The Bamboo Flute was a Secret Weapon??

Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute in Japan that has a history of over 1,300 years in Japan. It’s a very simple instrument with just 5 holes in bamboo, but what is bumpy stuff on the end? This is actually the root of the bamboo, but why did they always use this part?
One theory says that it might have been because people used the Shakuhachi as a weapon. During the Edo period, there was a Buddhism sect that used the Shakuhachi for their training. They would wear a basket over their face to hide their ego, and travel everywhere as they collected donations from the people. But because they would sometimes go through dangerous places they had a chance of being attacked by bandits. In such a situation, they would use the bumpy end of the Shakuhachi to fight.
Yeah, I guess it would hurt a lot if you were hit by this.

Fun fact: the thin rooty stalk of a bamboo is called rattan, and it's a popular material to use for both shakuhachi and eskrima sticks. They are very durable and tough. So Buddhist monks essentially have a musical fighting stick. One that can actually crack a skull.

At that time the government was heavily restricting travel. These monks were one of the few group allowed mostly free travel because Buddhism. Many different groups would don that disguise so they could move from one place to another. That makes a lot of sense--bamboo Is really light and durable. I am confused about one thing: the name, "shakuhachi" ...does this mean "eight shaku"? if so, what is a shaku? EDIT: Okay I just did the math, and with 5 holes, that means a shakuhachi musician can play 32 possible notes (2^5) OR... use 3 holes for 8 possible "chords" and 2 holes for 4 possible notes within each chord This is just a guess though
@yaboibingus8626
@yaboibingus8626 Год назад
the name is actually a reference to its length! 1 shaku is an archaic measurement equivalent to 30.3 cm, or just barely under 1 foot. the 'hachi' refers to an extra eight-tenths of a shaku in length, thus the standard instrument is about 1.8 shaku long. hope this helps!

The root and base of the bamboo is the thickest part and is treasured both for tone as well as the fact that there is only one base per stalk. Sort of like how the tsuka of katana often display the oyatsubu/crown node portion of the stingray skin. There is only one oyatsubu per ray and only one root section per stalk of bamboo. I think the fact that it can be and was used as a weapon is great, but the root acting as a club is likely a byproduct and not a primary feature.

Reminds me of a less blatantly weaponized version of the Mandalorian Bes'bev; A flute forged out of Mandalorian iron with one end being sharpened to a point.

So same logic as a sheleighly. "What weapons? All I've got are my walking stick and flute." Welp I've got my next dnd character.

I once found a snake in my yard and got Hella scared for my dogs, I locked the dogs up, grabbed a broomstick, and kind of started prodding the fella until it grabbed on to start climbing it, I proceeded to walk to edge of the yard, having to switch which end of the broom I was holding because the thing had crawled over halfnof it towards me, and when I reached the fence I Yeeted it over the fence into the empty plot next door.

Ninjas would actually play these flutes disguised as wandering flute players and put Poisson darts and blades in it so that in the flick of their wrist they can send a deadly weapon on their way to a threatening person or maybe their target

Video game called Samurai Warriors introduced me to the Monk with a basket for a helmet and I thought they were cool and the basket looked like more protection then the farmers with loin cloth bare chested and only a piece of wood held on their heads by either cloth wrap or the persons long hair as the only armor they wore... Courageous just pure courage...

In the comedic anime "Kyatto Ninden Teyande!", one of the antagonists, the crow ninja Karamaru, often disguised himself as a monk, basket on head and shakuhachi in hand. The disguise doubled as a special type of power armor for him that gave him a villainous mid season power-up. For those curious, "Kyatto Ninden Teyande!" was dubbed for western audiences as "Samurai Pizza Cats", and you can easily find both online. The original japanese in particular should still be on RU-vid as of this comment. Highly recommend giving it a watch.
