Well, this is oddly ironic. I was "almost" a Bangle. I answered the ad and had auditioned for the Peterson sisters but I couldn't play barre chords on guitar, so even though they loved my voice, they chose Susanna. Then later, I worked at Chrysalis Records. I used to go through the A&R "reject" box against company policy because you never knew if you would find a gem in there or not. Well, I heard an "unsolicited" demo of "We Belong" and played the song for A&R in Los Angeles and thought it would be a good song for Benatar. Soon after, I left Chrysalis and then went to work for Columbia Records at CBS. I got a call from a woman who worked for the Musician's Union who knew I was a singer and said that she urgently needed a singer for a Benatar session at MCA Whitney Studios. She said Benatar was recording a song and they initially wanted a children's choir to sing vocals on a song they were recording but the kids were out of tune. So in desperation, they wanted someone with a "young sounding voice" to come in and multi-track vocals to mimic a "children's choir" to save money in studio time, so this woman called and asked if I could go there and do it. Of course, I said YES! When I got there, Neil played me the parts and I realized it was the song I recommended for them a couple of years before! How cool it was that I found the song for them and actually got to sing on it to boot! My vocals are the "children's choir" at the end of "We Belong". It was surreal to see a bunch of kids in Benatar's video, lip synching to MY vocals!
Nice cover of Pat Benatar's 1986 hit, which is my favorite song of hers. Susanna, Vicki and Debbi give it a new arrangement and the usual great vocals. This compliments the original; something the Bangles usually do with a cover song (see "Hazy Shade of Winter" or "Where Were You When I Needed You")
Benatar didn't write this song. Eric Lowen was the songwriter. Dan Navarro may have been in on it as well. I don't know if Pat Benatar wrote many, if any of the hits she had. I believe the studio chiefs had them done for her.
Thank you Mark:) i agree 1000 % i hope people will discover this song and make it a major download:) i wish i knew how to promote and get more ppl to watch
