Introduction and Turn 1 for my playthrough of The Battle of Cross Keys from GMT Games' Death Valley, Battles for the Shenandoah. Ewell takes up strong positions above Mill Creek, while Fremont demonstrates his typical caution.
If you're interested in the battles of the Shenandoah Valley, I highly recommend checking out the website of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historical District: www.shenandoah...

Thank you so much for these videos. I am new to this system. I just bought Gringo and Death Valley because I figured I’d start with some smaller battles and learn the system. Gringo has some smaller battles, but I found out, that because the Mexican war battles were so unique, that there are a TON of special rules for each. So not the best game to start out with 😅 The battle of El Molina Del Rey is smaller and a lil more straight forward, the playbook even says it’s a good battle to start learning with. But I also got Death Valley along with its expansion. Watching the sequence of play with your videos over and over and reading the rule book over and over is helping me get started. Stiglr and Hexy have some good instructional videos too. Thank you again, hope you post more!

Are you playing with the Fremont Caution Rules? Ah, yes, you are. Carry on. :) I visited Cross Keys four or five years ago, when Death Valley was still being designed. I, too, went down that ravine in front of Ewell's position and marvelled at the folly of an attack up that slope. I also tried to get around to where the 8NY was decimated by was stymied by the iron fence of a property owner who owns a E-W swathe of land right in that area ... and he has a guard house and armed security on the far west end!! Swinging around further around the Union left, there is the area where the Confederates launched their "rabbit punch" attack. That has some nice signage, good sight lines ... and it is right on the periphery of someone's private property (not the property with the guard station), but they seem pretty laissez-faire about it. I was able to walk down a wooded slope, and found a bright green mill pond blocking passage any further into the field. Naturally, after leaving Cross Keys I went down to Port Republic (@6 miles SSE), and took in the sights there. Got some really good photos from the top of The Coaling position, and wandered over to the spot of the (then) Covered Bridge where Jackson effected his early morning escape from the Union cavalry raid.

You just like to see me panic and frantically flip through the rulebook don't you 😆 The battlefield is basically just down the road from my farm. I too followed the retreat path down the Port Republic Rd to town when I visited last week. I plan to head back down to take some pictures from The Coaling and maybe the bridges over the North and South Rivers if/when I get around to playing the Port Republic scenario.

Definitely check out my first battle of kernstown videos. In the heat of battle I mess up quite a few rules, but Stiglr comes in and corrects them all in the comments

Ewell couldn't have picked a better place to stand against the cautious Fremont!

Regarding moving the 12 OH artillery, note that this alone would not incur fatigue. Rule 17.22 on fatigue: “Activations that are solely undertaken by attached artillery, alone, do not count.”
