The tone that Paul Butterfield is getting out of that harp is just crazy good. This was back far enough time wise that there would be no pedals involved in the set-up. Just one very soulful player.

I've seen the movie a few dozen times and I've often wondered what happened to Garth's organ sound. It's way out in front here, but I gather this was an outtake. If so, who's responsible for turning Garth down on the official version? The Band was a phenomenon, but we've always known that it was largely Garth that made them unique.
@bamadeadhead

David Zasloff it was the maker of the movie I think man, Scorsese...he edited him out for some reason. He prob shut a door on him or something, little man’s disease at its best. Maybe stubbed his toe?
@hansspa3892
@hansspa3892 5 лет назад
I think you guys are both very much mistaken. Scorsese made the movie The Last Walts. This is winterland. Also everything is shot from one angle and that’s a dead giveaway that it’s not a professional movie.
@razortube101
@razortube101 3 года назад
Robbie and Martin edited the Last Waltz alot of songs were mixed differently to how they were played live with some parts being over-dubbed after the fact,for instance Rick's bass due to the fact on some tracks it was slightly out of tune.The only instrument that was never overdubbed and remains the same as the night it was recorded are the drums

I was fortunate enough to be 18 when this happened. The movie was shown at a few large old theaters such as the Tower In Philly. It was like being at the concert. I was there, and I can tell you, JRR fucked up, he blew the intro lick, which didn't line up with the drug-fueled, god-like image they were all trying to project....he then tried to blame it on a faulty guitar or his guitar-tuners off-stage...ANYTHING to deflect from a simple mistake on the guitar (the horizontally-quick changes are formidable). The rest of the clip (after replacing JRR's supposedly-defective guitar) was MAGNIFICENT thanks to JRR's ballsy playing (after the initial dropping the ball), Levon Helm, and of course, PB himself. A fuck-up is forgivable; lying about what happened is not, although one can understand his nervousness and embarrassment).
