Great points. When I teach this I call afterload the "resistance" because it's actually the SVR and PVR, as you know. I also draw the diagram of preload, contractility, and afterload in that order and position them visually around a heart. So, R heart venous return (is the VOLUME) or preload. The heart's in the middle of the graphic and represents contractility (FORCE, for lack of a better word), then afterload to the far right (representing the RESISTANCE of the blood being ejected from the aorta into the rest of the body.
