Ok so the ending of The Batman has some major things going on with it.
We see the introduction of a classic character through Barry Keoghan, get the destruction of Gotham and also watch as Selina Kyle heads off to Bludhaven.
With Matt Reeves stating he'd love to create a trilogy, I thought we'd take a look at where we leave things off to theorise on what could be coming next. Full spoilers ahead so if you haven't had a chance to check it out then I highly recommend that you check out now. Riddle Me this, who loves a thumb drive...with a...a thumbs up on it...this guy...
We'll just skip the crap jokes and get into it but cheers for checking out the video.
Now the ending of the movie has the Riddler meeting a mysterious Arkham Inmate played by Barry Keoghan. There's been lots of evidence to say that this is actually the Joker including comments made by Matt Reeves and Barry's brother who got drunk a couple of months ago and posted about it on Facebook.
The Riddler and Joker have somewhat of a tenuous friendship in the comics and though they've worked together in the past, I think that going forward they'll actually become enemies. The Graphic Novel The War of Jokes and Riddles would definitely provide a basis for this and incase you don't know this is a year two story that was set after The Riddler had turned Gotham into a wasteland in the events of Dark City.
The Riddler actually flooded the entire city and this is pretty much what we see happen at the end of the movie. Shoutouts to Grace Randolph for also pointing out that we get the line 'hes spoken for' at the end of it which is something that Selina also gives lip service to in the movie.
Now Dark City was a New 52 story whereas War and Riddles was a Rebirth one but there were several nods to the former even though they may not strictly be the same continuity. That being said though, the timeframe is right to create something like this and I think they'll likely combine elements.
In the Long Halloween after the death of Falcone happened the entire landscape of crime in the city changed. Whereas Batman Year One and the year two stories dealt primarily with the mob, Carmine's death massively alterted things and we very much got the rise of the supervillain.
The power vaccuum that has now been created is the perfect point to have a war like this that has the super villains all fighting for dominance in the middle of Gotham.
However, I think the biggest influence will be the books Cataclysm, Road To No Man's Land and No Man's Land itself.

Matt Reeves actually did an IGN interview and confirms that it is the Joker and that there was also another scene that will be released where Batman goes to him for help trying to figure out the Riddler. Also that joker actually has a sickness where he's always smiling even if he doesn't want to which has people treat him horribly which in turn aides in him becoming the Joker. He says that at this point Batman had already stopped the Joker and locked him up but I guess not as the Joker but a regular person. At least that's how I understood it. Disregard this if you had this in your video 😅

Thanks for the cool content dude! Really hope that there's a full 10/ 12 year time jump to the 3rd movie if they're going to introduce that kid as a Robin. Looking at the age difference too, if the guy in the red hood at the start is being hinted to be Jason Todd, maybe they'll switch Dick Grayson and JT round or just have him unofficially assisting Batman in the next movie then killed by Joker. 🤷‍♂️ Going by the tone so far, I imagine alot will be different or combined in terms of character origins if they introduce a Robin into this trilogy.

Favorite aspect of this Batman was that walk. He doesn't run. He doesn't vanish or reappears like a ninja he walks with those heavy steps. There's a lot of weight behind those steps bc of all that gear. Boots are more than likely steel toe.

I think Robert Pattinson even said that he’d like to see the court of owls in a sequel. The court of owls comic run was the first introduction to batman I had back when I was about 7 and it terrified me. I love the court of owls so much and I hope that they are introduced

I got a theory about Joker’s riddle to Riddler; “The less of them you have, the more they're worth” It could be a Friend, but it could also be a reference to a playing card deck and in card games where the higher end cards are more valuable & in limited supply, especially the 2 *Wild Cards* - a *Joker*

That's what I guessed as well but when Riddler said friends I thought I was wrong. However Joker's laugh after that made it seem that Riddler's answer was not what he had in mind but it played into his plans of forming an alliance.

