This is Monk Filotheu Bălan's lecture from the conference: "On the Eighth Œcumenical Council: The Catholic Condemnation of the Filioque" that took place on March 14 - 16th, 2024 in Lake Guntersville, AL. The original title of his talk was: "The Historical Roots of the Acceptance of Heresy in the West."

Monk Filotheu Bălan was consecrated at the Sihăstria Monastery, under the supervision of Archimandrite Fathers Cleopa Ilie and Ioanichie Bălan, and from 1999 at the Petru Vodă Monastery, under Archimandrite Father Justin Pârvu. Between 1996-2024 he was engaged in the research of the Orthodox patristic heritage, especially that of the legacy of St. Paisie Velichkovsky, on two branches - theological and musical - with the blessing and support of the Metropolitanate of Moldavia and Bucovina. His research activity, spread throughout all the Romanian libraries, those of the Holy Mount Athos and of the world, has resulted in many writings, dozens of printed volumes, thousands of pages of unpublished musical scores, countless conferences and collaborations with many universities in the country and abroad.

There are numerous chant and liturgical manuscripts even after 1054 that do not have the filioque. There are a few notable ones before 1054 that do have it. It was by no means universal. My favorite is a liturgical manuscript from Fulda, a city of Charlemagne’s kingdom, has a 809 sacrementary that in the baptismal ritual has the symbol and low, no filioque.

That is simply because the Nicene Creed does not have "the son" in it. The Holy Spirit fors proceed from the Father and Son. It is in Scripture.

What was presented here was the existence of various forms of the Creed in the West, which no one denies and all Catholics already know. What was overlooked was that the filioque is not a contradiction to ex patre. Even today it is permissible to use the filioque in the creed or not, so long as the theology of the Ecumenical council of florence is accepted. The existence of creeds in the West around the late medieval era with or without does not indicate some form of resistance to the filioque any more than it does now, when the Eastern Catholics recite the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed without the addition of the filioque.

@Gigi-ho2qk so all of Europe ceased being Orthodox when Cardinal Humbert and Patriarch Cerularius excommunicated each other? How does that work? If you asked Cerularius he would've said the Latins had long ceased to be Orthodox.

@@kais.1684 I guess, you need a date but it is around those times that it happened progressively. Some documents like the forgery of the donation of Constantine shows that papacy was already going astray years before but that the true scission was done in 1054. Unfortunately, this claim of papal supremacy already existed in the 9th century…

Is God going to require a religious examination when we come to be judged before him on issues like this? There are 1 billion Catholics in an Apostolic Church who receive the Eucharist, and worship the Triune God. I find this so nerve racking because I am led to Orthodoxy but I have put so much time and effort into researching the topic. The majority of people do not have the time to do this and if you’re not lucky enough to be born Orthodox, what happens?

The problem lies in that the RCC professes a different God. The Orthodox Church does not recognise the Sacraments of the RCC and this includes the Eucharist. Also it’s not that hard to learn about Orthodoxy today especially as many works have been translated or are being translated into english. Visiting an Orthodox Church and talking to the priest can also help if you don’t have that much time or money. There are also tons of videos and podcasts about Orthodoxy. It’s not as if people don’t have the chance to learn about it but that most, including myself for the longest time, just don’t want to. As to what happens to people outside of the Church? We don’t know exactly. But don’t listen to me on this as I’m not qualified to talk about salvation so better look for a local Orthodox Church and ask the priest.

To say that the RCC in all their errors, which there are many, profess a different God is supreme arrogance. The people of the RCC love the triune God and most, like the Orthodox grew up in that Church. It’s not easy to abandon the faith you were raised in especially when disagreements like the filioque seem trivial on the surface. I have done my research and where I think Orthodoxy is the truth, I can not ignore the way the RCC has evangelized every continent on Earth. I believe the more you know, the more accountable you will be held.

@Gigi-ho2qkare you going to tell the Orthodox Christians in Moscow or the Orthodox Christians in Constantinople they are no longer Orthodox because of the decisions their Bishops made? They are in schism and don’t recognize eachother’s sacraments.

Respectfully, no one is born Orthodox or Christian for that matter. However, I prefer to remember St. Theophan the Recluse on the matter of what happens to the Heterodox. We leave these matters to the mercy of God. If someone is clear in their conscience concerning these matters or is truly unaware of such theological precisions then we have every reason to hope in God's mercy for them. BUT, as for you who have now become aware and your conscience is forming concerning such matters, then you must act on those spiritual promptings to ensure your salvation. Lord have mercy.

@@ortho-g9826 you’re arguing the born thing just to argue. You know I mean be born into an Orthodox household where you are baptized as an infant and raised in the Church. I agree with you on those who know something is heresy and continue to profess it.

The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son as Scripture proves. The Orthodox argument is the Creed should not have an insertion on "the son". In the union Council of Florence the Orthodox Christians of Byzantium accepted this. The old question should be if it is true or not. It is true

I allege that the Patriarch of Constantinople was assassinated by the Catholics. His death certainly looks fishy. Scripture doesn't prove the filioque, not even Rev. 22:1. David Erhan provides a response to that verse on his RU-vid channel.

@@mikaelrosing also.. Church Fathers had God's revelation that Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father only. RC Saints never had such revelations about this matter. Also because they were too much under the influence of fantasies and visions. Sadly. That doesn't mean that they were bad people. Just delusional. In Orthodoxy is prohibited to pray with imagination. And also we shouldn't believe visions and dreams.
