Hello, welcome to The AceDestroyer and welcome to the fifth and final part of the Narva 1944 series. This part will be all about the battles for the Tannenberg line. In this episode we will see how the 3. SS Panzer Corps with all its volunteer units managed to defend the Tannenberg defensive line in some of the most vicious combat of the Second World War. [Handle this book with great care! Filled with SS Bias, but it gives the reader a good overview of the dispositions of the units involved. It also gives a brief overview of the fighting, but as mentioned, filled with SS bias.

All WW2 footage come from ‘Die Deutsche Wochenschau’ which has largely been banned on RU-vid. The ones used in this video are: No. 725 (July 27, 1944), No. 726 (August 3, 1944), No. 727 (August 10, 1944), No. 729 (August 23, 1944) and 733 (September 21, 1944) Also, ‘Die Deutsche Wochenschau ca. 1943 - 1944’ and ‘WWII Soviets defeat Germans at Vitebsk’ has been used as footage.
Pictures are from Wikipedia and the excellent Traces of War website.

It needs to be said that the heroic actions of the defenders allowed about 100 000 Estonian civilians to escape from the commies to the West, and and helped secure Finland's southern front, allowing Finland to emerge from the war as independent nation.

The trenches are still there? I looked over the hills and surrounding area on google earth but couldn't see any obvious signs of ww2 battle like you can some places.

@@stekarknugen9258 You definitely can see them on Google earth take a good look, north of the Tallin-Narva road, and I just checked if they were visible! When you walk around the Kriegs denkmal you still see them, in the surrounding forests. I have been standing in them, in different places mentioned in the video.

@@jasonharry645 it is always an impressive sight and makes you wonder what people went through. I visit battlefields and always have the same, whether it is Normandy, the Ardennes, Arnhem, Ypres, Verdun, where ever. You read about it and at that moment you are standing in the actual fighting positions so you know what happened and now you stand where it all happened.

It's kinda was, just that historian and the general public mostly only care about the famous battles like Stalingrad and Normandy. Can recommend ''The Courland Pocket 1944-45 FULL BATTLESTORM History Documentary '' by TIK here on youtube where he cover this battle in this video and what happend after in great detail. nearly 7 hour of entertainment.

Perhaps, "entertainment" might not actually be an entirely appropriate word, to describe 7 hours of one's Lifetime spent pondering the intricate recorded details of how dozens, (of) hundreds, (of) thousands of individuals went about hunting and ambushing and killing and grilling each other...; for being "The Enemy" (Any Me...?), as defined by their wearing of a different Uniform, and thus being Strangers (members of a designated and proscribed Ethnocentric Out-Group)....? Might not, "contemplation" or "pondering", or "pontification", or "education", or "history", or even "illumination"... be a better choice ? The idea of studying such Human Carnage as "entertainment", for the fun of it...., is pretty close to being on a level of pulling the Wings off Blowflies or burning Ants with a Magnifying Glass..., kinda thing. Some fascinations are better avoided, perhaps....(?). Just(ifiably ?) sayin', Take it easy, Stay safe... ;-p Ciao !

Wonderful footage again. I sure havent seen it before. I always like to see Shermans on the Ostfront, but it's rare. You can bet it's most always taken by a German camera. The only cameras the Soviets would have had were from the propaganda ministry. And they werent about to shoot film of allied lend-lease vehicles! -- This series has given me a deeper understanding of how difficult it can be to hold a far-flank. Even when it's anchored on a sea. Thankyou for your work.

Another amazing movie. I can not imagine how much time the preparation and animation of the footage may take, Ace. Being so detailed exceeds all expectations. Fantastic ! Mentioning so small details like someone got a schrapnel in his head, or another make a suicide after being severly wounded makes all the story very realistic. And dramatic. It is impressive how efficient the anti-bolshevik coalition of European nations was, how brave their sons were and how well they have fought. Pity that the 10.000 for 170.000 ratio could not be managed on other fronts also. We would not live in such a stupid and extreme world now.

@Bernard de Fontaines you are right...up to a certain level. By the time of the Tannenberg battle, the war was already lost for the Germans. Yet still fresh volunteers kept coming in, knowing very well that they bought a one way ticket. They went in hoping to stop a steamroller, these guys were far from the conquering ideals of 1941. You can compare it with the International Brigades in the Spainisch Civil War, who still went over the Pyrenees and into battle in 1939, even if they knew the cause was lost, it was idealism and stupid bravery. For us in 2020 a bit difficult to comprehend either way....but in their days...they thought it was the right thing to do. Very difficult for us...from our time and environment ... to look at that era and judge either side. I do not think both of us would have liked to live under Stalinistic rule either. But I appreciate and recognise the point you are making.

