The Band used to be Dylan's backing band in the very early days of his transition to electric. This performance was from the last waltz, the Band's last concert which was filmed by Scorsese. They had a whole lot of guests including Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison and others. The best bits were just the Band playing from their wonderful catalog of songs. The best rock and roll film of all time.

That's quite common. For example: .......... Ozzy Osbourne re-wrote ALL the verses of War Pigs. Sometimes he would sing the original version and sometimes the new one. Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was constantly changing. He always sang the same first two verses but the last two were frequently replaced by different ones, and often two or more new verses were added to that. David Bowie was forever changing Heroes; adding new verses, swapping them around, changing them and dropping them.

"The Band" was Bob Dylan's backup band. Somewhere around 1967, Dylan had a serious motorcycle accident and, I believe, broke his neck. His recovery period of about a year gave the band to become The Band. They were housed in a house in upstate New York. It was painted pink. They worked in the cinderblock basement with an out of tune piano, and recorded Music From Big Pink, their first album.

The Band lived for a while in a house in Woodstock, NY they named “Big Pink”, and set up a music room in the basement. Dylan stopped by with his typewriter and guitar every morning, which is where ‘The Basement Tapes’ were made. It’s also where The Band’s first album came from. Dylan offered to help on that, but they wanted something that was theirs. Since he was there almost every day though, he did co-write two songs or something.

The Band was Bob Dylan's band for a long time. Bob had a motorcycle accident and didn't perform for several years - this was his first live performance in several years. The Band went on in the meantime without him and made many fantastic songs such as Take a Load Off Fanny and others. They are amazing musically and vocally. Bob is as you know an amazing songwriter - for The Band, The Byrds and others. Bob himself is amazing and he sings very well for his music, This clip is from the movie The Last Waltz which is about the Band's final performance and you should see - amazing music and performances.

The Band were The Hawks, backing Arkansas rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins in the early 60’s. 4 Canadians + drummer Levon Helm, also from Arkansas. They left Hawkins and briefly were Levon and The Hawks, then Dylan hired them to back him up when he went electric in ‘65. Then they went on their own again finally as The Band when Dylan semi-retired in ‘67 following a motorcycle accident. They would reunite behind him a number of times in the 70’s for glorious live performances that were captured on Before the Flood and here at The Last Waltz in ‘76.

No "American Idol" or "The Voice" deciding who "makes it" and who goes home, no Auto Tune in studios, etc. Can you imagine Dylan, Garcia, Neil Young, Tom Petty, or Dr. John, etc. auditioning for "The Voice"?? You're out of here! As mentioned, this is an exert from "The Last Waltz" which was the last appearance by The Band. It's an absolute must see movie for musical education of the period! The Band was a Canadian-American rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. Originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins and later Bob Dylan, the group released its debut album, Music from Big Pink, in 1968 to critical acclaim. Described by music critic Bruce Eder as "one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics. And he is a wonderful deep human being......very popular in the Black community in New York.

The Band began as a backup up group called the Hawks for Ronnie Hawkins, founded by lead guitarist Robbie Roberston in 1958. Then they were a back up band for Bob Dylan during his tour in 1966. They released their first album, Big Pink. Named for the color of the house they lived in at Woodstock, New York. They broke up in 1976. There was a documentary made of their last concert by acclaimed film director Martin Scorsese. It is was put in the Library of Congress in 2019. It was held on Thankskgiving day at the San Francisco Winterland Ballroom. A full course dinner was served for all 5,000 attendees! Guest performers were Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Join Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton and the Staple Singers. I suggest you react to the Band's song "The Weight" performed with the Staple Singers. It is arguably their most well known song. The group continued performing without Robbie Robertson. The keyboardist, Richard Manuel, committed suicide by hanging in 1986 just hours after a performance. Rick Danko, the bassist, died in 1999 in his sleep, from a heart attack. He was only 52. The drummer, Levon Helm, died of cancer in 2012. Garth Brooks, the other keyboardist, is still alive at 83. He was the oldest member. A classically trained musician. He was named the the most brilliant organist of rock and roll by Keyboard magazine. He also played four types of saxophone and accordion. All members were multi-intrumentalists. Robbie Robertson is still alive. He went onto do quite a bit of film scoring. Just signed up for a new one. I'm a native of NYC and a child of the 60's. My first concert was at 11 years old seeing Three Dog Night with my progressive 5th grade teacher in 1971. I saw Al Green and Harry Chapin at Central Park for free in 1973. There were a lot of free concerts back then. P.S. YES is one of my all time favorite groups. Saw them many times. In the summer of 1977, in one month, I saw Led Zeppelin, ELP-Emerson, Lake and Palmer-with a 70 piece symphonic orchestra, Pink Floyd and YES. Tickets were $12.50. You do great work.

"Cripple Creek" is great. The Band was a superb group, with a long history. They backed Ronnie Hawkins for years, and worked HARD doing it! Then they backed Bob Dylan from about 1966 through the early 70's, as well as doing their own albums. Bob Dylan wrote the song "Forever Young" for his children. I saw him play it in Toronto in 1974, backed by The Band. Have seen him do it various times since. His fans took it as being for all of them...but it was a personal song for his own kids. It is a different song from the Rod Stewart one with the same title, and came out many years prior to the Rod Stewart song, which was pretty much just an imitation of the Dylan song. 4 members of The Band came from Canada, and one from the USA (that being the drummer, Levon Helm). Robbie Robertson, the lead guitar player, has gotten a lot of attention over the years, and has done solo albums. There is one more verse to "Forever Young" but it's not in the video.

Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for his songwriting. He has so many incredible songs. I hope you check into more of his work. He was also influential in the civil rights movement. If you react to Hurricane you will see what I mean. Hurricane Carter was a promising middleweight boxer who was falsely accused and convicted of murder. He eventually was exonerated after spending 19 years in prison. Dylan didn't pull any punches in describing the racially motivated handling of the case by the cops and the judicial system. He took a lot of flack for his stance but he didn't care.

Dylan wasn't much in the voice department but his words and message are/were poetry... everlasting. Love this song so much.

Dylan's arguably the greatest American songwriter in rock history. But when it comes to singing, if he was singing for shit he wouldn't get a whiff. That's why his songs, IMO, always sound better when being covered by someone else. Like Hendrix doing All Along The Watchtower, or Clapton doing Knockin' On Heavens Door, or my personal favorite you should maybe take a swipe at reacting to...............the late, great Johnny Winter doing Highway 61 Revisited!

The Last Waltz is a phenomenal concert film and there are so many noteworthy songs as The Band played their final concert with plenty of guest stars. Try "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Caravan" featuring Van Morrison, "Such A Night" with Dr. John, "Life Is A Carnival", and of course "The Weight" with the Staple Singers! Enjoy!
