What is up RU-vid my name is Gio, and I loved The Batman. For a movie that had its production passed around more than a popular girl on prom night, it actually being released was more than enough to shock me. But the fact that it’s also probably the best piece of Batman material we have gotten since The Dark Knight left me more stunned than your average COD 4 match. I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie ends up being my favorite comic book movie of 2022, and yes I know it’s only March, but let that just be testament to the quality of the film. The characters are fantastic. I love these interpretations of both Batman and Selina Kyle, having a more fresh faced Batman works perfectly for this story and him trying to figure out the role Batman and Bruce Wayne plays in Gotham’s future is essential in making this plot work. Not to mention the film has amazing visuals. But yall probably have heard all this before from most content creators who have seen the movie. And as much as I would love to continue in the circle jerk of this film, I wouldn't exactly be bringing anything new to the discussion. I’ll leave the inept praise to someone like @HiTopFilms , as for me I’m here to say The Batman isn’t perfect. As a matter of fact it has one glaring flaw that made me drop my original rating of the film. So If you're curious about what could possibly be wrong about this internet proclaimed masterpiece, then sit back as I explain The Batman’s Fatal Flaw. And if you end up enjoying the video feel free to like, comment, subscribe and turn on the notification bell. So you will always know when I release new content and it helps with algorithm stuff. Also follow me on twitter where my inevitable mental breakdown will be podcasted. Also spoilers warning for if you haven’t seen the movie.

The biggest thing for me was that the pictures the riddler left for batman of the mayor and different people leaving the club were clearly taken from his apartment. I couldnt get over the fact that noone checked to see if there was a camera at that spot to find out how the photos may have been taken

14:33 Ok, I can actually counter that. See, it's only his second year in the cowl and he never had any experience in detective work, or at least not that I know of, so I'm pretty sure him not being a half decent detective was the intent of the writers. The point is he still has a ton of stuff to learn, and that'll probably be shown in the sequel, therefore, you can't really judge him for that. Also, coincidences and conviniences happen in life pretty often; it all depends on chance.
@TheMinskie
@TheMinskie 2 года назад
I would have to disagree with this argument personally. I can see your point though, and I think it'd be pretty cool to see Batman get smarter as the movies progress. But the movie does a lot of things to portray Batman as the smartest good guy character in the entire film. When Alfred tried to solve the Riddler's cypher, Batman was able to figure it out for him in like a jump-cut to the next scene. Gordon nor any of the other cop characters even came close to figuring out any of the riddles. So I think it's too harsh to say Batman was written as not even a half decent detective, or that it was the intention of the writers. I would have preferred if Batman was the one to actually "take down" the riddler. In the end he never stopped any of the riddler's plans except for maybe the assassination of the Belle Real. Overall this batman didn't seem like he was able to do much despite his intelligence.

I get what you are saying and normally I'd agree, but the film could have easily made him more competent as a detective by taking out the convinces. I don't have a problem with people helping out Batman, but because everything was so convenient it minimized Batman’s role. Yes coincidences happen but they shouldn't be whats pushing the plot forward, let alone so many of them.

THANK GOD SOMEONE NOTICED THIS... Everyone is praising this movie for a detective story and call it a masterpiece.... Aside from the first act, the batman did fk all. The best kind of detective stories (Zodiac, Seven, Sherlock, Hercule Poirot... you name it) have a strong and engaging mystery with great rewatchability since you want to revisit the scenes and view them in different light... Huge potential this movie had, the problem was it was sold as a detective story and ultimately failed at it. Otherwise, a great batman story

I’d say looking at these three examples, number two is by far the worst. Like you pointed out, the first one is an easy enough fix, and even so it’s not as massive a leap in logic as one might think. While your fix of Selina offering the drink is better, I think the film’s version is passable. Side note, yes Selina played a huge role, but without Bruce following her as a lead the GCPD would’ve been screwed too. She was the break in the case. The second one is a pretty big problem though. The phone lying around may have been unnoticed, but I haven’t seen the movie in two weeks, I can’t remember if Falcone mentions it in the message. And cockiness can only stretch so far in defense before becoming stupidity. Like you said, why is the body still there? Why didn’t Falcone see to it to have it disposed of immediately? Maybe he is cocky about his position in the city, but this is a bit too much. The third one is in the middle of the first and second. I think that it’s more than likely that a good chunk of GCPD knows what that tool is, especially if their relatives are blue collar or they themselves have experience. I don’t think the “dad carpet business”was necessary, it was a bit obvious. I think it does make sense though that Bruce would have no clue what it is though, given his upbringing. And remember, it was Batman that realized the tool wasn’t just a weapon and theorized it must’ve been used by riddler for a practical purpose when he pulled up the carpet. Carpet cop didn’t think of that. I think you’re aim is a bit off though by saying this makes Batman not a good detective. Without him, most of this doesn’t get solved. The cops wouldn’t have gained selina’s trust at all. That’s if they break the codes and solves the riddles. The biggest problem is that stupid Falcone decision rather than Batman not knowing all.

