This video describes the battle for Guadalcanal that began on August
7, 1942, with the landing of the 1st Marine Division on the
Japanese-occupied island. It was the first offensive action against
the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific. The U.S. Navy, Marine and Army
pilots who defended the island called themselves the "Cactus Air
Force” because "Cactus" was the Allied codename for the island. The
Cactus Air Force consisted of F4F fighters, SBD dive bombers, and a
few Army P-39s. Museum curator and historian Gene Pfeffer presents the
story of the battle and the role that aviation played in it. See our
SBD flying for the crowd after the presentation!
