The last great carrier battle of World War II, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, is described in this video of a Museum presentation. It was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history, involving 24 carriers deploying roughly 1,350 carrier-based planes. When it was over, Japan had lost its ability to conduct large-scale offensive carrier actions. The victory was primarily due to highly trained American pilots with superior tactics and greater numbers. The video includes a ground demonstration of the Museum's Brewster F3A Corsair fighter. I'm an Englishman fascinated by the war in the Pacific. This is an excellent presentation. Glad to have discovered your great channel. Thanks.

My uncle Robert was a radioman/gunner on a Helldiver and was KIA in this battle. The telegram said his plane was attacked by an enemy fighter and was last seen smoking and going down. On a personal note, I think I saw your Corsair before it was recovered. I was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point back on late 80’s as crash crew and we got to go up in the search and rescue helo. We flew around the area and I remember looking down into this field and seeing the partial fuselage of a Corsair. Having been raised on Baa Baa Blacksheep, I recognized it immediately. I’m glad they recovered it.

Speaker was excellent. I watch a fair number of WWII presentations here on youtube, many by academics and many by dedicated writers. This person, not identified above unfortunately, is one of the most knowledgeable and natural. Also has the bearing of someone who's been in command.

Great presentation. I suppose I am in the "Spruance was right" camp as a matter of opinion. Being that he was at heart a surface officer, who once commanded a cruiser squadron, I think he was likely thinking that the Japanese might have used the aggressiveness of Mitscher to draw TF 58 away from Saipan, allowing a fast surface force to attempt to attack the invasion force off Saipan. This did occur during the Battle of Leyte Gulf when Admiral Halsey did do so with his Carrier TF which allowed the Japanese surface ships to engage our escort carriers defending the invasion fleet and almost getting through to the landing beaches.

Spruance's refusal to let the rehabilitated Mitchner off his chain migh also have anticipated the potentially bad things that could, and did, happen to Halsey at Leyte Gulf.

Spruance was right because if had stayed close to Gaum Task Force would have been hit by the planes from Gaum flying back to carriers by staying close to Guam they hit the surviving strike plane landing Guam

I always wondered why the planes used in Atlantic and Pacific were not the same... and which one was better. GOD Bless Veterans...