3 things 1.I think theres theres a difference between flaws and what hurts the movie so these flaws don't bring down for me 2.I also think that the bruce not knowing what the carpet tool was but the cop knowing was supposed be juxtaposition between the rich and the poor so of course bruce wayne doesn't know what the fuck a carpet tool is( and actually now that I think about it I'm pretty sure riddler assumed batman was someone from the gutters so he probably thought that the clue was obvious) 3.I think all these coincidences are to further hammer home that bruce is not competent and that along with changing what it means to be batman he needs to get better

As much as i loved this movie, this version of Batman honestly bothered me because he doesn't fight like Batman. He's too big and tanky. Batman is supposed to be as fast as he is strong, dodging attacks instead of just taking them and walking it off, but they don't capture that at all. The famous hallway trailer scene is a great example of this problem. He takes a hail of machine gun fire to the chest like it's nothing. There's no body armour in the world that can do that, and a true portrayal of Batman would've been jumping around that hallway dodging the shots. He also didn't fight smart enough, even when he thought ahead and used darkness or smoke to his advantage he didn't change his tactics, at that point he should've taken a step back, gone into Stealth mode and started trying to get the drop on enemies, but he just fights the same as always, not taking full advantage of his surroundings. Again, I loved the movie, this was ultimately a small criticism, but its there and I wanted to mention it
@randomth1ngs68
@randomth1ngs68 2 года назад
I really liked the way this batman fought, it fits the iteration. Not only is this his second year, but he’s not a ninja anymore and this also isn’t really he run of the mill comic book movie, sure there are obvious fantastical elements, like that body armor but the concept of batman is inherently a little fantastical, but in this movie he wasn’t trained by the league of assassins, or doing flips over baddies/ jumping across the room from thug to thug. He’s still pretty fast, that first fight scene is an example of just how fast he is, he fully grapples and takes that guy down in like a second or two.
@PotatoPlup
@PotatoPlup 2 года назад
@@randomth1ngs68 yes exactly. This is what people don't get. This is a brand new fresh Batman that doesn't know where he fits in yet. People seem to forget that and immediately grade him on how he isn't like this Batman or that Batman who have been in the game for far longer
@mol7392
@mol7392 2 года назад
You make a good point that Batman’s fighting style has taken a drastic change, but it makes sense within the context of the movie. As others have mentioned he’s early in the game and he wasn’t trained by the League of Shadows. This provides a fresh take with his fighting style that we haven’t seen before. You also mention in the hallway scene that Batman taking shots from an SMG to his armor is unrealistic, that’s fair, but the subsequent solution you suggest of jumping and dodging is even more of a stretch. Yes Batman is quick but he’s not quick enough to dodge gunfire in such a manner, especially in a hallway. That would push the movie away from its tone of being grounded in realism
@Neutral_Tired
@Neutral_Tired 2 года назад
@@mol7392 he doesn't necessarily need to be faster than the bullets, just faster than the people shooting him and scary enough that they don't think clearly enough to adjust their aim. In a short hallway it works wonders, over a longer distance he's gonna get shot.

I loved The Batman, but yeah it's not perfect by any means. Honestly it's not even as good as The Dark Knight to me, even though it far surpassed it in terms of visuals. Batman actually impacts the overall plot of the movie rather minimally. And I found it highly suspect that Penguin was doing an illicit drug deal with a dead body involved, shot at a cop, caused a massive pile-up and probably killed at least half a dozen people, and yet Batman and Gordon just...let him go. 🤨 Also I thought the narration wasn't used as well as it could have been. A "plan" doesn't need to be "a specific set of things that must happen exactly". If anything, a *good* plan is one that is malleable enough to roll with new developments. I have to imagine Joker's "plan" is more a set of loose objectives. Doesn't particularly care how he gets there, just that he does. Which is why the "dog chasing cars" thing might be a better analogy than people give it credit for.

