Great video. Thinking on the fly and coming up with solutions whilst the band are running through numbers is critical (and stressful!) but you did it and babe up with a great solution.

Great topic! I'm currently reading "Classical Recording: A Practical Guide in the Decca Tradition". In the classical world the goal is to capture a performance, so bleed is embraced more-or-less completely as is the sound of the room. Mics with good off-axis responses are a starting point. Physically positioning the performers and mics is also a huge part of the process. Cheers!

A fresh perspective. I haven't been able to pull this off but I've been using dynamic mics that duck the drums whenever sang into, making the bleed and phase shift uneven.

Embrace the bleed rather than trying to separate and fail. My first thought was something figure 8 but it there are lots of factors involved, great results!

That's a good question. But in general, yes. It's kinda like putting a LDC on toms. Then you try a SDC and realize the bleed is so much smoother.

U ever tried of having like SM58 as the drummers vocal mic, and having another SM58 near that other one placed so that there is only drums and as little vocals as possible, and then combining them and flipping the phase on the second 58? The closer the mics are to each others, the more perfect the destructive interference would be, but if u have them very close, u would get vocals on both mics and then they would cancel the vocals too

That’s a very oldschool technique (Wall of Sound-inspired). While in theory it’s a useful trick, in practice the system is nowhere near linear enough to achieve musically useful cancellation. Better to use a supercardioid or hypercardioid mic with optimal positioning - hence why Beta 56s are semi-commonly used ;)

Yeah I love the motivation behind this idea. I've tried stuff like that, and it's hard to get it to work. The Lewitt did that sort of thing, but it still was impossible to get the bleed out enough. So this time, I embraced the bleed.

if possible ask the drummer to play softer for less bleed and don't compress vox tracks, automate or use vocal rider as compression worsen and exaggerate the bleed, and use dynamic mics if possible for first choice.

I actually had an assignment in university tackling a take of a live drummer, who also happened to be the lead. dope ass band, and you can download all raw stems for free: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1K5MSHW60Qk.html. found it especially difficult since he wasn't that loud, so i also ended up having to use the vocal mic as a part OH/room capture.
