Actually, the arrival of British re-enforcements was several days away. Had Langsdorf got underway with all his men, he had a fighting chance. The British had deceived the Germans into thinking the re-enforcements were already on hand and waiting. This was not so. In addition, the British had reversed their call for Uruguay to expel the Graf Spee. Instead insisting that under international law, a combatant had to give neutral non-combatant ships a 24 hour head start. The British then asked for any shipping that was departing to be held up in such a way that the Graf Spee could not leave for as long as possible. Langsdorf ascertained this ploy but he was also deceived in to thinking a large British fleet awaited his departure. Hence the decision to scuttle his ship and save his crew.

@@leeshackelford7517 the British were just as bad off. They had extensive battle damage, low ammo etc. all the same problems the Spee had except the British had MUCH worse ships and the Graffiti Spee didn’t have to sink the British, just escape to Rio for further repairs. Had the ship made a run for it there is a very good chance it could have made it to Rio or met up with its supply ship and make it back to Germany. The supply ship ended up being able to flee back to Norway in history. How much further would it have made it if it had its pocket battleship with it?

Like many of a certain age, I first learned of this from the classic British war film, often screened on TV on bank holiday weekends. Even in the obviously pro-British POV movie, Langsdorff was clearly depicted as an honourable man, a sailor serving his country, not a Nazi, and with a real commanding officer's sense of duty of care to those serving under him, even to his own detriment

There are a couple of things here. Yes the heavy forces mentioned had not arrived, only the Cumberland, but even then the Graf Spee would have had issues with the three cruisers. I have always thought that the Graf Spee was not particularly well managed during this battle. She should have used the 11 inch guns to completely disable the Exeter first and then turned on the light cruisers. She only had a top speed of 28 knots so she was not going to outrun them. Simon mentions High Explosive versus Armour Piercing shells. The GS was to engage in commerce raiding so would have mainly been equipped with HE shells. Its no good shooting AP at merchant ships who have hulls made out of 12/14 mm plate - they would go straight through the vessel and not cause much damage. The big issue was an 8 inch shell from the Exeter had exploded in the purifier flat just below the funnels meaning she could not produce fuel for the engines from the crude oil on board. As such she wasn't going anywhere.
@hansulrichboning8551
@hansulrichboning8551 2 года назад
Graf Spee was to slow to outrun british battlecruisers(Hood,Repulse,Renown) and french light battleships. I think Langsdorff knew that he sooner or later would be intercepted by superior forces.
@lightravenn
@lightravenn 2 года назад
He didn't know about the cruisers, he fell in the trap of them, to have a better chance for him he should have stayed at maximum range outside of the range of the cruisers. But, that's not how story unfolded, by the time he knew he was already deep inside, and he did focus on the Heavy Cruiser, but when he tried to finish it the two light cruisers blocked the chance to sink it, having to order the guns to face the Leander Light cruisers. And by this point he already lost the range finder of the main guns, a lot of ammunition, with many wounded. When he is catched by the cruisers he already lost, they can outrun him, tail him, and the entire mission was to raid commerce, not to die fighting a task force.
@TallDude73
@TallDude73 2 года назад
Wikipedia has a different story of the tail-end of the battle. Captain Langsdorff erroneously thought there was a sizable force waiting for him outside Montevideo: "Convinced by false reports of superior British naval forces gathering", he scuttled the ship without fighting just the same two cruisers which had followed him to Uruguay. The ships listed at 14:47 weren't actually there.
@resileaf9501
@resileaf9501 2 года назад
At the same time, the damage the Graf Spee suffered was probably too much to make it capable of reaching safe port in time even if reinforcements hadn't arrived yet. Scuttling it was probably the best choice Langsdorff had to keep his men from dying pointlessly.
@MaxwellAerialPhotography
@MaxwellAerialPhotography 2 года назад
That is correct. British naval intelligence engaged a plan to convince the Graf Spee crew that a Royal Navy Battlecruiser and Aircraft Carrier were within a days sailing of Montevideo, by buying up enough fuel and provisions to resupply both ships.
@DidMyGrandfatherMakeThis
@DidMyGrandfatherMakeThis 2 года назад
Also, British intelligence knew that there was no reinforcements coming to Ajax, Achilles and Exeter and after pushing for immediate departure invoked an unknown law of 24 sailing for belligerent vessels and made all ships sail as they could from the harbour under British, French, polish and Norwegian flags to try and keep the Graff Spee in harbour until they had enough vessels to take her on it. At the same time trying to convince everyone they were already there. It was tactics on a brass balls level.

Reinforcements had arrived in the form of HMS Cumberland. Largest and most powerful of Harwood's squadron she was armed with eight 8 inch guns as apposed to the six on board the rather small Exeter. For point of reference light cruisers of the Town class were larger than Exeter but smaller than the majority heavy cruisers like Cumberland. Even without the fleet that the radio had reported, Graf Spee would have been sunk if she had come out to fight.

HMS Achilles was the first warship to fly the NZ Ensign in battle! Achilles later became the flagship of the Royal NZ Navy on its formation from the NZ Division of the RN in 1941 - she served along with HMNZS Gambia and HMNZS Leander as a NZ Squadron in the Pacific. After service with the Indian Navy she was scrapped and her Forward turret and Director Tower now reside at the NZ Navy's HQ Base Devonport, Auckland, NZ.