I have issues with this movie too, but mine are a bit more technical, I don’t love it. I normally like your videos, so don’t take it the wrong way. But I don’t usually find super analytical reviewers like this enjoyable or interesting, they come of as BORING reviews to me. But that’s just my opinion tho 🤷‍♂️ don’t stop making videos 👍

I'm gonna ask you a question here bro as I think there's a lil bias going on you start off by suggesting that this is a film displaying the "Batman as the greatest detective" trope that's been missing since the 60s movie. then you go on to explain that he's basically not contributed anything to the movie outside of one thing. yet you still call it a success? Just a question here as its needed but... do you think maybe you're desperate for this to be something good because there's been so little good DC movies of late? If the premise cannot hold on inspection IS it a good movie?

For me the biggest flaw of this otherwise amazing film is sadly the finale. The new mayor, Bella Real is a puzzling addition if you stop and think about it. The film is all about mistrusting question marks, so why should I put my faith in someone whose motivations aren't elaborated on beyond what she shows to the world? But I'm not that invested in seeing Riddler's disciples stopped either, I just found out about them and it feels like they really wanted to end on an action scene versus letting the ending sit with you. But again, was still very happy with what we got as a whole and I'm looking forward to what's next.

I agree with you for the most part. I think they should've developed Bella Real a lil bit more in this movie. They did make her look like someone that truly cares about Gotham tho

These problems aren’t bringing down the film nor does it create any logical inconsistencies within the films writing. I still believe that there could’ve been more of an emphasis on Batman being the main detective, your reasoning for the film being “worse” is more based on your own subjective opinion. The movie is objectively great, a solid 8.

I don't think this movie is a masterpiece but I still do think that this is probably my favorite Batman film to date with TDK coming in 2nd. It is definitely one of the best superhero films I've ever seen and the best movie I've seen this year so far. When I rate films, I always start my rating off with my first impressions (usually the first 10 minutes) and this movie started off as a 10/10. Then I started watching it more and more and that rating slowly goes down. There are definitely problems but most of them are not major at all. My rating for the movie is somewhere between an 8.5 to a 9. Also yes, I agree with everything you said, this movie's reliance on coincidences to help our protagonist gets a bit distracting. But the same thing happened in TDK but luck was more on the antagonist's side. Edit: Batman never could've captured Riddler because he was playing Riddler's games. In the end, Riddler technically won. Instead of breaking Riddler's game, he followed along and suffered the consequences from it. He also solved every single riddle in the beginning and also in the funeral while the rest he needed some sort of help. My biggest gripe with the movie is definitely the officer in the end, him helping Batman this much makes Batman's small victory by saving the mayor feel unearned. Also, 3 conveniences in a 3 hour movie isn't THAT bad.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I loved it up until the reveal. I personally wish that the Riddler would've been some background character that had like one line or conversation exchange with Bruce, like if it were the guy at the funeral or he just had some exchange while the Riddler was casing the club (but not in Riddler attire obvi) I didn't really like that it was just some random guy that we had never met before.

there's some kind of book prequel that came out before the movie, you dont need it to understand the movie, but it shows how bruce becomes Batman, and some other characters to the point they're at, including riddler who was an orphan kid of many adopted by the Waynes into their mansion as an act of charity? thing he didnt enjoy at all, he despised all of it and the rich kid "has it all" Bruce Wayne, ofc their lives take far separate ways as shown in the book and movie.

I understand the issues but when it comes to plot convenience the Nolan trilogy is 1 big plots convince, Ras just happens to talk to bruce, bruce just decides to not kill that one guy and decides to kill all of the league of shadows instead, ras just happened to survive, Bruce decides that he’s not a killer, later he destroyed a parking lot and killed Ras by proxy, Bruce lied to the cops that he would save ratchel but saves Harvey Witch the cops could have done, so bane also just happens to be the son of Ras so I think people over look that at say the trilogy is over rated

