Horde comes from word Urdu/Ordo. Meaning army. Turko-mongolic in origin. Turkish military's war college is called Urdu (college). In EU4 turkish infantry regiments are named something like "ordusu" Afghanistan's army is called afghan milli Urdu, afghan national army, State language of Pakistan is called Urdu, from "Urdu=i=Mu'alla' (High Urdu), language of the mughal officer class of mixed origins.

It was just unstoppable for any of the Russian principalities or any nomadic tribes it met before. In a matter of fact Mongolian Empire just absorbed a vast nomadic population of Central Asian and what is now Southern Russian steppes. The only reason Mongol invasion did not come further to the Europe is that they simultaneously ran out of nomads to absorb (and recruit replacement for the fighting force from) and really good landscape to feed horses (well, those two factors are obviously connected). But since 14th century nd up to late 15th century Russians did not consider Mongols as an enemy at all. All the Russian military efforts were put to oppose Lithuania, Poland, Livonian Order and so on. Simply because it was doable and opposing Mongols was not.

This battle was portrayed in the 1938 film "Alexander Nevsky" by the extremely influential film maker, Sergei Eisenstein. The song used for the battle is also really great. "Battle on the Ice" by Sergei Prokofiev.

@MendTheWorld

my only knowledge of this battle prior to watching this video was from the movie "Alexander Nevsky" directed by Sergei Eisenstein, with wonderful musical score by Sergei Prokofiev. I already knew the music before I ever saw the movie, because of my roommate second semester freshman year at Purdue University, who opened my eyes to an incredible diversity of wonderful music. He was a remarkable guy, and I'm so grateful to him). but then at the end of that year I transferred to the University of Michigan, which had a lot more opportunities for cultural experiences, including several film series, which showed classic films essentially every night of the week. This was how I was able finally to see Alexander Nevsky, which I saw multiple times. Alexander Nevsky had a lot of anti-christian imagery, as the prevailing communist government in the Soviet Union at the time the movie was made was trying to undermine the influence of the church (You know, religion being the opiate of the people, and all that). So during the Battle on the Ice, when the Teutonic Knights were in the process of being defeated, there were images of Christian crosses falling before Alexander Nevsky's sword. but the most memorable part of the film was when the Teutonic Knights and their horses were so heavy that they began to break through the ice and fall to their death by drowning. It was almost like an Act of God, except that it obviously couldn't have been the Christian God who was responsible. Perhaps it was the spirit of Karl Marx (although he would not be born for another 600 years). I don't know! In any case, I was stunned to get to the end of the present video with nary a mention of the Teutonic Knights breaking through the ice and drowning. What??!! Am I to understand that this is just a myth, like Pharaoh's army drowning in the Red Sea? Someone please tell me that this detail was simply omitted accidentally. And am I to suppose that there was no baby carriage careering down the Odessa steps during the mutiny of the Battleship Potemkin as well??!! In any case, I recommend Prokofiev's magnificent score to anyone.

@@MendTheWorld I don’t understand where you saw anti-Christian propaganda in the film, especially when you consider that at the end in the scene of triumph, Orthodox churches and Russian banners with Jesus Christ and Archangels shown there. Eisenstein's film is pure anti-fascist (anti-Nazi) propaganda, you can watch the swastika on the clothes of German bishops, and the helmets of German infantry are very similar to the helmets of Wehrmacht soldiers. The crusaders in the film are represented as typical pseudo religious invaders, for whom religion is just a cover for their predatory policies, they were dangerous cultural and existential threat of medieval Russia. Incidentally, the operation of Barbarossa was supported by many in Europe as a crusade against atheists and Jewish Bolsheviks, including by the Pope and Catholic church. And i’m not even talking about the inscriptions on the belts of Nazis soldiers "Gott mit Uns" (God is with us), which did not stop them from commiting their atrocities and crimes against the Soviet people and did not help them win. By and large, this film is not about the events of the medieval history of Russia, but about the events that will happen a little later, in 1941-1945. This is symbolic (and yes, in many respects, propagandistic) cinema, which foresaw further events. Therefore, the film itself can be perceived as a historical monument of the Great Patriotic War (World War II). P.S. In addition, I did not find any falling crosses from the sword of Alexander, there is only one scene with a Teutonic camp falling at the hands of militias, on the roof of which there was a cross. If you are talking about crosses depicted on the armor and shields of the crusaders, then all claims and questions to them, and not to Eisenstein.

