@@lmm Pity you cant get out to the Nevada Northern and run one of their locomotives. Only locomotive I have ever had a chance to ride on the footplate is the little Vulcan industrial at the Agrirama vintage village years ago when dad was still on the board, he was one of the ones involved in getting the locomotive for the museum in the first place. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EgLRSkRioRA.html this is the locomotive here if you are interested, little narrow gauge industrial steam engine.

I live in Gosport, and my Grampa’s best mate used to work at the mod yard where this worked. I showed him, and he remembered getting rides on the footplate

@@lmm you'll get Jupiter running. One fix at a time. Remember conservation of missery though, something will always be broken. So if it's small and unimportant, leave it broken. The moment you fix it something important breaks :D

Lovely little shunter. Although I think Richard Hammond tested the ultimate shunting loco on his new BIG series on Discovery channel. He had a play with a large german shunter with remote control fitted.

There's a mining railroad out in the western United States that I recall utilized fully automated electric locomotives to run the line. I think they were controlled by a computer that radio controlled all the trains but I forget, been a while since I last read up on the system

My Father and myself both did our apprenticeships at Baguley-Drewry in Burton on Trent. I started in 1979 so just missed this loco.

Lovely to hear of Milford connection on this one - Mum worked on Gosport and then for Milford Port Authority, and I (briefly) lived in MOD houses above Blackbridge site. Another great vid, Thank You. All the best - Kes, from Talyllyn Railway.

This loco does sound lovely, but in my opinion the old thumper DEMUs (Class 205s and the like) sound just fantastic. I'd love to see you have a go in one of those.

Loved that Lawrie, D/H are a lot smoother over D/M's (not the boots hehe) I drove the Ruston 165 at Bressingham a few years ago very impressed, far better than my old railways class 03's (CVR). watched the loft invasion first look forward to what else you find!

What a brilliant little shunter! I must admit that the Baguley-Drewry is a breed of locomotive that I've never been overly familiar with, so I found this fascinating to see, thank you. Loved that little dog as well. :)

Very enjoyable video. I treated myself to a "Driver for a Fiver" run at the open day in August 2018, and I do believe that was the loco- very smooth ride.. Not a long line, but it was a lovely day out there with such a welcoming team of members and a good display of vintage vehicles.

A possible reason for having such a light colour inside the engine bay is to allow better visibility. It shows up dirt easier, but any light is reflected better and makes it easier to see when repairing/carrying out any maintenance

There's a pair of Baguley-Drewry shunters (Nos. 3650 and 3652) preserved on the Goldfields Railway in Waihi, New Zealand. They look a little bit like the one in this video, albeit with disproportionately large cabs.

That one worked at RNAD Priddys Hard and then RNAD Frater. I remember seeing those running back and forth over the railway bridge not far from my house pulling Navy blue and sometimes military green box cars up to Fareham to become part of consists going further up the country, across to Plymouth and, often, across to the dockyard in Portsmouth, back when the military still used rail extensively for transport purposes and all the services had their vehicles and equipment painted differently to mark which service it belonged to... The reason for the speedo reading in forward and reverse is that, in busy times, such as in times of war, they didn't want to have to take the time to turn the engine around to move wagons around, so the engine may complete a run up to the main line rail at Fareham, drop the load and then return in reverse instead of having to go through the points to turn around, which also helped avoid disruption to passenger services running through. With the speedo running in both directions, the driver would be able to avoid breaking line speed limits on the return journey... The Perkins V8 power is no surprise, a lot of military vehicles and equipment ran those engines during its production, so having a lot of stuff running the same power units gives a big economy of scale in terms of buying maintenance parts. The MoD even had those engines in their first-gen Ford Cargo tractor units for a long time, which were very impressive as they would actually accelerate up the long hill out of Portsmouth on the M27 when just about all the other commercial traffic around at that time would only just about maintain speed, or often lose speed dramatically going up there...