And, to this day, there is a memorial at Achilles Point, St Heliers, Auckland, which I have visited many times. We schoolboys in the early sixties were also given a shell by shell account of the battle by a mid-level officer, who was right there on the Achilles. One thing they always had to do pre-dawn was rise in total silence and blackness and go to full battle stations. Ship borne radar was still a year or two in the future, so they had to be ready for a pitch battle if the rising sun revealed and enemy vessel.

Yeah calling it a superior force feels inaccurate. The two light cruisers were shot to hell, similarly damaged as the Gaff Spee (but without 72 hours of port repairs) there was the Cumberland which was fresh but old. The Spee likely didn’t have the ammo to sink all 3 ships but that wouldn’t be its objective, it’s objective would be escape to Rio or meeting up with its supply ship for food, water and fuel for an escape to Germany. Would it have succeeded? We’ll never know.

Basically, the ambassador wanted the Graf Spee to be forced out of Montevideo within 24/48 hours as per the rules of war but was advised there wasn’t yet the naval strength in the area to confirm the destruction of Graf Spee. In order to buy time and save face diplomatically, the British then organised a ship flying a flag of a country at war with Germany to leave Montevideo every day until the naval strength was sufficient as under international law, the warship had to wait at least 24 hours after the departure of an enemy vessel in order that it might escape.

With the rate of fire advantage and better armour and fire control if it had come across Cumberland and not the diminutive Exeter Graff Spee would have been in for a world of hurt the Town class cruiser Sheffield with its 12 6-inch guns tore Graff Spees sister ship apart and put her out of action for the rest of the war

There are an awful lot of little errors in this video, incorrect pronunciation of the names is annoying but inconsequential. However at 6:15, when listing Harwood's ships, you seriously showed a picture of the WW1 dreadnought HMS Ajax, instead of the Leander class cruiser that was actually present? How did such a major slip get through?

To be pedantic but fair at the time HMS Achilles was a British ship **with just over half the crew Kiwis** [correction] only 2yrs later becoming a Kiwi ship. A "knot" equals 1 nautical mile/hr(1.15mph, 1.85kmph). Exeter had 6 main guns, not 16.
@prof_kaos9341
@prof_kaos9341 2 года назад
FYI as i checked the stats, even 3 on 1 Graf Spee had the advantage. The 2 light cruisers had at best 25mm armour, 8x 152mm guns firing a 51kg shell 24km, Exeter had up to 75mm armour 6x 203mm guns firing a 115kg shell 26km. Graf Spee had up to 140mm armour, 6x 280mm guns firing 300kg shells 36km, its secondary armament equalled a light cruiser, 8x 152mm.

FYI: 2. The story of the supply vessel Altmark bears mention. Returning to Germany going north of Scotland and then down Norway's coast where Norway refused to check it for prisoners. The British boarded it in Norwegian waters to release its prisoners Norway said weren't there. This hastened the Nazi invasion of Norway, who arrived just a few days before the Britain's own bungled "liberation," making Norway German. This led directly to Chamberlain's resignation and Churchill becoming Prime Minister. A huge historical outcome

Achilles commissioned for New Zealand at Chatham on 31 March 1936, departing Sheerness on 22 April. After calling at Spithead to embark the Walrus aircraft, the ship sailed 26 April for New Zealand. Nine weeks were spent with the Home Feet at Gibraltar before Achilles sailed on 1 July via Jamaica, Panama and various small mid-Pacific islands before arriving at Auckland on 6 September 1936.

@@terryharris1291my mistake, a frustrating error. I should've checked that too but i got side tracked checking other stats. Years ago I went to a talk on the engagement and asked about the ship being HMS then HMNZS & was told there were only a few Kiwis onboard during this action, most manning one turret (A?). He said there were only a few dozen Kiwis on board in 1939.

My grandfather was on the Exeter in the comms room directly u der turret b. Turret b sustained a direct hit, and while shit got very real, my grandfather was ok, and went on to.meet my grandmother in the falklands while the ship was being repaired. Some years later, they moved to NZ and never looked back. So I guess i owe my very kiwi life to this battle, and to the germans for underestimating the armour on Exeter. I'd wager most kiwis don't know about the role Achilles played early on in the war. But I do, and the dual connection i have makes be a bit misty eyed at times.

Number of guns tends to be less important than the calibre. Graf Spee's 6 x 11" out ranged and out punched the largest guns of the Exeter with the 6 x 8" guns. The 6" guns of Ajax and Achillies were extremely out classed - although Graf Spee also had 8 x 5.9" guns as her secondary armament. She was a very formidable opponent. Langsdorf was a decent and honourable captain who was far too good for the Nazi party he sadly represented.

Individually, Graf Spee outmatched any of its opponents, but it was a 3v1 fight. Even if Ajax and Achilles couldn't penetrate its armour, they could unleash hell on its upperworks. Exeter could and did penetrate Graf Spee's armour. In 1939, there wasn't a cruiser anywhere in the world that could hope to win against 3v1 odds. Also, a correction: Graf Spee only had a maximum speed of 28 knots due to compromises in its design. All five British and French battlecruisers (Hood, Renown, Repulse, Dunkerque and Strasbourg) were faster at 30 knots or more.

i think this video misses the whole point , the British intially wanted the Graff spee out of Montevideo asap, but as reinforcements where 1000's of miles away, the British then wanted the Spee to remain in port, and to achieve this they sent out Allied merchant ships every 24hrs which the Germans then had to give the Merchants a 24 hour head start. So this effectively kept the Spee in port. This was to allow time for reinforcements, when the Spee went out on the 17th ,Force H was at least 2 days away