Great video! My grandmother fled Vaivara village just before the battles started. She was a small child at the time. Her family home was used as the base of operations by the Germans and all the villages you see on these maps were completely razed to the ground by Soviet artillery. Several of the village names are misspelt in this video though. Not that it changes anything in the story, but i thought id mention it. I guess that might not be the video creators fault though, but the source material itself might be flawed.

@Dave Ad Heinz Reinefarth, 26 December 1903 - 7 May 1979) was a German SS commander during World War II and government official in West Germany after the war. During the Warsaw Uprising of August 1944 his troops committed numerous atrocities. After the war Reinefarth became the mayor of the town of Westerland, on the isle of Sylt, and member of the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag. Polish demands for extradition were never accepted, nor was Reinefarth ever convicted of any war crime.In two days, the units of Reinefarth and SS-Oberführer Oskar Dirlewanger murdered approximately 60,000 civilian inhabitants of Warsaw in what is known as the Wola Massacre. In one of his reports to the commander of the German 9th Army Reinefarth stated that "we have more prisoners than ammunition to kill them".[1] After securing the Wola area, his troops took part in heavy fighting against the Armia Krajowa in the Old Town. In September, his forces were transferred to attack the boroughs of Powiśle and Czerniaków, where they committed further atrocities, including killing of POWs and wounded found in military hospitals. In all 150,000-200,000 Polish civilians were killed during the uprising. For his actions during the Warsaw Uprising Reinefarth was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 30 September 1944.

I don’t think the west was a walk in the park, the level of artillery was higher and proximity shells exploding overhead with no air cover would of been evil History is history and I feel it was a waste of life and opportunity, a terrible time in history Was there ever a time then and since such great advances in technology were put to a wrong use ?

@The AceDestroyer Could you please do videos on the fighting in/around Kharkov in 1943. The third and fourth battles have some incredible accounts from the units around there on both sides. I feel theres alot of good footage of the Third battle from Deutsch Wochenschau. Ive got some footage from both Battles and even managed to ID some of the units and people in the footage.

4:44 At the same time the ОПАБ (The Machine guns and artillery batallion) crossed the river in Hungerburg and liberated the Hungerburg in 25th of July 1944, meeting no resistance at all and advanced to the defence line in Meriküla. At the night of 24 and 25th of July several churches (St. Vladimir church on the river shore), the houses (for example - the villa Capriccio) and the Kurhaus in Hungerburg were destroyed and demolished by the retreating German forces. At the same time the towns and castle defences in Narva were in fire and, as we read in the documents, a lot of explosions happened during the retreat of German forces from the Narva. There are still some places in Narva caste and bastions, which has the storages of explosives left.

Could you do a video one day about the battle of Hasselmann and Kaprolat, two nearby heights in Karelia, that saw heavy action in late June 1944? Where the 190 men strong "SS Ski Jäger Battalion "Norge" was nearly annihilated in heavy combat with a much larger Red Army force. It is a pretty unknown engagement to most people, I have a book about it, these Norwegian SS men were brave soldiers and many of them still lay where they fell out there on the old battlefields in Karelia. About 120 men were KIA/MIA, and a small group managed to escape back to friendly lines while the rest were sent into the gulag system, only a few gulag survivors came back to Norway in the mid 1950's. Soviets lost at least 364 men killed, but hey, we all know how the Russians report their military losses🤣 so its probably much higher + the wounded.

Yes, it is especially worth telling how the valiant Norwegians made candlesticks from the skulls of dead Soviet intelligence officers. The loss of the Norwegians-100 killed, 41 captured, 49-escaped. episode of the battle-a group of Norwegian Rangers, sitting in a warehouse dugout, refused to take weapons three times, saying that for them "this war is over". losses of the red army - 58 killed, 190 wounded.

@@WaffenSSTotenkopf Of course, if you add 0 to the number of dead you named, it will be much more than stormed these 2 hills. The assault involved 2 battalions of the 731 rifle regiment of the 205 rifle division, supported by the regiment's artillery (76mm guns and 82mm mortars)

1:57 - Estonian 20th SS Division got an action with the Estonian Division of Red Army. Don't remember exactly the number of the regiment, but in the documents of that regiment all names and surnames are Estonian ones and the morale of soldiers described, like "Estonian Read Army soldiers are ready to crash the Estonian fascists". And, when reading the final letters describing the battle and the operation - they did it very successful.

@@TheAceDestroyer you are welcome! Currently watching the maps from the Russian archives. Don't you have any data about 48th Panzer Grenadier Regiment? See one map where some of the regiment troops were destroyed on the railroad close to Auvere station.

@@ivan_krause No, I was unable to find much about them. Other than the fact that they were almost entirely wiped out during their retreat from Narva to the Tannenberg line. The Auvere station seems to fit that description.

@@TheAceDestroyer Yep, already found the description of the battle with 48 PGR - the Soviet 552 and 559 Infantry Regiments of 191 Infantry (Rifle) Division "met" them in the forest close to railroad, that was up to 700 soldiers in 48th PGR, 120 soldiers were captured as prisoners and others are KIA.

