They say no such thing. Only 4 of the 11 (SC, GA, MS and TX reference slavery and the reference in the case of SC is the failure of the north to enforce fugitive slave laws. The others stress the economic importance of slavery to the South - which was a simple factual observation. Slavery was lawful, so referencing slavery in no way nullifies the validity of secession.

Nope. Every generation someone has to do the work to debunk this idea. This generation it is Chandra Manning, whose work looked at the letters written by CSA soldiers (who typically did not own slaves). The reason they fought so long and so hard, despite crazy odds, was to keep black men away from their women. If slavery ended, they thought the world would end. That was what the war was about. If you live another 30 years, the next generation will produce a scholar who will do the work, again.

Isn't a confederate monument just a participation trophy? #Hypocritemuch?
@niklaswassermann9971
@niklaswassermann9971 5 лет назад
That would assume the civil war was a contest of some sort. How many modern day contests can you name where people fight each other to the death? None? Good. We dont have Hitler statues in germany or any monuments to the Nazis outside of our museums, which is how it should be. Praising people that fought for slavery or white supremacy is an inherently stupid idea. That has nothing to do with participation trophies, and the comparison is quite moronic, I can only hope its sarcastic.
@-8_8-
@-8_8- 5 лет назад
I don't know how it's different than any other statue of any other person. I mean down in New Orleans is a gold statue of Joan of Arc. That lady was a warmonger with a taste for blood and used her god as the reason why. Is that statue a participation trophy? Or does the person have to be from where the statue is?
@niklaswassermann9971
@niklaswassermann9971 5 лет назад
You dont see the difference between a peasant girl that managed to rise to power in the military as a teenager fighting for french independence from england and a slave owner that went to war to keep his slaves or a Nazi? Really? Are you sure? Let me explain it then: You can celebrate a cause or celebrate accomplishments. If you put up a statue of Albert Einstein, everybody knows youre celebrating his genius as a physicist, not the way he treated his wife. If you put up a statue of Martin Luther King, you celebrate his cause to achieve equality among the people. If you put up a statue of a slave owner that lost a war to keep his slaves, got his people killed by the millions in the process, you are celebrating.... what? That awesome person, or his great accomplishment of starting a war to keep slavery? The comparison between Joan of Arc and confederate generals is fucking INSANE.
@-8_8-
@-8_8- 5 лет назад
@@niklaswassermann9971 you have a lot of assumptions based on a simple question. you don't know what my point of view is of any statue, I didn't give one. The statues that are being talked about are people that aren't from the areas that they're in. You're so upset you missed the question. What makes one a participation trophy? The point was they were both terrible people at war for terrible reasons. Both were deluded if they think god promoted their agenda. No one is arguing over statues of peaceful people here, like your example. I've seen a lot of warrior statues, are they all participation trophies? That's the question and yours is a challenge, not an answer.
@niklaswassermann9971
@niklaswassermann9971 5 лет назад
War can well make people worthy of statues, Lincoln is certainly worth all his statues for example, and he fought in a war too. Hell, one could argue he started one. Warrior statues are not participation trophies, first off because you wont find statues of anyone that lost a war anywhere but in the US, and second because a war is not a contest of any sort, as I pointed out before. Not only are all my points valid both in a general sense as well as as answers to your outrageous comparison, but they do answer your question. They are not both anything. There is no point for comparison outside of both fighting in a war, and that goes for the overwhelming majority of historic characters. Noone makes a statue for the losing side of a war, especially if they were slavers. Even if you somehow managed to squirm your way out of that argument, there is literally no point in having those statues up, the civil war wont be forgotten, you can remember the monsters on the wrong side of history in books like everyone else does-statues glorify them, and thats some bullshit. If I was black and living in a country that puts up statues of confederates, I would not just not feel welcome, I would leave to a more developed country where people are taught in school that racism is an inherently stupendous concept. Anyone putting up or defending those statues has evidently not truly grasped that.

