The ball toss / the throw up is an essential part of serving. It’s very difficult to develop tricky serves, if your ball toss is not consistent. So, in this video we’ll look into some of the details and specifics that we can focus on, to develop this necessary skill.
We’ll also be looking at the rule around the ‘near vertical’ wording and my interpretation of it. Let me know what you think. Do you agree or disagree?
Thank you for watching 💻

Awesome clip, Craig! One might also mention that the ball must be resting on your open palm. Not concealed by your hand during the toss, or held by your fingers. And that the ball must be above and behind the table. Many players break these rules at beginner level tournaments.

Great video as always. Advanced players tend to go for a high toss because they learned the hard way that, "A good high throw forgives a lot of sins".

Nice video. To extend this it would be good to find out about the high toss serve, what's the point of it and how to learn it. Also, a bit more obscure and something that isn't discusseed anywhere else, using corkscrew spin in serves.

Nice video. I agree with another commentator that the hight of the trow could be given some more consideration. Obviously personal comfort and consistency is the main variable there but what if any effects would you get in principle from a lower or higher throw.

Some players hit the ball on its way up, which gives them an advantage: The serve becomes spinnier and less predictable. But this is illegal, right? The ball must be about to fall or be falling, right?

Is the toss and contact allowed from sides of the table behind the end line ?
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy 5 месяцев назад
Yes. From the side is acceptable but so longs it’s also behind the base line.

As always here. One of the best videos on the subject. Even more interesting for me would be the topic of "hidden serve".

Great video! I've been pondering this topic too. Could you clarify the authority behind the 30-degree guideline? Is it issued or endorsed by the ITTF?
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy 7 месяцев назад
It actually still states 45 degrees 🙂 www.ittf.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/HMO-17th-edition-July-2023.pdf

@TheTableTennisServiceGuy Well, as I read it, only 'a few degrees' are allowed'. Quote: "This means it must rise within a few degrees of the vertical, rather than within the angle of 45 that was formerly specified"
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy 7 месяцев назад
I agree with the wording. The ‘few degrees’ that they state, seems to match the 30 degrees previously stated. racketinsight.com/table-tennis/serving-rules-in-table-tennis/

@TheTableTennisServiceGuy 30 degrees is definitely more than "a few." ;) Anyways, I agree with your view that judgment is key. The umpire isn't able to measure the angle in real time anyway. Once again, it's a very interesting video!

@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy Brilliant video (as usual), Craig. I really like the calm style and especially the logical explanations, which are quite rare in table tennis videos.
