A talk about the Battle of Britain (1st filmed on the 80th Anniversary 2020 ), I consider some of the interesting facts and possible scenarios if Britain had failed in the titanic struggle against the Nazi Luftwaffe in the greatest aerial battle in the history or warfare.
WHAT IF...?
How different would the world look today if the Brits had failed to hold back the evil Nazi air armada?
What chance would Russia have had in Operation Barbarossa in 1941 if the Nazis had acquired the entire rescources of the British Empire to use for themselves against the Soviet Union?
What chance would the USA have had against the world's biggest (Royal) Navy in the hands of the Nazis on one flank and the Imperial Japanese Navy on the other?
I submit that the civilised world would have been DOOMED, and the world would have "been plunged into a new DARK AGE" as Churchill himself suggested...
Make no mistake, - the fate of the entire world rested on this Epoch-making confrontation in the blue skies above the pretty little English countryside in the summer of 1940.
(I also give some great recommendations of books and DVD's for further reading and entertainment on this fascinating historical subject).
NOTES:
A correction & a couple of omissions:
1) Sir Keith Park commanded 11 group, (not 12 group, as I accidentally said, -that was Lee Mallory, as stated earlier).
2) I meant to point out the limited German fighter range severely limited their dwell time over the English countryside, greatly reducing their effectiveness in protecting the bombers.
3) The British Empire was left virtually bankrupt by the cost of the war, the BoB likely being the single biggest factor in the cost.
4) The shoot-out between the Ju-88 bomber crew and the London Irish Rifles I alluded to is known as 'The Battle of Graveney Marsh', the last ground engagement involving a foreign force to take place on mainland Great Britain.
5) Miss Beatrice ('Tilly') Shilling was the lady who invented the Merlin engine carburettor fix, known as 'Miss Shilling's orifice' (Oooer!).
6) Adolf Galland (who had major issues with the Nazi party) had conflict with Herman Goering lasting the entire war, and in early 1945 Goering even had him placed under house arrest, Galland fearing he might even be sentenced to execution by the Luftwaffe leader after clashes about the conduct of the air war and the manner of use of the new Me262 Jet fighter squadrons (that Galland had led at the time). To learn more on this subject, read the book 'A HIGHER CALL' by Adam Makos.
7) Dr Stephen Bungay's book about the BoB is 'The Most Dangerous Enemy'.
8) The Free-French pilots were a group who joined the RAF that I couldn't remember but who also made a huge contribution to the battle.
9) My biggest omission was not to credit Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of fighter command for his brilliant and meticulously considered strategy.
10) Basil Stapleton was the other Spitfire ace with the handlebar moustache that I couldn't remember.

Your best presentation yet, and you are absolutely correct in making the call about the Battle of Britain. One consequence of the campaign that should also be acknowledged was that in the years that followed the Germans pumped extraordinary amounts of manpower and resources into their development of V-weapons so as to make up for the fact that they could not gain air superiority over the British Isles. The diversion of these resources to offensive weapons in a program which ultimately failed undoubtedly impacted their defensive initiatives (e.g. jets) and helped ensure that the Allied air forces would win the air war over the Reich.

Great topic, Peter. It is always a good time to talk about the importance of that Battle. I believe the war would be lost if Goering is succesful. Of course there was a might of Royal Navy, and crossing Channel is damn difficult thing. But if Hitler invade and conquere the Isles, had the acces to the British natural resources and Industrial power... Americans woudn't win the war on two Oceans. There wouldn't be Land Lease for Russia. Hitler knew the key role of the Isles an therefore England was right from the start a thorn in his side. In my country the knowledge of BoB is quite good, mainly due to the epic fights of two Polish fighter squadrons, but I must admit that there are few books that could show the enormous effort, great organization and logistical aspect of this battle. Supply chains, chain of command, way of guiding fighters - the whole system was extremely efficient and modern. Therefore, it became a model for post-war air defense systems. Now the sad part. With war abroad, I am very pleased that Britain is supporting Ukraine, which shows that the lesson of 1940 has been well learned. The British know what it means when cities are bombed. They also know that Chamberlain's policies didn't work in the 1930s, so why should they work now. What's really sad is that half of the US population still believes in isolationism. The Republican Party candidate worships putin, not understanding that the collapse of Ukraine will give China the green light to attack Taiwan and a domino effect may begin. Isolationism didn't work before World War II, why could it work now. And finally - I wouldn't be a good Polish pariot if I didn't give a link to a wonderful film about 303 squadron ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ptijNcDanVw.html

Another great video Peter and although I could probably have a few disagreements on your alternative history view I do get the greater point you are making. If people do not know their history then they cannot understand how we are where we are and moreover it’s difficult to ground yourself in your own life. It’s imperative that History is taught correctly and as accurately as possible in schools. I feel this is not the case and is robbing generations of a culture and a real sense of belonging in this nation. We MUST remember those who went before us and paid the ultimate sacrifice for us, not to do so is a dishonour to their memory. The Negative G thing was also overcome by not incurring Negative G in the first place. You can roll inverted and then dive, which is what they did when "peeling off" from a formation, so I'm sure the more experienced pilots did that. PS Don't forget that Gloster Gladiators took part in the BoB, as did some CR.42 Falcos. That must have been quite a sight.