It amazes me that people still deny that the war was about slavery. The confederate states themselves cited slavery as their official cause for seceding. Here's a bit from Mississippi's: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization" Louisiana's: "As a separate republic, Louisiana remembers too well the whisperings of European diplomacy for the abolition of slavery in the times of annexation not to be apprehensive of bolder demonstrations from the same quarter and the North in this country. The people of the slave holding States are bound together by the same necessity and determination to preserve African slavery." Texas: "...in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations;"

@SeaKnight_Rory
@SeaKnight_Rory 4 года назад
@@sle2470 Doesn't mean that they aren't valuable. As humans, we must learn from our mistakes. Think of the future generations we can't hide the truth from them they need to know so that history doesn't repeat itself. It is my belief that when a statue is in a city it is being "worshipped" - the person in the statue is being praised. But when a statue is in a museum it is only history. And, yes it might not seem like history to us - today - but nor does the current Pandemic. Historians of the future will study this time as we study WW1 and WW2 modern history isn't invaluable. It's crucial for us to continue developing and growing as a race. Many of these people do not deserve to have a monument of their facade in a city as we can see, now, that their actions were wrong. But we can't just cover it up. I understand the anger of so many people. You want to hurt these people for everything they've done for all those people they've hurt but the only way you can do that is by hurting their image - their statue - and I am not countering that they deserve that. But a statue is an image of a person; a way of remembering them. You can hurt someone's image without having to do so physically. If these statues were in a museum and young kids from the future see them and read the sign that says everything this horrific person has done they will immediately dislike them. Their image will forever be tainted with hatred. But I must reiterate that we cannot hide from our past by melting it away we need to look at it in the eye and ask why it was wrong and what we can do to help make sure that something like that will *never* happen again.

Certainly more than there were Robert E. Leeses. All things being fair and proportionate there should be a few thousand monuments dedicated to American slaves to remind us of the horrors of that time for every one Confederate statue trying to convince us of how great those guys were. If anyone is confused about American history, look at this way: After Germany lost WWII every German born thereafter was made brutally aware TO THIS DAY that their country supported a cause that was very much so wrong. America never had that, ever. Not just when the south lost the civil war, but also when all of America lost the Vietnam war, and even now as we have zero forward progress or resolution in our 20 year middle east wars, no one, no group of Americans ever were told they were wrong. EVEN IN OUR AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, where fucking half the country fought the other half the South pretty much got off scot-free. Just research "reconstruction" and Andrew Johnson's Presidency. Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee both died free men shortly after the Civil War, so much so that I PERSONALLY KNOW PEOPLE who graduated from Davis Elementary School and Robert E. Lee High School less than 30 years ago. While all the newly "free" black enslaved Americans were trampled upon by Jim Crow laws. You can trace that shit allll the way to now, if you ever wonder why Trump is so popular in America, Americans have never once been taught a significant historical lesson. We mostly won wars (if you were white) and even if you lost civil wars (if you were white) no real punishment. Now we are here. We fucking earned whatever shit is on the way. One day, mark my words, Karma is gonna fucking fuck us up big time. I pray I can raise my children in a time of peace, but knowing history, oh lord do I doubt it.

The old adage that you learn more from failure than success is true. The big losers of WW2, Germany, Japan and Italy have all progressed to be fairly progressive and liberal countries (certainly in comparison to what they were and what the victors have gone on to become), whilst the winners went on with new found confidence in their ideals and have became regressive international bully-boys. By which I primarily mean the US and Russia/Soviet Union. The UK and France both had their economies shattered by the war and underwent change as well, theirs was a pyrrhic victory that they also seemed to learn from to some extent.

The guy might be a disgusting racist, but he has his facts mostly right. The Recent Out of Africa Origin theory postulates that a small population of anatomically modern humans migrated out of Africa between 100 to 80 thousand years ago. That small population gave rise to all other non-african populations. These early populations in turn interbred to various degrees with other human species, like the Neanderthals and Denisovans, as they spread into the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and eventually the Americas. As a result of the founder effect on the small population that left Africa, Africa has more genetic, cultural, and linguist variety than the rest of the world put together, despite what outward skin color might show. While ancient human populations did remain relatively isolated for thousands of years until the Late Neolithic/Bronze Age (7,000-5,000 years ago) when there was more migrations and movement of people, specially in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, what the racist guys says next is plain wrong. You can't "reverse" evolution. Even if human populations have been geographically separated (not anymore since the last 500 years) for thousands of years, it's is nothing in the geological and species timeframes. We are one species, period.