@@TheAceDestroyer Found other source, in English, about that situation:"SS Regiment 48 was mostly in the woods to the southwest (of the highway when the first enemy vehicles came into view. During the fallback, the regiment was without provisions and heavy weapons. In difficult, bitter fighting in the forests east of Repiknu, a desperate situation developed. Between 1400 and 1700, the regiment split up into small groups of officers and men, to try and make their way out to the west, but most were killed or fell into enemy hands.” The source: Richard Landwehr, Narva 1944: The Waffen SS and the Battle for Europe, (Silver Springs: Bibliophile Legion Books, Inc 1981), 78-79.

Carius and his unit were featured in the previous videos. Certainly part III with the Krivasoo bridgehead, I believe part IV too, but I would have to check that again.

I saw a minor flaw in the map some 13 min's in your narrative. The village Lembitu isn't located properly. It lies more close to the railway crossing as in the beginning of the narrative. Not even in the book "With the Tiger on the Battlefield" by Otto Carius who fought here with the 502 nd heavy tank battalion is this village rightly located but nowadays it can be found by using Google maps

Just read about this battle. The author gave an estimate that in two weeks close to 10.000 defenders and maybe 30.000-40.000 attackers were lost in the Blue Hills battle. This happens to be quite close to what the casualties are said to be in the present Ukraine war - during the first six months.

Ace....gotta ask a dumb question but the Dutch were allied with the Germans?? Kinda ironic we were liberating Holland at the same time Dutch soldiers were fighting for the Germans!? I'd be curious if there is more information on this?? Thanks Ace ...have enjoyed your enlightening of history during WWII

Not in general. In 1940 the Dutch had fought the Germans and remained a German enemy until the end. However, at the same time propaganda of the 'Red Menace' and the coming of Communism from the Soviet Union made many volunteer to fight it. The same occurred in Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway,... Although their countries were enemies, several thousands of inhabitants enlisted in the German army to fight the Soviets on the Eastern front. It often had to do with religion and the upbringing against communism, etc. I do have to say that I don't know a lot about these European volunteers other than a few of their battles, but in general it's very interesting stuff how people eventually came to volunteer for the German army. I do think a few books touch upon that subject, but unfortunately I couldn't tell you which ones. I'm happy to see that you found the video interesting though!

I wonder if it might be worth sort of setting the scene for a bit at the beginning, with maybe half a minute of "orientation" in Time & Geography ; so that viewers coming to this can see it as a "Stand-Alone" Learning-Experience..., with a gentle "coming up to speed..." rather than being catapaulted into the Fray, so to speak ? It's OK for you to have all the "Flow" of the Campaign sorted out in your head, because you've been concentrating on it for years..., and you've been explaining it in these Videos - but the Viewers may be lucky to have even the sketchiest underconstumblings of where, when, & why all these places were considered to be worth dying to hold & defend, or to attack & take..., so you might want to sort of hold them by the hand & lead them up to speed...(?). I usually try to do this, but considering this is part 5 of the Narva series, there are 4 earlier episodes to set the scene and which can tell the interested viewer what exactly brought the Soviets and Germans to the Tannenberg line.

@@TheAceDestroyer Cool, Yeah, I know what you mean...., but it took me a minute to remember which particular (failed) part of Adolf's re-run of Napoleon's Grand Russian Tourist Adventure you were diving in to look at...; the bit towards the Northern part of the "Eastern" Front where/when Germany had to run away backwards, shortly before Finland abruptly switched sides to fight for Stalin after all (!). And I imagined how it would be for someone who found this in their Feed and it was perforce their introduction to the Channel as well as the particular Campaign. Merely a thought. Have a good one. Yesterday I managed to capture a Radio Interview with the particular Journalist who is being sued in Australian Civil Court for Slander, Libel, & Defamation of Character - by the Australian SAS Victoria Cross Recipient who is now the lead Subject of the 4-year Inspector General's Investigation into Oz SAS "Operators" committing War Crimes in Afghanistan..., which (the high powered Enquiry) arose out of the Journalist's coverage of the Story, about 4 &1/2 years ago. From 2005 to 2016..., about 12 SAS Officers are being investigated regarding 56 Unlawful Killings/War Crimes. I posted the Video of the captured Broadcast today. I thought you might be interested. They're apparently considering disbanding the SAS Regiment, like the Canadians actually did - after their "Peacekeepers" beat a teenager to death (for the fun of it) in Somalia, in 1993 (!). 11:20 That map is very misleading, indeed so are the later ones. You only point out the most extreme strength estimates, not using contemporary data available that contradict these. You are trying to fool people that two entire Soviet Armies attack a handful of men, when in reality each Soviet Army was a very similar size to the defenders.
