The Battle of Albuera (16 May 1811) was a battle during the Peninsular War. A mixed British, Spanish and Portuguese corps engaged elements of the French Armée du Midi (Army of the South) at the small Spanish village of Albuera, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the frontier fortress-town of Badajoz, Spain.
From October 1810, Marshal Masséna's French Army of Portugal had been tied down in an increasingly hopeless stand-off against Wellington's Allied forces, safely entrenched in and behind the Lines of Torres Vedras. Acting on Napoleon's orders, in early 1811 Marshal Soult led a French expedition from Andalusia into Extremadura in a bid to draw Allied forces away from the Lines and ease Masséna's plight. Napoleon's information was outdated and Soult's intervention came too late; starving and understrength, Masséna's army was already withdrawing to Spain. Soult was able to capture the strategically important fortress at Badajoz on the border between Spain and Portugal[12] from the Spanish, but was forced to return to Andalusia following Marshal Victor's defeat in March at the Battle of Barrosa. However, Soult left Badajoz strongly garrisoned. In April, following news of Masséna's complete withdrawal from Portugal, Wellington sent a powerful Anglo-Portuguese corps commanded by Sir William Beresford to retake the border town. The Allies drove most of the French from the surrounding area and began the siege of Badajoz.
Soult rapidly gathered a new army from the French forces in Andalusia and, joining with the troops retreating before Beresford, he marched to relieve the siege. With intelligence of another approaching force-a Spanish army under Gen. Joaquín Blake-he planned to turn Beresford's flank and interpose his army between the two. However, Soult was again acting on outdated information; unknown to the Marshal, the Spaniards had already linked up with the Anglo-Portuguese corps, and his 24,000 troops now faced a combined Allied army 35,000 strong.
The opposing armies met at the village of Albuera. Both sides suffered heavily in the ensuing struggle and the French finally withdrew on 18 May. Beresford's army was too battered and exhausted to pursue, but was able to resume the investment of Badajoz. Despite Soult's failure to relieve the town, the battle had little strategic effect on the war. Just one month later, in June 1811, the Allies were forced to abandon their siege by the approach of the reconstituted French Armies of Portugal and Andalusia. (From Wiki)

"There is no beating these troops, in spite of their generals. I always thought they were bad soldiers, now I am sure of it. I had turned their right, pierced their centre and everywhere victory was mine-but they did not know how to run!" -Marshal Soult, describing the British infantry after Albuera. During the battle, the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of foot would suffer terrible casualties of 422 out of 570 enlisted men, being fired on by canister shot and assaulted by the french infantry, yet would stand fast and hold their ground, earning them the nickname of “The Die Hards”, the first recorded use of the phrase.
@lahire4943
@lahire4943 Год назад
Sorry but Soult doesn't mention at any moment he's referring to the British infantry in this quote. He may very well refer to the Spanish or the Portuguese, or all of them. Only 25% of the allied army at Albuera was British.
@liamw6562
@liamw6562 Год назад
@@lahire4943 While true, Soult had fought and defeated the Spanish and Portuguese before, 25% js substantial but not a majority, so in all likelihood he referred to the British in particular, though who knows
@cbc4199
@cbc4199 Год назад
It's not clear Soult was referring to just the British, since the first attack was actually repulsed by the Spaniards, who "stood like stocks" as Wellington later said. The 57th's colonel William Inglis, when wounded and taken from the field, cried "Die hard 57th, die hard!" hence the nickname. They indeed took almost 90% casualties, highest among other high figures for other regiments. And as Beresford said, they did not give an inch and "died where they stood, all wounds to the front"
@lahire4943
@lahire4943 Год назад
@@liamw6562 Hence why he said "I always thought they were bad soldiers"
@liamw6562
@liamw6562 Год назад
@@lahire4943 possibly yes, France also thought badly of the English army as well up until the peninsular war. Then again I think it’s wise to think Soult refered to them as a collective, “these troops” rather than explicitly one nationality, so excuse my previous claim

I've not seen this yet but this was the most brural field battle for the British army during the peninsular war and would be one of the scenes were the Spanish army performed heroically facing the French even while sustaining freindly fire from behind and facing frenchcolums before them, since these were proper Spanish regulars in comparison to the poor trained volunteers armies which the French crushed in mass. Looking forward to this as usually

Battle of Albuera was great battle even for Poles! Polish lancers (which we could see in video, Lancers de la Vistule, Lancers of Vistula) were charging on british formations few times and were close to destroying them! Polish lancers meanwhile Spanish campaign were known as Los Diablos Polacos (Polish devils).

It looked chaotic because of the close shots but actually the French did the only thing they could: concentrate most stuff on a flank and try to break it quickly before the allies can reform - zoomed out it was less if a mosh pit and more rolling up the flank and not letting them reform. The French couldn't just play slow and line up as 3v4, had to use cav advantage. This is how the battle played out historically and what Soult tried, and the battle was a carnage but the Brits did win, they beat back Soult and defeated his strategic objective. Despite the even horrible casualties both sides, due to larger allied numbers and better French maneuvering (also like in this replay). Great vid!

Yoooo Apollo! I have the Napoleon table top game, its called Black Powder by Warlord Games, they also make a dope World War 2 table top game as well. Its a lot of fun and half of the fun is painting them and making them your own but be prepared for several hours of building and painting. If you want a board game that is awesome Napoleonic warfare I highly recommend Commands and Colors: Napoleonics by GMT. Its an excellent game and my friends and I have bought several expansions for it and its hands down one of my most favorite board games of all time. Its less of an investment and setup but still great table top fun. And if you like that game you can try out the medieval series, the Samurai Series, and the best part is all the battles in the Command and Colors series are entirely historical!

The French had one cavalry corps and two infantry corps in this battle. I was playing the right hand infantry corps, pushing near the town. Tried to keep the momentum going but eventually ran out of steam and got counter attacked by the British. After a good Start our lack of communication caused us to be defeated piecemeal in the second Half of the fight. Still was a lot of fun. Thanks for showcasing the battle! If you're interested in playing some battles with an emphasis on Aggression, hit me up. As for points: each house without a number equals one point. Oh and: mass charges are fine. Blobbing/unit stacking is prohibited.

if you kept the camera a little bit higher you wouldn't lose that much stuff. Your intention is obviously to show the brawl between obsolete 3d models..Not possible to watch the evolution of tactics and maneuvering which is the substance of Napoleonic battle.. I tried but never was able to see anything but sporadic meaningless close-ups of muskets firing. Watching muskets firing at my face without seeing the result of their volley is just hilarious..