Disclaimer: if you're not going to read this whole thing or going to post something not constructive just get over it and move on with your life. Oh my god, the amount of blame slinging in this comment section. Yes Africans sold their own people into slavery but that doesn't change the fact the south tried to secede in order to keep their right to own people (it was also fought over trade issues and other factors but to ignore the role slavery played is just ignorant, even the racist admitted it). Yes, democrats were the party of racists for a long time. Yes, the North still didn't count black people as fully human. Yes, Lincoln once thought a good option would be to send the black people back to Africa. But that doesn't change the fact that people today are worshipping confederates as if they didn't think it was their right to own a human being. The man in this video who wants change to the Stonewall monument wasn't saying the answer was to destroy the wall, he said it needs to be changed to reflect the true nature of the reality of the antebellum South for a good portion of the population at that time. And don't say this is some special history preserving since most of these monuments were put up well after the war to specifically celebrate white pride. This whole debate is stupid, we have to acknowledge the failures of our history and our leaders in order to learn from their mistakes. Not worship them while ignoring their failings, that's what a totalitarian regime does. God, I'll admit both sides are divisive but reading through the comments, it's mostly people defending old southern racists by blaming other groups for doing bad things. Just a rant because I'm tired of this stupid debate. If you made it this far, have a cookie and nice day.

Now the right, WELL.. with all this " if you work hard you can do anything bullshit "has fooled half the country. people are homeless, uninsured and jobs are scarce. free education is not that hard , ( LOOK AT THE GLOBE) raising minimum wage a necessity for people to afford paying the rent. CAN YOU REALLY BE A PRODUCTIVE CITIZEN WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE, NO EDUCATION AND MAKING 200 A WEEK AFTER A LONG HARD WEEK OF WORK. RENT ALONE IS 1400 A MONTH IN NJ. AND 3000 IN NYC. So its another way to control people. a different kind of slavery. Are there a few lucky ones that escape the trap? yes. but most of America is blinded . fake patriotism.. if people cared about each other , they would look out for their neighbor too. but no. we ARE TOO DAM SELFSIH AS A NATION AND AS INDIVIDUALS. Now Im not a genius, but I do know that may be 40% of the population knows that what im saying is true. on both ends republicans suck and democrats suck for different reasons. But they also know that THERES NOT A GOD DAM THING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. AND THATS THE TRUTH. PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS try to controll and enslave other people. its all about the money. yes ..but so very unfortunate and sad for those at the bottom. Now while i ranted about the right ..i also have come to realize that political correctness is ruined this country and crippled it. THE FIRST AMENDMENT IS CRUCIAL TO OUR SURVIVAL AS A PEOPLE. LASTLY, men and women and both EQUALLY human and so are rich and poor. If Jesus came back, the media would vilify and persecute Him again. He would be crucified again because you wouldnt like his views . He was a radical. the type of radical we need more of in this world. martin luther king , nelson mandela, john lennon, john f kennedy. GANDHI... if you dont see it this way , its because it doesn't affect you. but every person will one day meet his maker. in this life or the next. hopefully. we have to stop being so self centered , so arrogant and so selfish. But the whole country was racists, the Native America genocide was still going on. Hell the American government still runs reservations for Indians that cant sell their land, profit from natural resources on their land, or make their own Laws that are not with in the confines of the US constitution. David Danielson I get your point. It's difficult to say where to draw the line but, in my opinion just putting an explanation plaque up that explains what they did good and bad and why they are memorialized in statue while acknowledging what they did is good enough. I know that's not enough for some people, but it seems like a good middle ground. However, a lot of these statues were purposely put up to antagonize black people during the civil rights movement and if we aren't going to take those down we at least need to acknowledge the real reason they are up.