My father was 14 years old in Isleworth in West London in 1940. His house had minor damage, broken windows, damaged roof tiles from bombs hitting nearby Hounslow. He joined the Royal navy in 1944 & went to the Pacific in 1945 on the destroyer HMS Cossack (R57). Transferred to the RNZ navy in 1947 as they were so short of crew. Retired from the RNZN in 1951 but had to return to the UK to be discharged & immigrated to NZ in 1952. I went with him when he returned to see his family for the 1st time in 1974, my Grandparents were still in the same house in Isleworth & they still had the remains of their dugout air raid shelter in their back yard.

I could comment on politics all day, but I will cut it short. I do not think that America would have entered the war even if Britain had fallen. Interesting thoughts. Len Deighton’s SS-GB throws up an interesting scenario of what may have happened. I disagree with your comment on the BofB crippling the British Empire. In my opinion it was the lend/lease agreement with the US that we were forced to pay back for many decades after the war. As we became allies I think that this should have been quashed in recognition of the defeat of a common enemy. Compared with the rubbish WW1 destroyers that we got from the US, the jet engine we gave them was worth a thousand fold. The wholesale pillaging of German goods and technology after the war was also hugely in America’s favour. The US clearly had the intention of financially weakening the British Empire after the war and they did it in spades. Despite being the only one of the Allies to fight for the duration of the war (on the right side Russia!) we’ve had little reparations, recognition or thanks from others like Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan and the woeful France (whose cities got away undamaged again) and Ireland (who were kept fed via our conveys despite the IRA and others spying for the German’s on convoy movements). Bitter? Like a warm pint of English beer I am! Ok, so a bit tongue in cheek, but you see where I’m coming from.

@alanmorris8783 Well said, Alan. Looking at what happened after the war, the Americans won the war not only in the Pacific but also in Europe over the Germans... and their allies, achieving total domination. How many brilliant British designs were not created thanks to the Americans - aviation is only one aspect of this domination. Unfortunately, the consequence of the "Americanization" of European armies is today's dependence on US supplies - which, if Trump wins, may lead to cutting off supplies and leaving Europe to be devoured by putin. Trump is already openly saying that Europe and Taiwan should pay America to protect their integrity.

I love the whole concept of these presentations - history told through models. I'd love to do something along these lines some day. The problem is, Peter does it so well I'm afraid my attempts would look very amateurish. As usual, there are a couple of points I think should be clarified. Beatrice "Tilly" Shilling was actually married, so she is usally referred to as Mrs Shilling. She was an employee of the RAE at Farnborough, not Rolls Royce. Having said that, there was a lot of crossover in staff between the RAE and airframe and aero-engine manufacturers. People who had learned the ropes at Farnborough often transferred over to one of the manufacturers. Sir Stanley Hooker is a good example. He worked on superchargers at the RAE and ended up working for both Rolls Royce and Bristol. The Wetherspoon's pub in Farnborough is called "The Tilly Shilling" after her. It has a lot of Spitfire themed motifs within. As well as photos and artwork, the door handles of thw pub are actually copies of the spade grips of a Spitfire - including having a gun button. In the film, Michael Caine's squadron moves to a small airstrip operated by the fictional South Downs Flying Club. I'm pretty sure it is based on the real situation where some Tangmere based aircraft were relocated to a satellite airfield set up only few miles away on the Goodwood estate (RAF Westhampnett). Although RAF Tangmere has long closed as an airfield, RAF Westhampnett still exists as Goodwood Aerodrome. I've quite a few of the books you have on display. Holland's book is good but it spends an AWFUL lot of time covering the Battle of France. That's good if you want to know in better detail what happened in May and June 1940 before the BoB commenced. In regards to the nationality of the pilots who flew with the RAF in the Battle of Britain, don't forget the Irish. In fact, the only surviving BoB fighter pilot is 105 year old John Hemmingway who is from Dublin and currently resides in a nursing home in his city of birth. I love the movie "Battle of Britain" and watch it at least once a year.

I might not know as much about the Battle of Britain as someone from... Britain, but over the years I've read a substantial amount of books and articles and watched quite a few films and documentaries. The Germans made many mistakes and the British not so much or got lucky. I'm not sure that in the case the Luftwaffe had reached air superiority, Operation Sea Lion would have been successful. The Kriegmarine wasn't as strong as the Royal Navy and there were almost no decent landing ships or barges. Most sources agree it would have been a disaster for the Germans. At best a stalemate. What the rest of the war would have looked like is speculation. It might have lasted a year longer. The RAF would need to be rebuilt etc. If the Germans kept making the same sort of mistakes, they might still loose the war, but differently. Oh well. We'll never know. Of course I've watched the famous 1969 Hamilton movie several times. Most of the scale models of the airplanes involved in the BoB that I've built were from Matchbox. The box art of that Heinkel He-111 kit looks very familiar. Thank you for this video, I learned a couple of new things 😊
