In 1242, Novgorod faced a Mongol threat from the east. But in the west, crusaders of the Livonian Order aimed to expand their influence. On a cold April morning, the armies of Alexander Nevsky, prince of Novgorod, and Hermann von Dorpat, the commander of the crusdaer knights, met at the frozen lake Peipus.

I've seen all sorts of videos on this battle, but never with your beautiful maps and sultry voice, so here we are!

YES! Finally some more classic battles, this is probably the best version of this one I've seen yet. I did get a bit confused at the Teutonic units cuz they looked like infantry but then I noticed the crosses. Great video, keep it up!

Some great work here, thanks. Have heard of the battle (thank you Eisenstein and Prokofiev), but knew quite little about it. Especially like the way you cover the the background leading up to the battle, and the wider Eurasian wars/politics.

Thank you for this. Not sure it's the right niche but for anyone utterly obsessed with Medieval Norther and Eastern European warfare (battle tactics, historical units, army organization, arms & armor) I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series. Keep up with the amazing work

Привет из России! Как говаривал Александр Невский: "Мы всякому рады, кто к нам с добром явится. Но кто к нам с мечом придёт - тот от меча и погибнет! На том стояла, стоит и будет стоять Русская Земля!"

In Russian the initial K before a consonant is pronounced. It is KNYAZ not NYAZ.

In the 1938 movie . It displayed the Teutonic knights collapsing through the ice . Probably a myth . And unlikely with the onset of the freezing cold .

Exciting video except that estimates of the size of the Livonia order army differ and reach up to 5-7 thousand .

This battle didn't take place in the winter and there was no ice involved if I remember correctly, for some reason everyone seems to take this version of the events as facts.

German nationalists of the last 100 years: The Teutonic Order was a bastion of civilization and strength, undefeated but forced to give up their rightful German land in the Baltics Teutonic Order: Killed a bunch of native tribes but then lost to Novgorod, lost at Grunwald, continued to be the punching bag of Poland for 100 years before secularizing into the Duchy of Prussia, only then turning its luck around and eventually becoming the Kingdom of Prussia and unifying Germany... only to fail returning German rule to the Baltics in 1918-19. Wouldn't it just be better to circlejerk about Prussia and the German Empire only and forget the Teutonic Order that just got its ass kicked repeatedly by its neighbors? I guess they just can't forget about muh Deutsch-Baltikum