Well, technically it was the economy. Slaves weren't viewed as people, but more like farming equipment. In the South's mind, the North was basically trying to limit the amount of tractors farmers could have and on top of that giving the tractors the right to a partial vote. By disallowing the amount of tractors the South could have the economy of the South would have been damaged severely. That was the mindset, and why so many Southerners will try to defend the Civil War. Slavery was a major driving force of the economy, thus those that say it was the economy think slaves were nothing more than tractors

"If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I cannot remember a time I did not so think and feel" - Lincoln. Lincoln was clear in private that he was ONLY interested in freeing the slaves, he only said otherwise in speeches because EVERYONE else in that era was evil and liked slavery, even in the north, he had to pretend otherwise to get it done, THAT is a great man and politician. Read some actual accounts of what he said to people in private, and also read A Team of Rivals.

Wisconsin never liked slavery , they btw refused to register the fugitive slave act , so the county sherrifs had no law , the bounty hunters got forstalled , the black s got left alone.

No one should think that these statues were meant to be somber postbellum reminders of a brutal war. They were built much later, and most of them were explicitly created to accompany organized and violent efforts to subdue blacks and maintain white supremacy in the South. I wouldn’t be surprised if even a lot of Southerners don’t really understand this, but they should learn. There’s a reason blacks consider these statues to be symbols of bigotry and terror. It’s because they are. - Kevin Drum (mother Jones)

I'm getting so tired of hearing this ridiculous line "it wasn't about slavery, it was about states' rights." It was the states' rights to have slavery that was in contention. It was about both.

I must say Jim this segment was very well done. Not saying that I think you would have sucked at it but that it was a well done choice of focus. You we a very adequate neutral party for the ones interviewed.
@eartheartbaratheon791
@eartheartbaratheon791 6 лет назад
Actually, he seems hugely biased when you look at how he acts towards every of his speakers. He doesn't try to conceal his emotions, even worse, he boosts them and imidiately shows what his point of view is to make them seem either stupid or intelligent. There was not a single neutral thing, just look at how he reacts to what's being said.
@Tobizz3

For good reasons. He's talking to people that ignore or change historical facts, or pretend slavery was a minor oppression.
@sirhasslich536
@sirhasslich536 5 лет назад
Those are not good reasons. If he wanted to show that those people are wrong in doing what they do, he should have stayed above them in terms of bias and opinion enforcing. When the plot has a clear protagonist who is charismatic, he should stay actually neutral instead of doing the theatrical brow raising at every point that in the script is marked as "bad/wrong". It makes this video look like a propaganda instead of an ignorance showcase. It is the same as arguing in the internet: you will hardly make the opponent change his opinion, but if only one of you will call the other a "12yo" and refrain from referring to a lot of true actual facts, every other person watching the conversation who does not have the similarly rigid point of view will almost definitely take the side of the one who seems more intelligent/correct(not as in "right") On subject: I do think that that monument should be somehow fixed and that Civil War was about slavery to a very significant extent. Cannot be too sure or anything, since I am not remotely american. But I just really hated the way Jim acted in this particular piece, check above as to why.

randy zakem alot where drafted or angry about how the union treated the southerners in situations like shermans march (a late war reference) but most of the early confederates did fight for slavery. And some people like robert e lee only fought to protect their home

randy zakem That's why those aren't built anymore... The point is that distroying them isn't going to change anything. If anything it's going to make people forget...

TheDerpingDutchman You don't have to destroy them put them in the museums or whatever but at least put plaques on them that State that they are criminals not heroes you definitely have to take it off all the buildings especially the schools I don't think kids should have to go to Robert E Lee high school !
@TheDerpingDutchman
@TheDerpingDutchman 6 лет назад
randy zakem We don't have to say either ... Just describe who they were, what they fought for and what they were responsible for. Don't put them in museums. That would be a mistake since most people wouldn't go out to see them. Let me ask you this: Should germany destroy their old concentration camps because it's offensive to everyone who had familymembers who died there? Should the Netherlands destroy their models of 17th century ships because they were trading slaves? It's ridiculous to destroy or remove monuments because some people can't handle history and get offended.

@Devil-tm4nu
@Devil-tm4nu 6 лет назад
The monument shouldn’t be celebrated nor should it be taken down, it’s purpose should be to remind us of our past mistakes, destroying it would kill that purpose.
