A talk about the Battle of Britain (1st filmed on the 80th Anniversary 2020 ), I consider some of the interesting facts and possible scenarios if Britain had failed in the titanic struggle against the Nazi Luftwaffe in the greatest aerial battle in the history or warfare.
WHAT IF...?
How different would the world look today if the Brits had failed to hold back the evil Nazi air armada?
What chance would Russia have had in Operation Barbarossa in 1941 if the Nazis had acquired the entire rescources of the British Empire to use for themselves against the Soviet Union?
What chance would the USA have had against the world's biggest (Royal) Navy in the hands of the Nazis on one flank and the Imperial Japanese Navy on the other?
I submit that the civilised world would have been DOOMED, and the world would have "been plunged into a new DARK AGE" as Churchill himself suggested...
Make no mistake, - the fate of the entire world rested on this Epoch-making confrontation in the blue skies above the pretty little English countryside in the summer of 1940.
(I also give some great recommendations of books and DVD's for further reading and entertainment on this fascinating historical subject).
NOTES:
A correction & a couple of omissions:
1) Sir Keith Park commanded 11 group, (not 12 group, as I accidentally said, -that was Lee Mallory, as stated earlier).
2) I meant to point out the limited German fighter range severely limited their dwell time over the English countryside, greatly reducing their effectiveness in protecting the bombers.
3) The British Empire was left virtually bankrupt by the cost of the war, the BoB likely being the single biggest factor in the cost.
4) The shoot-out between the Ju-88 bomber crew and the London Irish Rifles I alluded to is known as 'The Battle of Graveney Marsh', the last ground engagement involving a foreign force to take place on mainland Great Britain.
5) Miss Beatrice ('Tilly') Shilling was the lady who invented the Merlin engine carburettor fix, known as 'Miss Shilling's orifice' (Oooer!).
6) Adolf Galland (who had major issues with the Nazi party) had conflict with Herman Goering lasting the entire war, and in early 1945 Goering even had him placed under house arrest, Galland fearing he might even be sentenced to execution by the Luftwaffe leader after clashes about the conduct of the air war and the manner of use of the new Me262 Jet fighter squadrons (that Galland had led at the time). To learn more on this subject, read the book 'A HIGHER CALL' by Adam Makos.
7) Dr Stephen Bungay's book about the BoB is 'The Most Dangerous Enemy'.
8) The Free-French pilots were a group who joined the RAF that I couldn't remember but who also made a huge contribution to the battle.
9) My biggest omission was not to credit Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of fighter command for his brilliant and meticulously considered strategy.
10) Basil Stapleton was the other Spitfire ace with the handlebar moustache that I couldn't remember.