Nice bit of history there! With the speedo, I meant the fact that it's doubled is not needed, one gauge that works for forward and backwards is quite sufficient, as a Shunter it would almost never have been turned. Makes sense to have the standard engine in it then

@@lmm I suspect the reason why they used one gauge with the doubled gauge face was to keep the equipment installation as simple as possible, something that is common across the range of military vehicles. Having one gauge for forward speed and one for reverse would add complication, and having a gauge that would read in one direction whichever direction the engine was moving would require much more complexity in the installation as the speed output from the gearbox would be turning in different directions in forward and reverse, so it would require some form of device to transform that into the direction the speedo registers in, hence why mechanical road vehicle speedos don't register anything in reverse. Speeding on that line, particularly when moving munitions, was pretty much a hanging offence, it could lead to summary dismissal of the driver, so having the speed readout was absolutely necessary...

Ahhh i know this engine. It worked in Frater, which is a munitions base. And like lawrie said it moved stuff from the mainline into the base and it would take it into Priddy's hard also. Then it would run the munitions wagons to the quay side and the barges. From there the barge meets the warship in the middle of Portsmouth harbour for loading.

Did my apprenticeship at HMS Sultan (Gosport). I walked the trackbed of the MoD branch once, the track was still there but you wouldn't want to run anything on it.

I originally come from gosport, born in the 90's and I think I know the place your on about , i now live in midlands hahaha I'm just wandering if my dad would remember the loco as he joined the navy just before 1980 and his base was Portsmouth so theres a chance he may of seen it on a visit to installations in gosport. Keep it up looking forward to next video.

Very nice little loco and very nice video! By the way Lawrie, Hornby recently released a OO gauge/1:76 scale model of a Ruston 48DS (identical apart from colour to your full size one), I thought you might be interested!

While I can't say that I like the "Dr. Seuss" paint job, it certainly seems like a wonderful little locomotive :) Very smooth and controllable, and not stressful to drive. It has definitely inspired me (along with your video on the little Schoma :) ) to go diesel/hydraulic if I build my own narrow gauge loco.

It is the colours of the company who originally built the line there, so they're trying to tie it in with that. Personally I liked it more in green. It looked super. Hydraulic drive can complicated, but it's super controllable.

What a strange little locomotive! I thought it was narrow gauge from the Instagram pics. Compared to the Ruston, this does seem pretty modern with that sliding door and clean lines. The color scheme fits the, er, 70s aesthetic, I'd say, though I agree that wasp stripes would make it look very nice. I guess it's kind of going for the very-small BR class 52 Western look? It is also incredibly cute, I may end up drawing this one too at some point-

It's very unusual. Talking to the volunteers since, it transpires that it's meant to be lined out. It's basically unfinished. I still liked it more in green. I mean they're hydraulic too! 😂 It is very attractive. I'm a big fan!

@@lmm Yeah I don't suppose they'd be wanting to pop back to fill it up every day, not a 5 minute job. It always amazes me how little physical power those locos have, surely it must all be down to the gearing that makes them able to do what they do......like power the wipers 🤣

If you like the Perkins, you really need to drive a truck or something else with a Mercedes-Benz OM421. It has a really strong signature sound that's just plain awesome. It sounds just like it wants to pull - really one of the greatest and a nearly indestructible beast!

@@lmm I just googled a bit and couldn't really find anything in the UK - but I'm not from there so I don't really know where to look. This V6 should be used in a lot of the (smaller) 80's Mercedes NG-Trucks or Trucks like the 1222 (AF). However, I found the engine itself for sale several times. Maybe I should just message Matt and he will try to put it into redroot while you're not looking :P

@@lmm I would really enjoy seeing that. They are really fine engines. Mercedes once decided they want a V6 for their trucks so they basically just took their V8 and got rid of two cylinders and thus it really rumbles. It's one of those sounds you hear and you immediately go (without looking) "Jep, that's a old Mercedes with the Om421 V6. The weird key is for a castell lock. common in flammable or explosive environments. stops opening without the right key

most likely explanation for the dual direction speedo is its driven off the hydralic drive so a dual direction was easier

The speed per direction is probably due to the nature of the hydraulic transmission.