@thefilmrookie3099

You missed the point at the simple conceptual level. The movie isn’t a mystery. It’s a detective story, which means it’s the characters solving the crimes, not the audience, we know it’s the riddler and that his plan involves killing political prisoners, that’s why they announced the casting of riddler and didn’t keep it a secret. Batman isn’t perfect, the point of this movie is that everyone In Gotham is human, if it was just Batman or Gordon solving everything, the world will feel dead and one sided, Martinez having a father that works in carpentry adds to the liveliness of the world, detectives have lives and applied it to their work if they are aware of it. These ‘coincidences’ are supposed to make Batman seem less capable, as the director has stated and is clearly shown, he isn’t the worlds greatest detective yet, making mistakes, he gets hit a lot in fights, he’s bold and brash, ending with him losing or getting injured. The carpentry thing didn’t need to be brought up earlier because it didn’t have any uses until the scene it’s needed. The cops talk is what makes Batman realise. Detectives, which he is, knows stuff. The Batman has flaws but this video feels lazy to me. This adds to the point, Batman was lucky, Batman does make mistakes, Batman makes glaring problems. But you forget that even Batman in the comics has people give him information that triggers an idea in his head. Just like Sherlock Holmes a lot of the time. Lucky Watson knew about blah blah because it helps here. Selina, sure you can say that is lazy. But it adds to that luck. But you did say you’ll let one go. So I won’t touch on the topic. The second one, I’ve seen the movie three times and I recall that Selina got the phone, not from the car, but KENZIE, it was on him. He was probably tasked to get into her phone so he can see what is on there. As for the body, sure I can see how that doesn’t make sense, if you just had the phone and heard her death that could work. But notice the green stuff around her mouth and her eyes, I think her body was used as a way to test their drops or some other drug. When he hit the bridge, the light broke his impact into the ceiling, plus his strong armour which can take shot gun blasts at point blank. It takes rewatches and an expectation to appreciate the film. You looked at it as a mystery which was the glaring flaw. You thought Batman in this film was going to be the worlds greatest detective, which he isn’t, I would argue he’s not even Batman yet. More a proto Batman. The first and last one are just world building and coincidences always occur in the world. ‘Oh but the story wouldn’t happen without it!’ That’s literally the point of a story, events occurred that if not timed right, would never happen. You could argue that in Batman begins that if Bruce’s parents didn’t leave early there wouldn’t be Batman. Star Wars a new hope is full of coincidences. Especially with the edition of the other movies. What are the odds that the child of the dark lord is given a message from his unknown sister, who is watched over by the master of his father. Just embrace it, stories are stories not real life. If the bus arrived at the wrong time, the jokers heist at the start of the dark knight wouldn’t have worked. What a coincidence that Rachel is dating ‘the white knight’ of Gotham, if she didn’t meet him out of how many people in the legal system, then Rachel would still be alive and The whole movie wouldn’t exist. Lucky Fox was working on sonar equipment when Batman needed to know where Lou is on the building. Brought up at Hong Kong. And Batman wouldn’t have found Joker either. That’s three for the dark knight. But not many people would argue coincidences as a flaw in the movie. Coincidences happen, that’s how movies are, the fact they only used it 3 times, I’d argue 2 times. Is pretty good. If Batman didn’t see Selina he would still be on Penguins case and likely would have figured everything out earlier when Anika is killed hours later. If they didn’t have the phone the bombs would have still gone off and batman would still stop the riddler when they are at the Gotham square gardens as the plan was still in affect. The bombs were timed. Same with with the carpentry, I think that’s the weakest argument, the bombs would have still gone off. Batman is aware that the riddler would likely be where everyone is being gathered up, and stop him there. They don’t impact the film, but add to it, like I said, if it was just Gordon and Batman, the world will seem emptier and like every other batman where the cops are just useless and just there. As for the relationship with Batman and the cops, I mean, we see directly that they don’t trust him and don’t want him around, they literally were fighting with him at the lockup after he was knocked out. It’s all visual language. I respect your opinion and I do feel I came out a little forceful, (rough day) but yeah, the movie has problems, the joker scene didn’t need to be there. The final fight from the close up shot gun blast to him cutting the electrical cord felt off to me in direction. Falcone and that aspect of the story could have had a bit more oomf on the story. But just like most great movies, they are just minor flaws and if they don’t distract or take away from the movie, then it doesn’t matter. Even with knowledge of some small issues I still give it a 10/10. That ranking may make you think I have bias, maybe, but simple put, this movie isn’t made for everyone in mind, it isn’t marvel. It has a target audience and it is bold in its narrative, your bound to find something that you might question, but typically, the more you like, makes you see the movie again, you pay attention and go with the flow, knowing what happens, things flow better and iffy choices become clear and you are glad it wasn’t changed.

This my theory according your problem about the phone issue pointing falcone's guilty evidence. The falcone's right hand, Penguin perhaps want to plot falcone to dethrone him. Also as you know that cop kenzie were slaved by falcone/penguin because he take a piece of renewal fund... perhaps kenzie kept that phone to frame falcone too. She's no one's minion, and she is involved in jewel theft, no drugs. There are some moral lines Selina won't cross, and anything to do with drugs is one of them.,
