This was suppose to be a few brief examples of suggested highlight colors, i.e. what color to highlighting with what color. However, typical of me, I went off topic. So instead we go over various basic principles in highlighting and painting in general. Should work out well for you beginners out there.

I like that you were willing to just go through the whole process. There seems to be this stigma about showing anything that might be perceived as "wrong" or a "mistake" but I feel that its actually beneficial for someone who is starting out in the hobby and goes looking for help via videos to see that the people making those videos don't always achieve what they want the first time through. Also, "not GW'ing the hell out of it" is an awesome phrase, and for anyone familiar with that style of painting it automatically conjures an image of what you're not aiming for.

I know this comment is ancient, but what exactly is meant by GW'ing the hell out of something? I'm a new painter and would like to know what to avoid. Thanks

+Wesley Saunders Basically, going for extreme, cartoonish highlights with minimal effort towards smooth transitioning. For the longest time, that was sort of the Games Workshop standard when painting miniatures.

I think I know exactly what you mean; space marines with almost black armour and bright colourful edges come to mind

One of the hardest thing I learned was how colors look different when they dry. The worst was highlighting black. I did find middle colors you mentioned very hard to highlight sometimes. The absolute worst were flesh colors for me. Typical Caucasian flesh is simple enough but making a figure look 'elvish' or 'orcish' without copying GW formula is really hard for me.

I very much enjoy your painting videos, and I think your figures turn out fantastic. One question I have is about your palette. You are one of the few RU-vid painters I watch who does not use a wet palette. I am interested in what the rationale for that is, I use a wet palette sometimes but a tile most often, because it's easier to clean. I never use a wet palette to keep paint mixes for days because the pigments just precipitate out and don't always mix back in cleanly.

I prefer to have more control over my paint. With the tile I can thin it or allow it to dry up a bit if I need.

Which option is better? Mixing or buying a few paints of the one colour to highlight? Ie dark blue, medium, then light? I find my mixing isn't consistent or I forget the one I actually mixed giving a varied look at the end. Thank you for the post. Great work

Very helpfull for me as a beginner, all be it i'm also colour blind on reds , greens and browns ! From watching your other videos i see that you have trouble thinning down Vallejo Model for use in the airbrush , have you tried Ultimate Acrylic Airbrush Thinners ? Not sure if you can get hold of it in the States but it getting good reviews here in the UK . It's been formulated to thin any acrylic paint for use in an airbrush .

Hi Dr. Faust, I'm very impressed with your painting skills and it really did inspire me to try it out myself. I was wondering if you can recommend me some good fantasy miniatures to start off with? Warhammer seems a bit expensive for me to start off with.

I can't name one miniature out of the thousands available. Best to pick something you like and interests you.

if your interested in historic miniatures try perry miniatures, their sculpters also sculpt for games workshop so they are good quality. For fantasy miniatures try Hasslefree, and for a good range of everything try foundry. Of coarse these are just my recommendations, so have a look around yourself, and if you go into a games workshop, they will give you a free painting lesson, on a free miniature. Good luck!

How long do the brushes that you use keep a decent point?
@ThePaintingClinic
@ThePaintingClinic 10 лет назад
Depends since there are variations in each brush that don't come out till you start using them. Anywhere from 1 to 4 months.

ThePaintingClinic By the way I love your videos. I really enjoy them - it's interesting and educational to watch your process even though I exclusively use different paints (p3). I live in SD and I am hoping to get up for one of your paint clinics in the nearish future (after recovering from surgeries, etc).