The keys for the engine compartment are made by fortress interlocks in Wolverhampton they are designed so only certain keys will work and if I’m right you can’t remove the key when the door is open they are a safety feature more than anything

Well I suppose it is a very uncommon lock design, but the key will come out, else how could you unlock the other locks on the door!

I suspect the reason the speedo changes direction with the loco is actually to make it cheaper, as the wheel turns one way, current flows one way through the speedo, driving the needle one way, then when you set off in the other direction, and the current is reversed, no extra wiring needed

@@lmm Hmmm. Interesting, all I need is a locomotive then to go with the hound I already have. He'd love it. His favourite places to be are on the window sill of our kitchen - which I should point out is on the first floor and accessed via a wall and the garage roof! - the front passenger seat if my mx5 when the roof's down (he's a border collie sized dog not a cat!) I reckon he'd appreciate the loco roof...

@@lmm the Nevada northern in Ely Nevada. California state railroad museum. Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania. These are the three I know that have a drive a train program. And they range from $75 - $150. They all have their prices online. Do not ask Union Pacific to drive they're big boy!

The strange key and lock are (still) made by Castell and are much more common in electrical plant, they are kind of cool. www.castell.com/ As for the bidirectional speedo, it is much easier/cheaper to make them that way, nothing to do with the user.

it must not have a spark arrestor. when you say hydraulic engine, do you mean hydraulic pump? i've never heard one called an engine before. but then, i've only ever rode trains here in the states at amusement parks, and once when i went to chicago for my army physical, i rode on an amtrack passenger train. i rode trains all over europe though when i was stationed in germany. i almost always had a 30 day eurail pass, and i got my money's worth. the dollar was strong in the 80's, and even on a private's pay i could have weekend adventures regularly. i kinda wish i lived there just so i could volunteer for these rail lines like you do. i love big machines, and wrenching on them would be a treat. the biggest thing i work on now is a ford 5610 tractor i use at the swap meet as a mower.

One would have thought it should have had a spark arrester, but I couldn't see where it would have gone. It's a pump yes, but interchangeable with drive, or engine in terms of what it does. Rail travel in Europe is cheap, punctual and efficient. It is none of these in the UK 😂 Volunteering on railways is a fantastic thing to do, I'm very lucky to be able to.

As interesting as the Baguley-Drewry loco is I could not help noticing that there is a North-British loco there too... A BLOOMIN NORTH BRITISH!!! No less and As rare as the Baguley-Drewry is you should have been driving the NB as they really are like hens teeth personally I would have preferred you to do a "Laurie goes Loco" on that instead

Interesting little loco, with an interesting drive train set-up! Does the hydraulic engine limit torque output then, to create a smoother take off, and help combat stalling and wheelslip? Just curious of it's main advantages over direct drive in these small shunters. It seems like the in-between before diesel electric.

Hydraulic is actually saw alot of use on the railways including on the mainline. The biggest advantage is you can't stall it, and you can creep very slowly with alot of control.

@@lmm Yeah, looked them up - pretty hefty chunks! The modern Class 166 it turns out is also diesel hydraulic, and I saw pretty powerful modern German freight loco also uses the same combo. Still going strong it seems!

I'm working on a road rail vehicle. It'll happen when it happens, no promises on time scale. I don't think there are any fire extinguishing locomotives. Not that I know of anyway.

Every railway has its own internal exams for passing someone out as a driver. On a steam engine you begin as a Cleaner, helping to clean, prep, and learn the Loco, then progress to a fireman, maintain steam pressure by balancing fire and water, and finally on to a driver. I'm a steam driver at four separate railways, and need to fit my final exam to be a fireman at another. Most railways seeing you have the qualifications at another railway will take that into consideration when training you, only needing to learn the route and the way the railway operates. Steam engines are pretty similar, broadly speaking a driver should be able to prep any steam Loco they encounter. With what I do, it's all discussed in advance to come to a safe understanding, I get taken out in the engine to learn it, and when I operate we have someone from the railway in the cab or close at hand.
