He's playing 4/4 but everyone is clapping on 1 and 3, so he plays 1 bar of 5/4 and the clapping shifts to 2 and 4. Cool stuff.

The term "Backbeat" has been around since Chuck Berry wrote the song "Rock and Roll Music" in May 1957. In the song he sings "it's got a backbeat you can't loose it". The Beatles and The Beach Boys also covered the song in the 60's and had hits with it. So, the term has been around long before the seventies.

Moving the 2 back to the “and” but keeping the 4 in place sounds like Chad Smith from RHCP. On Souk To Squeeze he moves the first and second measure 2’s back to their respective “and” while keeping the 4 in place but then goes straight 2 and 4 on the third and fourth measures. That’s one line that has eluded me. It’s nice to see it up on the board so I can math it in my head. Thanks Brandon!

Get a pair of drumsticks and a practice pad! You can buy both for less than $50 and could even use something like a mousepad on a book. That way, you can start learning a few beats without making any big commitments. And, hey, if it turns out you're up for the journey, it'd be awesome to see other lady drummers out there....sometimes it feels like I'm the only one!!

@@ana291crisDrumming is wonderful if you want a job in the performing arts. I don't know what your hopes and dreams are (and you certainly don't need to rush into any!), but mine was always to be on-stage, and drumming is a better way to achieve that than acting, juggling, magic, or wire-walking (all of which I've done). It turns out that every band needs a drummer, and every event needs a band, so you can make a part-time job out of it reasonably quickly. But you do you. If that's drumming, welcome to the team! If that's something else, I hope it brings you all the joy

@rkomada88

It comes from the "tap-roll-tap-roll-tap" pattern found in marches that snare drummers play. The march was Americas first pop music craze beginning around 1850, through the civil war era and up to the early teens (1915). The first commercially produced jazz record (1917) has a bit of a March feel to it. The roll itself is usually a five stroke roll, a basic rudiment.

Great video. Growing up in the middle of nowhere, long before the internet flooded us with an endless stream of free teaching material, I mostly had to teach drumming to myself. A lot of the time I'd spend hours just experimenting with moving stuff around a little and figure out what sounded good (you don't even have to be on a drumset necessarily). And while I wish I had only 10% of the material every aspiring drummer has on their finger tips these days, I think this freeform experimenting approach is still something younglings should do occasionally. It's amazing how deeply you can learn when you accidentally land dead-center in groove town on your own, without imitating what someone else does.

*Instead of moving the backbeat ahead or behind by an even 16th note..., try just lagging the snare hits by a few milliseconds, while keeping the kick and hat dead on the beat... That's one of the secrets to getting that epic Bonhamesque heaviness..., while adding just a touch of swing, but still keeping it more straight than swing... You can then 'tighten' or 'loosen' the groove by adjusting the lag on the snare, more lag for more looseness, and vice/versa... The trick is just keeping that lag even...*
