The Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year is a scotch that many people choose to go to first. Something about the writing on the canister, or the word of a friend drives so many people to this whiskey. It's not a big surprise that it's part of the Monkey Shoulder Blend. But my question to you would be... is it as good as you think it is?

When I was in Edinburgh, sitting a pub. A local told me this is a very common Scotch amongst the locals. It was the first whiskey I tried over there!

I always think of this as the "Wild Turkey 101" of Scotch. It's a great introduction to the novice or someone new to the whiskey hobby. But It also remains comforting to someone a little further down the road on their whiskey journey. No frills, no surprises, but not going to blow you away either, just a good, solid, dram. I always have a bottle of this on my shelf and it is a great summer evening sipper. Of course, YMMV, but I don't think you can go wrong with stocking this (or the Wild Turkey 101).
@steveno7058
@steveno7058 3 года назад
Too bad this cost $70 USD vs $22 for Wild Turkey. There are much better Scotch at around $70: Bunnahabhain 12, Clynlish 14, Deanston 12, Ardbeg 10, Arran 14, Ledaig 10, Springbank 10, ect
@guiness1100
@guiness1100 3 года назад
@@steveno7058 I would definitely recommend Clynlish, Deanston or Ardbeg (as I have tried and also stock those) over The Balvenie Doublewood. Probably a better "gateway" into scotch is probably Johnnie Walker black (similar price point to WT101).

The overall profile I picked up on is mixed berry jam with fermented honey and maple cereal/bread. For the nose, I got the strawberry/raspberry. It really morphs between the two. I got a hint of dark berry as well. Then the honey kicked in with the funky malt scent which was like fermented honey to me. Some of this translates to the palate as well which seems to be simpler overall with mainly oak and a hint of smoke. It's a good scotch, if you ask me.

My experience is the exact reverse of yours. The first few tries, I thought it was good but not special. But over the years, I’ve grown to love it as a very well balanced Scotch. These days, it’s always on my whisky shelf. I’m not trying to invalidate your review! But it’s evolved differently on my palate.
@nosidamde

My experience is the same Shawn! Most bars in my area don't even have a single malt on the shelf, and if they do it will be Glenlivet 12. This Balvenie 12 Double Wood is far superior to the Glenlivet 12 and the price reflects that in my opinion. This will always be in my modest collection for being a great single malt that I will always go back to.
@TheWhiskeyDictionary

Interesting how you both love it. Im glad you do as its totally fine, my point i was making is that its one that doesn't hold up to nostalgia especially when many will have this as their first whisky.

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I agree that many will, but at the cost to a friend supplying it. I'm a great example of that with many of my friends, which I'm always so excited to have them try to see their face after the first sip... Of course they're smiling wide by the third rocks glass! I was not fortunate enough to start off with something this good, and I wouldn't have considered it because of the extra cost. Glenlivet 12 was actually mine! Back then I wasn't going to spend anymore than I had to just to try one I may have completely regretted.

@seefoe5

Was pretty disappointed with this at first, but I've loved it ever since my second try. Not a super complex flavor profile, and as you say the finish is minimal, so I wouldn't necessarily reach for this if I'm sitting down to enjoy a whisky specifically. But it makes for the perfect end-of-day dram to go along with a good book or what have you.

I agree with your sentiment. "If you try this later you're not really enjoying this now." I tried at a bar and thought it was woody and bitter. Was gifted a bottle and pored a dram after the 2nd debate. Very similar experience: if I added enough water it made a nice highball. It did get sweeter and lose the bitter with a teaspoon of water. Had to wash it down with peat though.

Barely got around to this Scotch. My experience is about the same with the exception of the finish. To me it lingered for a bit, but then again I did take a good break from whisky and that could have contributed to the longer finish. One thing though when I added a drop of water the nose and palate revealed some sort of mustiness and it reminded me of the Balcones Baby Blue Corn Whiskey. Give that a try and let me know if i'm crazy lol. Also just found out that we get it at 43% Canada is 40% 🤦🏻‍♂ and for almost double the price than us, WTH. Anyway Cheers

@mtpanning 2 года назад
I laughed at this every time he said it, especially after going on about the right way to say it. Also, I find the whole idea of "beginner whisky" (or entry, or gateway or whatever) to be pretty wrong-headed. My regular drams tend to be heavily peated and often high proof, but why should that mean I wouldn't like something sweet and light on occasion?
@TheWhiskeyDictionary

Strange as I watched several Scottish people pronounce it, read its pronunciation, and saw how the distillery pronounces it... if it's said differently colloquially then I found no evidence of that aside from this comment

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Not a big deal, my good man. The big thing is not the sound of the syllables - which you have pretty much correct - but that you tend to strongly accent the first syllable, which is something that I've never heard anyone do. Mic is right that it should be the second syllable. Most people shorten the sound of the second syllable a bit from what Mic wrote so that they say "bahl-VEH-nee," but "bal-VAY-knee" is also well within range. But "BAL-veh-nee" sounds wrong. Here is a video of Bavenie's longtime, iconic master distiller, David Stewart, who ought to be about the world's foremost authority on this subject. Cheers! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CUYHMRCmlGE.html

Oh WOW, chilled, colored and at 43... Why do "intro to whisky" brands always have to strip away flavor and mouth feel, deceive (color added) and cut the ABV ? It is the case where I live that 90% of the small liquor stores only carry this type - or worse - and think: "Scotch single malts just don't sell". Well, not in their stores they don't.

I do agreed with your tasting notes despite ppl keep telling how delicious and great the Balvenie 12. For me it's just a overprice basic scotch and quite forgettable. I would buy the Doublewood if additional few more years of maturation in sherry oak cask instead american oak. Also, for me it's not a good sipping whisky as the flavour dissipate quite fast in the glass.

I agree that this is a good bottle... but not great. It could be so much better if they would up the ABV and reduce the amount of filtration (or chill filtering... whatever is happening). I believe that David Steward was very successful at the sherry finish because they successfully mask the presence of American Oak that might be slightly exhausted.
