The Base MK8 GTI Is INCREDIBLE! Here's Why!

After over a year and half of hoping to drive the entry level MK8 Golf GTI I finally had the chance after another fantastic subscriber reached out and offered me his to try. I have been looking forward to driving this car the most as I am a great believer that the entry level performance hatch is a bit of a bargain when you can easily spend over £50,000 these days on other hot hatch backs.
After driving the MK8 Golf R last year in April 2021 ( • MY FIRST DRIVE IN THE ... ) I have since had multiple experiences in VW hatchbacks. Including, but not limited to, the MK8 GTI Clubsport ( • MY FIRST DRIVE IN THE ... ), the MK8 GTI 45 Edition ( • MY FIRST DRIVE IN THE ... ), MK7.5 GTI TCR ( • MY FIRST DRIVE IN THE ... ) and the MK7.5 GTI Performance Pack ( • MY THOUGHTS ON THE MK7... ). So its safe to say I have had some great experiences, in recent months, with all the very best performance hatches which Volkswagen have to offer!
So, how did I find the entry level MK8 GTI in DSG form? Well, after watching this video you will know the answer 👍

The new gtis and most modern cars don’t have brake servos anymore, they have electronic brake boosters which allow the abs and brake booster to be all one assembly. It will feel very electronic because there is no physical assistance like you get with a normal servo brake system, it’s all done electronically

GTI MK 8 is a great all round road car. It’s quick enough while being efficient. It’s not bolted to the road so it safely moves around under foot. It handles very well with good front end bite. To me this is the biggest improvement over the MK 7.5 pp which I owned before the MK8. Reminds me of the TCR turn in. For the best results DCC is a must as it really gives the breath of ability to all road surfaces and how you want to drive on any given day. You soon get used to the infotainment and you start to appreciate the uncluttered dash which doesn’t collect all that dust. Love the graphics which are bright and clear and customisable to your own taste. From the long motorway trip to the country road it does it all very well and in supreme comfort. It may not excel at one thing it’s just good at everything, and at the end of the day it’s a GTI with a long history behind it so you know you are buying something with a pedigree.

I owned a focus st-4 280bhp and this gti was as quick. The gti also felt brilliant that it could go from bouncy comfort to sport it was very close to the focus st

Hello from the u.s just got my 2022 gti ( now my 5th) in 25 years) in yellow with the dsg ..love it .. and i thought my mk7! Was good.. great car!

Great video Sam, love your enthusiasm. Good to see positive comments re the ‘base’ GTI. Torn between a Mk8 GTI Manual and Clubsport, more interested in enjoyment and engagement, how do you reflect on the CS after this drive. Also any plans to drive the 128ti?

Thank you for the positive feedback! I will hopefully drive a manual MK8 GTI soon and I feel this could be the sweet spot as the DSG version was fantastic. For sure the CS offers more punch but this does come at the expense of comfort and added price. The base GTI does offer a great balance and the savings can go towards a track experience in a sports car a few times a year...…that is what I often do lol. Nothing wrong with the CS though as I still feel its an easy to live with daily. I do not have anything planned with the 128ti and in my opinion the GTI is a safer bet as they know this segment really well whereas BMW are very new to the FWD hot hatch game

The body roll is much less than mk7 and much less under steering. The steering wheel feel much more precise than mk7 not sure where you took your info from. Yes, the lack of buttons and the plasticy feel than increases each year is disappointing but the mechanical aspect improved alot from previous version

Love my GTi, the handling is superb and you soon get used to the infotainment( i'm one of the lucky ones with no major issues in nearly a year) suprisingly quick car when on the move given its weight. The only thing i don't like is the crap synthetic Playstation like engine sound that come through the speakers so thats switched off!

Hi Sam, thanks for this GTI test. I‘m between the GTI and the GTD 8, in some GTD tests asked themselves if the GTD is in fact the better GTI, plus it is more economical. What do you think? Have you tried the GTD 8 yet.., any thoughts. Thanks mate and keep up the great work and your enthusiasm.

No worries at all! I really enjoyed driving the MK8 GTI as I have always been a fan since the car came out. For me its no contest......I would have the petrol powered GTI all day long but it does depend on your needs. If you really need the super high mpg, no doubt the MK8 GTD can get some fantastic figures, its the one to have. However, I find as a package the GTI hits the sweet sport. Great residuals, fun to drive, comfortable, lots of heritage and you can still get 50mpg out of it if you are careful. It does depend on yours needs but I'd go GTI personally 👍

@@SamAustin There’s also this on Redit. Just got news from the latest VW dealer product meeting... Lots to unpack, I’ll start with GTI. Same trim levels, autobahn trim the only one to get 6speed manual, 10” screens, led grill, ventilated sport seats, a special YELLOW color will be available! Only one unit per dealer that is allocated one, so these will be hot! Base model GTI expected to start at $29,995. For 2023MY, there will be a 40th anniversary GTI Limited Edition! Special wheels, trim, and interior. CORRECTION: the yellow color will be on this anniversary GTI! For Golf R, a $2500 increase in base price is expected. But what’s more interesting is for 2023MY there will be a special “R32 20th Anniversary” available. No word on what exactly that includes. Interesting changes to the 2022 Arteon as well... 300hp, 7spd DSG, special “all black” edition available. VWofA really pulling at the heart strings here!! Lots of exciting stuff coming. 6speed only on the autobahn will ruffle some feathers, could mean good value coming back for mk7.5 6speeds.

@@escos0410 The R32 is 20 years old this year, it’s more likely a special edition R. I think if they brought out another GTI variant they would piss off an already very pissed of GTI fan base.

Base trim is enough Golf has that super annoying moonroof squeaking noise. Base trim without sunroof is great! Also only no keyless entry not a big deal

That's a really tough choice! For more dynamic fun I would go with the MK4.5 ST for a better all rounder it would be the GTI. You cannot go wrong with either though they are both fantastic for the road and for long term ownership also👍

So your a golf r owner? Did you have problems with creaking and rattles?

Nope. My MK7 Golf R has not had any rattles over the 5 years. The suspension creaked after lock down as the car was not getting driven but that went away after a few drives 👍

Very similar to the MK8 GTI so for the savings in price I do not blame you for not upgrading. The MK7 GTI is a cracking car 👍

I touched on some points in the video and as I drove the manual GTI MK7.5 Performance Pack its hard to get an 100% like for like. Although its pretty close. I would say the MK8 GTI looked sportier to me but felt just as refined for the most part as the older MK7.5. Hard to split between them as they are very similar although my big point is that I preferred the steering feel in the MK7's over the MK8's but the MK8's handle fantastically also. You cannot go wrong with both so from a price point of view the MK7's offer great value as both cars are built on the same MQB platform 👍

@@SamAustin I have a GTI PP and have been looking at upgrading. I have also looked at the TCR and Clubsport but am thinking that I would not be able to utilise these models in todays traffic. There is also the fuel economy. What are your thoughts and would you stick with my current car?

Couldn't agree more, the GTi no matter which one you choose can be had for a nice chunk less than the R which as we all know is now over that crucial 40k figure.

My Favorite golf would have to be the mk5 for sure mk5 gti Edition 30 with ko4 turbo not driven the mk8 but driven ( mk4 mk5 mk6 mk7.5 )

Thank you for the positive feedback! I would say that the GTI is all the car you will ever need but if you want something with more power and unlimited traction then the MK8 R is the way to go.......great in the wet weather like we get in the UK 👍

@@SamAustin would absolutely recommend taking one for a drive. Had mine now for 6 months, just put an m performance exhaust on and it makes a massive difference
