The Battle of Carentan after D-Day was crucial for the linking of the Utah and Omaha Beach Bridgeheads.
However, without the capture of strategic locations by the 101st Airborne Division beforehand the link up would have been far harder.
The 501st PIR of the 101st Airborne were assigned the task of capturing the key crossing point over the Douve River - La Barquette Lock.
The fight for the lock would be key to the capture of Carentan...

Good storytelling as always. I have been at the locks riding on bicycle from Carentan to Utah beach, not knowing the story, basically stumbling upon it. There is a plaque on the South side and so I learned some of what happened then. Again, good storytelling, I look forward to the next video!

Thank you! It’s an incredible tale and one that needs more recognition as it’s often overlooked due to the excessive fame given to one company in the 506th (not the veterans fault but an odd fact of how everyone latched on to one show!)

Thank you! The story of the 501st is so overshadowed by the 506th and Band of Brothers phenomenon, and not that that story shouldn’t be told - it should but the other units that jumped into that part of France need remembering too and hopefully this helps a little to bring some attention to a great Regiment!

Damn, I hope to make it to France and Belgium someday. My grandfather was there with the 501st. Sadly, he passed before I was born. I've been infatuated with the 101st since Band of Brothers and learning he was in the 501st. I couldn't even fathom going what through what these young guys went through when I was their age. It honestly makes me sort of emotional. Lest we forget. Do You know any good resources I could use to learn about the 501st? ✌️♥️

For the 501st and 101st Airborne in General, any and every book you can buy autheored by Mark Bando, his website Trigger Time is also a must read. While not 501st PIR, the Ian Gardner series of books on the 3rd Battalion of the 506th are exceptional and again not 501st but the books by Don Burgett. I'm struggling to think if I have any 501st PIR specifc books in my collection but the above would be a great place to start!
