Scribe. You have just been schooled by the Band and their special guests the Staple Singers. Pops and his daughters were very popular church singers led by Mavis, who is still working today. The Band respected the group enough to ask them to use their voices to carry the weight in this song. As a result, we are all a little closer to the ties that bind us all together. Carry on, brothers and sisters. Carry on.

It's fun to watch young people react to these great songs for the first time. I grew up listening to groups that are now rock legends back in the late sixties and seventies, this was all new music. No one had ever created music like this. Of course, my parents didn't understand and told me to turn that crap off. I feel fortunate to have grown up in a time when there was so much musical artistry. I doubt it will ever happen again.

I am 57 years old, and I just love watching all the young folk reacting to the music I grew up listening to. We were so blessed musically during the 70's....There has not since been any decade that came close to the diverse talent of the musical geniuses and absolute icons of our generation. There is good music out there at times, but as far as rock and soul genres the 70's was and I believe will always be unmatched.

Robbie Robertson was discussing having the Staple here. The Staples were the first group to cover this song after The Band first put it out. Robertson was concerned that Mavis' voice was so powerful it would drown everyone else out. She's still out there singing today, btw. And as great as ever.

Thank you for doing this reaction. This group was a large part of my childhood. My parents were countrified hippie stoners, and I was raised on a farm. The whole rock/country swirling thing was going on at the time, and it would culminate in this little band called The Eagles(sound familiar?) The Band are super influential, and it makes me smile to see a younger person appreciate them. Nice review.