I really enjoyed how they showed the fear of looking into the shadows, kinda frozen in fear waiting to hear or see him. Also how powerful the bat singal was alone, greatly improved over the more recent iterations.

Matt reeves has said they filmed another scene with joker being interviewed by Batman in Arkham to help him profile riddler. It was cut from the final version of the movie but Matt reeves did state he plans on releasing the scene “really soon”

The Hush Easter eggs were the first ones that really stood out to me, Edward Elliot in the movie being the father of the Thomas Elliot aka Hush is the perfect set-up for the sequel's villain. In the comics, Tommy has an intense grudge against the Waynes and that could be incorporated in the sequel as him blaming them for his father's death and plotting his revenge against Bruce Wayne.

I like the Idea I'd Hush, but am wanting to see a Professor Pyg, Mad Hatter, Hugo Strange as these would fit in with the more grounded approach with this interpretation. Two-Face or Mr Freeze would too be a challenge to adapt but with huge payoff but the villain I'd love to see would be Jason Todd's Red Hood... If there's gonna be a Robin then I want Jason to be him as his character would play very well on Pattisnon's Batman as his morals and Ideals as the Red Hood or an angsty, unhinged and violent teen would resemble his original state as "Vengeance" Or directly juxtaposes him. The Joker could kill him or have "murdered" him sparking a rivalry when he's revived as he's been wronged leading to a Dark Victory, Hush storyline meets Under the Red Hood as Reeves likes to adapt multiple comics. My story would be Jason teams up with the riddler and Hush and reveals Batman's identity and his tactics and idealology leaving him a step behind or forcing him to become something his not ultimately proving Jason's point that's he's no better than the Crime he fights and the Red Hoods means are the only way forward. As he combats the crime in Gotham through violence and intimidation ultimately trying to be the biggest crime boss in Gotham getting Batman's attention and making him choose between Himself (Jason) or Joker seeing if he'd right his wrongs and Batman would come to the realisation of seeing how Red Hood is one of his sins Making the whole "Sins of the farther plot" become full circle.

I think a Quadrilogy would be the best bet tbh. To fully flesh it out you would need 6. 1-Penguin 2-Riddler 3-Court of Owls 4-Ra's Al Ghul 5-Bane 6-Joker But they skipped year one and thus the Penguin was a support to Riddler here (which I have no problem with as Riddler was AMAZING in this. That would mean they'd likely only do 5 but I can see them condensing either The Court and Ra's into one film (Ra's is behind the Court) or Bane and Ra's into one film (Bane is tryna take over the league of assassin's). Hence why I think a Quadrilogy is more likely. Sure there's Hush, Ivy, Mr Freeze and Scarecrow etc. but they either fit the role of support Villians or have already been meshed with another character (Hush being somewhat meshed with Riddler).

I hope the Joker is in Arkham, watching and pulling the strings from the shadows. He pushed the Riddler in the right direction, setting up the chaos that left Gotham in a dark place. He's doing this to test Batman. Batman's been out there for two years. He must be interested in who he is. So the Joker is throwing villains at Batman, to see if he's a worthy adversary. Then when the time is right, he breaks out of Arkham to finish off Batman and maybe take the crown of the clown prince of crime. I think the longer you keep the Joker in the shadows, the more hype it builds.

@@serwinzzalot9989 It's not said, but who's to say that the Joker didn't pick the Riddler and give him the information he needed to work out his plan. There's a deleted scene where Batman goes to the Joker to help him find out who the Riddler is. So it shows he's smart. There was a rumor that he's a former cop, so it's not out of the question that he learned about the corruption. So it's not out of the question that if he looked into it, he could've chosen the Riddler, knowing his story and figure out his psychological profile. Supposedly they're going to introduce Harley Quinn, so she could be feeding the Joker information.

