Yes sir, and it amazes me how much i used to hate history in school, but when i watch it like this its fascinating. I think the difference is Mr Kevin actually making it real and not just drilling names and dates. It also helps that he looks like a grizzled veteran who fought in the battle of Agincourt 😆 just kidding, Kev

They were noble and brave - and ended up all dead. In other battles there was no murder or revenge at the end. Remember the battle the year before when Simon's trroops were too honourable to attack the sleeping enemy? The other side had no such principle, and the ruthless side with no principles won.

I know this battlefield. As a ten to twelve year old we covered this period of History and we visited the battlefield fifty plus years ago, and I have made deliveries of ice cream to the nearby hotel many times in more recent years. As a thirteen year old we graduated to the history of the Napoleonic Wars ... Then I did Tudor History for O-level at fifteen. I love history. Thanks for your great films! Best wishes from George in Herefordshire.

@@thehistorysquad Aye! And watched your vid on it, and we ended up sharing some thoughts in the comments at the time! You films take me back to a happy time as a child, who adored history lessons. Never did very well in tests, because I had no ability to remember dates with great accuracy! One of Mrs Griffiith's lessons on the Plantagenets went differently one day. Must have been an anniversary, because on the blackboard on chalk letter a foot tall she had written WARSAW, and under it in much small cursive was written "saw war." Then we had the history of the Nazis and Soviets destroying the city for six years. That quietened us down. My first history lesson on the twentieth century. Mrs Griffith [called Miss Griff] was a great history teacher. best I ever had, and she taught us to read books from the school library as much as listen to her, and even ask questions as a result. She could always answer them and would even suggest further reading. This went far beyond any official syllabus, and it was not only me she stirred fervent interest in! She formed in me at least [in my class year] a lasting interest in history - all history [except Ancient History, which remained mysterious to me until much later]. A great and inspirational teacher, and a very kind human, though she could be ferociously strict in the old school way if someone pushed her too far. Thanks for you lovely films. Like retreading and consolidating an interest of more than fifty years. Thanks and best wishes from George

I remember when I lived in Leamington I drove past evesham and my dad said they had their own “language” and it was so interesting to me as a kid. And the towns architecture was so intriguing to me the buildings looked so old and just like a medieval tale setting. We had nothing like this in America and it was a very culturally enriching experience for me. I wish I got to explore the area in more depth.

My home town is Lewes. When as a youngster my grandfather - who was deeply into local history - gave me a detailed account of The Battle of Lewes, and Simon de Montfort. The landscape of the South Downs appearing to be a deciding factor of the outcome. A pity you did (could) not display this on your very good account of the battle. Less than a year later of my grandfather's story, whilst laying out foundations for housing, a skeleton was discovered the opposite side of Lewes with a large dagger through the ribs. It was deemed certain it came from the Battle of Lewes - most likely from the fleeing flank of the Kings army. You sir have brought fond memories to an old man!

LOVE the Cockney matter-of-fact descriptions & assurance from Kevin Hicks that a sword thrust through the eyelet “might just do the trick!” It’s very Scotland Yard, really. I’m sure that’s how they worked out all matters to do with “causes of death,” just like regular business stuff, down through the ages. So comforting, somehow, that kind of practicality, but mannerably. 🤭🙃😊 Lots of interest in British monarchies, lately!! Particularly, the olde medieval age of chivalry, with all its weird, oddly English customs and notions-unchivalrous to launch a sneak attack on a sleeping battalion. But dismemberment of the foe with his organ & testicles displayed, well, the ladies are welcome, too!! 😳🙄😱 It’s a lovely battle module & so’s the narrative. I’m sure both de Montfort & Edward Longshanks appreciate the momentos!! Henry III, however, was just plain briefly lucky. 🍀🤴🏻🇬🇧🍀

One of the most impressive fighters at the Battle of Lewes was Philip Basset. He refused to yield while he could still stand, and the time he was brought down he had taken twenty separate wounds. He recovered, and did the whole country a great favour by helping to negotiate a peace treaty which was fair to all. At the time of Lewes he was in his mid seventies. De Montfort, incidentally, was recovering from a broken leg.

@@user-eg5fr3xl6m Leonidas was in his 60's when he died, I think that we forget how much more physical than us, people of the past were. Lewes in East Sussex is only a few miles from me and my understanding is that the King had maybe 10,000 men there but de Montfort’s army was only half that, so he needed to do something to even up the odds. His army was encamped round the village of Fletching about 10 miles north of Lewes but rather than advancing directly south to confront the king, instead they set off on a night-time march to the south-west, reaching the top of the Downs some miles from Lewes, where the troops & cavalry could be marshalled unobserved. Then they advanced and by first light had positioned themselves on the hills looking down onto the town. There was complete pandemonium in Lewes when, suddenly, thousands of armed men were seen massed along the skyline, the king and his army being taken totally by surprise. Which, clearly, was a factor in him losing the battle.

I absolutely love that you go to the lengths you do with the figurines and explain it in such great detail while also giving us a great visual of what happened! Very unique way to go about teaching history and, frankly, quite welcomed! ❤

Absolutely love the channel and the fascinating content! Have you looked at the ballistic dummies you can get, would be amazing to see you do a video using period weapons and the damage they can inflict.
