It's a pleasure watching people discover the music I grew up with. I still get chills when the Staples join in on this classic ballad. Mavis Staples breathes soul into anything that she utters and Levon Helm is so smooth and down to earth, to listen to him sing is like chatting with an old friend. I love seeing you so enamored by such gifted artists. Peace. ✌

I think I am the luckiest guy around. I have seen the Staples. The Band. Janis. Bruce Springsteen early. Hollies. Beatles. Led Zeppelin. The Who. The Cream. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Byrds. Mamas & the Papas. Bob Dylan. Joan Collins. Joni. Crosby Stills Nash and Young. And they are part of the classic wonderful. And more than dozens of other concerts. My father was rich and flew me to concerts. He didn't care for the music but I did. I am old but have seen the best.

I had the great good fortune to hear/see Mavis Staples and her band as the headliners at the Zoo Bar Music Festival (07/19&20/2019), 10 days after her 80th birthday. The woman is a force of nature. Her recent album "We Get By" is most highly recommended.

It's half mandolin and half guitar. I do believe that exact model was the only one Gibson ever made. Everything you said it exactly right. Who would've thought that a bunch of Canadians and a hillbilly from Arkansas would come make up such a unique bluesy bluegrass soulful country blend of fucking genius. That's they only way I can describe The Band. Fucking genius. Sorry for the language but it's gotta be said.

Everyone's already commented where this clip is from and why so I'll not repeat the same. Suffice to say, the film of that final concert is well worth checking out. The Band was originally formed as a backing group to one of the early Rock 'n' Rollers, Ronnie Hawkins, and at that time were known as The Hawks. Drummer Levon Helm is from Arkansas, while the rest of the group are Canadians. While Hawkins only managed a small handful of hits, their version of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love is blistering hot and features Robbie Robertson, the same guitarist as in The Weight. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-juIdf7llR_A.html In 1962, the group decided to pursue a more R&B approach than Hawkins wanted so they parted ways with their mentor. Hawkins had worked them hard, rehearsing after shows instead of partying like most bands did. The result was the tightest band on every club circuit. For a few years, they were also the best band without a hit record, though they tried. At the height of 1964's Beatlemania, they released a few singles that failed to attract much of an audience, though they're decent tracks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w1SJZGhg2QI.html&ab_channel=TOKENHIPPIE54TOKENHIPPIE54 When they'd begun to lose hope of making it, a contact brought them to the attention of Bob Dylan, who hired them to back him for his upcoming tour. He'd switched to playing electric from his acoustic Folk roots and not all of his Folk purist fans were pleased. They have great shows, then get booed mercilessly at others. They stuck it out and it made them stronger for it. Dylan's influence also gave them a new direction, adding rootsy Blues Folk to their repertoire. This is when they adopted the name The Band, because behind both Hawkins and Dylan, that's what they were. They released their first album in 1968 and had instant success, managing many hits until they broke up after this final concert.

In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. "electric" tour. Levon and the Hawks were recommended. With Dylan, the Hawks played a series of concerts from September 1965 through May 1966, billed as Bob Dylan and the Band. This is how they got their name.

I loved your reaction to this magic moment in live music history. The Band was drummer/singer Levon Helm (RIP) from Arkansas. The rest of the band were Canadians; Robbie Robertson guitar, Rick Danko (RIP) bass and 4th verse, Richard Manuel (RIP) organ on this & Garth Hudson piano on this. They were Dylan's backing band for several years prior to going on their own. The Staples Singers were Roebuck (Pops) Staples (RIP) and his daughters, Mavis 2nd verse Cleotha & Yvonne (Both RIP) They had their own career and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama. If I had only one song to listen to from here on (I'm an old fart) this would likely be it. Perfect from start to finish. Again, your reaction made my day!

Not only did they write the songs, sing and play the instruments, most of them also drove the bus, worked the mixing board, and set up the equipment. @@Mark-tu5yl Were you there? That would be cool as hell. I wish I'd seen The Band live. I saw The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 64 for my sixth birthday. Best birthday surprise ever !. I also saw Dylan at least a half dozen times. He was a different breed of cat, the most I ever heard him speak was maybe a dozen words all the way down to zero words and live he could be great or he could suck. He just didn't care what the audience thought.

If her voice doesn’t immediately fill you with an incredible amount of joy something is wrong. Like you said, it’s like a weight being lifted off of you. It really. When you hear this, everything else just falls away. I love it so much. This is THE EXACT THING that I live for.

The Band were the white group. The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples, the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis.

Yes Rxyce, this collaboration was and is legendary. Two incredible bands that together created a masterpiece; especially at a time when people needed to see diversity coming together to do something great, and it was more than great. Beautiful is not a strong enough word for this performance.

The Weight (RIP Levon Helm 🙏), and The Staples 🙌. You've got to do a review of The Staples songs "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" recorded at Muscle Shoals FAME Studios. A lot of great music came out of that studio with artists from Country, Rock, Soul, R&B from the 60s through the 80s...

Yes it is a "feel good " song. It has been said that this song "The Weight" transcends space and time, and brings many disparate people and ideas together. There is a movement called playing for change, and they often record songs *played around the world* Their recordings feature singers and musicians around the world all playing the same song "Together" Playing For Change feature Ringo Starr, Robbie Robertson (from The Band - and in the video you react to here) and a ton of others well known and unknown around the world ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ph1GU1qQ1zQ.html

I love that comment: "I feel like I'm being served a 5 course meal when I expected a 2." The best reaction to this song I've seen. Thank you. I love this song... my favorite trivia bout this great tune was that Roebuck 'Pops' insisted on singing the verse he sang about Moses, and no one was going to deny him.

It's so fun watching young people find pleasure in song that we grew up on. I'm 65 and still remember the Staple Singers (great gospel) singing with Levon Helms (RIP, look to see him in the movie with Mark Walberg "Shooter" "Still got the shovel"). Next listen the Robbie Roberson tune, "Somewhere down the crazy River" "Oh, This is sure stirring up some ghosts for me, You like it now, but you'll learn to love it later".

Allow me to say this wasn't their final performance though it was billed as such and they did stop touring for some time. Personally, I saw them in 1994 in Washington DC and though older, they still gave a great performance. I was a little surprised they played 'The Weight' as the third song in the concert. I figured they would leave it as their encore. Shows what I know. When the concert ended and the fans were all yelling for an encore, the house lights came up and that was it. No encore. Still, one of my favorite groups.