The Joker (if he helped) would've know the Riddler was really smart and can work things out on his own, but if the Joker somehow was the one that put that one piece of information in front of The Riddler, knowing it would catch his eye and send him down the rabbit hole, that put the Joker in the position to have had a front row seat to what was about to happen. I'm probably wrong, just a theory. But I do like the idea of the Joker having been caught by Batman and he's helping to create villains to test him and also weakening the power of Gotham, before breaking out and claiming it for himself.

The thumb drive joke in the movie made me LOL. I liked Gotham because of the No Man's land use. I want to see the interconnected villains and underbelly of Gotham more than the previous kinda stand alone villains. It's dark and the Gothic style was beautiful. I think Eds line at the end, "the mask allows us to be ourselves" took care of those people upset that Bruce was missing. I think Bruce had lost Bruce.

Fun Fact: The kid at the train station with the half painted face actually plays Tim Drake in the DC show Titans. Apparently he filmed the train scenes way before Titans was on his radar, so it was purely a coincidence. That being said though, i still dont think he'd be the best choice for a Robin. As much as i've been dying for one to finally (and properly) be introduced in a Batman film, I have a feeling they'll be a new face we didnt get to see yet.

They are going to stretch the timeline wide after every movie. Gotham is flooded, how long you think that takes to fix. By the third film robin could be mid 20’s and close to nightwing if they time jump enough 15yrs old + 10 Pattinson in real life would be older after 6-7 years till part 3 comes out

I hope it's somebody who wasn't in this movie, and furthermore, I really hope they use Dick Grayson's origin as a circus acrobat. Especially since, in Batman, Alfred mentions his "days back in the circus," at one point, and it'd be really cool if the circus Alfred was part of was the Haly circus. They use that connection in the sequel to bring in Dick Grayson.

@@scrabdusanproductions2104 Bruce & Alfreds conversation is somewhat of a deep-cut easter egg that connects The Batman to famous spy novels. We all know Alfred was a very skilled military man, because of Alfred’s impressive skill set, it makes perfect sense that he would have worked as a spy. But, saying he spent time in “the Circus,” makes him a very specific kind of spy. To be clear this movie connects to John Le Carré’s spy novels. Now, this line flies right by, but “the Circus,” was the code name for a fictional version for the British Secret Service in the various novels written by John le Carré. To be clear “the Circus” as described in le Carré’s novels was not entirely real, and seeing as Alfred was a character in these novels, him referencing “the Circus” isn’t entirely real either, he didn’t actually work for the circus, it’s all British CIA code talk.

The way things ended in the movie gave me serious Arkham City vibes. The way the Reeves pulls from so many different bits and pieces, it could easily be a mix of the video game and other stories as well. Thank you so much for the videos, especially as you raise twins! Hoping for an update soon! Also, I think if Pattinson shows up in all the spin offs it will really add to the whole Arkham City adaptation vibe.

Yes sir! That's exactly what I thought during the film. Classic Batman. Pattinson is the definitive Batman. Batman is his now and he owned every scene he was in. Please keep Joker away as long as you can Matt. Let's bring in Freeze, The Court of Owls, and MadHatta maybe even bring in a new Scarecrow but he's been in Gotham as well as the Dark Knight trilogy. Keep up the good work Mr. Reeves, Rob Pat, Zoe, Jeffery Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell.

This was the first Batman movie I've seen in theaters and I absolutely loved it. The overall look of the film was beautiful and I really ended up liking this moody Batman. I really like how you pointed out all the connections to the comics. Also I can totally see that kid in the gang as a Robin

Did anyone else get major Court of Owls/Talon vibes with reference to El Rata Alada and during the scene with DA's mention of Gotham's Elite/Officials secretly controlling the city from the shadows/behind the scenes because he refuses to name the rat right before the bomb explodes at the funeral? Maybe The Riddler also knows about the Court of Owls? Maybe Thomas and Martha Wayne had a connection to the Court of Owls?