To live on the step you must gain a culture in which you live to fight. Europian step nomads where just as fearsome as the asian ones if not more. The reason the mongols conquered so much so fast is because they did something that was never deone before or after, they united the tribes and brought the imense war power to bear against settled civilizations not each other.

So the reason why Alexander chose that spot to pitch the battle was the tall cliffs on the eastern shore. The infantry was stationed right in front of them, so when the cavalry charge would break through, they'd have no room to turn around and reform the wedge for a second attack. Instead, they were surrounded on all sides.

In Russian schools that story is told weeeeery differently, including statements like "Livonians army was much stronger than Alexander's, also there were a lot of German knights in full plate armor (1242 AD, ahah) and they were scattered so much after the initial encirclement they fled into thin parts of the lake's ice, that collapsed under a weight of heavy cavalry and a lot of knights have drowned". Hell, I even know where those stories originate from: a soviet movie of 1930th by Sergei Eisenstein.

In Russia, till 17th century was only one dinasty “Ruricovichi”. Gademinovichi and other was in Lithuania. Vsevolodochi is not dinasty, they are sons of Vsevolod (bolshoe gnezdo), who was the Head of The Great Kingdom Volodimirskoe, with the main Russian capital city Vlodimir. The main capital Vladimir was since beginning 12 century, when all states regaly were taken from Kiev, by The Great Prince Andrey Bogolybski, Vsevolod’s older brother, and after him Vsevolod became The Great Knyaz. Title Knyaz =.hertsog = konung. But if “The Great Knyaz”, means King. The title Tsar means imperator, taken first time only in 16th century in Russia, before it they called by titile Tsar imperators in Bezantium and HolyRomEmp Germane (Habsburgs). After Mongol’s intervention, they called by the title Tsar, Han of the Ulus-Djuchi state, and only Chingidsids dinasty, capital in Sarai-Berke.

It was reported that _some_ did. How many is unclear. It was also reported that the center did not give in so easily because there was a rock behind it. I.e. it did give in - the militia couldn't possibly stand a heavy knights attack - but the knights found themselves not on an operational space, but facing an unpassable rock.

Hello! I would like to suggest something that could turn out into a great video. The Siege of Constantinople (717-718) as the last obstacle for an arab invasion of the balkan peninsula and all of Europe. Decisive victory over the Arabs with the combined arms of the Byzentines and the Bulgars(Bulgarians) who were led by Tervel, nicknamed after "The Saviour of Europe" by chroniclists. Thank you for reading! It would turn out a great video.

Because "decisive" means that the arabs were then repulsed from both Europe and Anatolia, the Byzantines survived for about 700 more years, the Califate entered a crises that would ultimately bring its downfall, a decisive victory doesn't need to end a country to be decisive and also yeah, the Arab Califate does not exist anymore.

A very silly synopsis of the Siege of Malbork/Marienburg: Poles & Lithuanians: "We beat you at Grunwald! Surrender the castle to us!" Teutonic Order: "It's Tannenberg, and no way!" Poles & Lithuanians: *stare at massive red brick walls* Lithuanians: "...So, uh...do we have to take this thing?" Poles: "...They didn't surrender, so, um...I guess so...Dammit, they were supposed to surrender like all the other castles! Now we have to actually siege this place!" Lithuanians: "Yeah, about that: When I said I'd work with you, I didn't mean I'd throw myself at an impregnable castle to get slaughtered pointlessly by angry Germans." Scout: "Guys! Guys! There's an army of crusaders coming to kick our asses!" Poles: "...Wat." Scout: "Apparently, all of Christendom's kinda pissed at you for allying with pagans to kick the crap out of a monastic order." Poles: "WHAT?!" Lithuanians: "lol. You're in trooooouble!~"" Poles: "YOU SHUT UP! But...but...how did they get an army together so fast?" Scout: "Oh, the Teutonic Order has chapter houses and hospitals all over Germany, so they spread the word. Also a lot of people have crusaded with the Order, so most people like them more than you." Lithuanians: "Well, then, if it's all the same to you, I'm gonna head on home." Poles: "Wait, what? You're just gonna quit? After everything we went through to get this far?" Lithuanians: "Yep. Unless you have any ideas for taking this castle? Or facing that crusader army coming? Poles: "...I'll pack up the tents." Lithuanians: "I thought as much."