I look so much forward to see where all of this goes next. As for the new Joker, I’m really excited to see more of Barry Keoghan’s take on the character! He’s a great actor who can play creepy psychopaths really well, and I love how he looks in the movie. That said, I think it’s best to save him for the third movie or one of the spin-offs, so that Batman can face other villains who’ve never been established or redeemed, like Hush and Mr. Freeze. I can definitely see Robin be part of this universe. The actor who played Tim Drake in Titans is also in the movie, so that’s the obvious choice. But, maybe the mayor’s son could end up being Robin too. He kinda reminds me of Tim Drake, being raised in a wealthy environment and all.

Knowing what we already got... It is so exciting to speculate about the sequel... With SO MUCH freaking material available out there... So many comics he could use for inspirations... The ones you've suggested make perfect sense. I do like the orphan Robin idea from the movie... As it would allow the next one to be say 5 years forward or more so he's a bit older, and we have more villains in this world. So exciting!

He's a street kid so I think he'd very likely be Jason Todd. The Venom that Batman takes at the end could be a nod to a previous connection with Bane (maybe they worked together for Ra's idk lol). I say this because I doubt Alfred was Bruce's only Teacher.

This is arguably one of the best Batman movies to date. I'm sorry but Pattinson and Bale are better Dark Knights than Affleck. The Batman truly nailed exactly what the Dark Detective should be. And Zoe Kravitz was excellent as Catwoman.

The one and only part of the "I am vengeance" scene at the beginning is when, after the beatdown is over, everyone just gets up and runs off. It took the intensity right out of everything, made it feel like play acting. I would be really happy if there was a directors cut where the only change was cutting the camera 1 second before they get up.

The scene where Gordon tells Batman to punch him and he legs it through the station then all the cops flood the hallways and stairs after him. Batman freaking out at the top of the building and failing. What a brilliant movie. I’ve never been twice to see a movie in the cinema but I’m just tempted to go again

The film was a masterpiece and there is so much amazing source material to pull from for sequels and series. I’m hoping they will use GCPD to bring Harvey Dent into the picture. The Batman very conveniently left the police commissioner and DA positions vacant. Time for Gordon to move up and Harvey to move in. I definitely feel like Reeves planted many seed of storytelling for future installments in this universe he’s creating.

If there's gonna be a Robin then I want Jason to be him as his character would play very well on Pattisnon's Batman as his morals and Ideals as the Red Hood or an angsty, unhinged and violent teen would resemble his original state as "Vengeance" Or directly juxtaposes him. The Joker could kill him sparking a rivalry when he's revived as he's been wronged leading to a hush storyline meets under the Red Hood where he teams up with the riddler and Hush and reveals his identity and his tactics and ideology leaving him a step behind or forcing him to become something his not proving Jason's point that's he's no better than the Crime he fights and the Red Hodds means are the only way forward. As he combats the crime in Gotham through violence and intimidation ultimately trying to be the biggest crime boss in Gotham getting Batman's attention and making him choose between Himself (Jason) or Joker seeing if he'd right his wrongs and see how Red Hood is one of his sins Making the Sins of the farther plot become full circle.

Thanks for the video, and the theories! About the Robins, I think you got it reversed. I think the wayward "gang initiation" teenager in Act 1 will be the *Tim Drake* or *Dick Grayson* Robin, while the pre-teen orphan will be the *Jason Todd* Robin. Why? Well the former seemed to have compassion (he didn't want to needlessly assault an innocent person), while the former is an orphan and is (probably) very angry that his dad was murdered while the killer went free (albeit for a while). And is still breathing. I think the younger, sheltered kid of a briefly-corrupt-but-now-dead mayor is gonna have more *anger issues* . Think about it! And thanks again for the great content!

I'm surprised that you did not point this out... The criminal that you identified as a potential Robin is played by Jay Lycurgo and there is a VERY good reason why he gives off Robin-vibes: Jay plays Tim Drake on Titans and will become the 3rd Robin since on the show, Grayson is Nightwing and Jason Todd killed and revived to become Red Hood last season.
