Edit: some of this I can barely remember it was over 20 years ago and I was about 4 or 5. This is a weak point in current gun control efforts. Also, you can have gins shipped to you as long as they are "technically" a pistol or even an air rifle that can have higher fire rates than actual firearms, and all firearms must be shipped by licensed dealers if interstate. If it is within state borders, federally you don't need a license. These can vary by local legislation.

If you do buy online and you can, sites like gun broker, they legally have to be shipped to a licensed dealer who (once the fire arm is recieved) will do a background check and apply all federal, state, and local laws for where you the buyer live, which may or may not include fees, certain taxes, and waiting periods. So the idea that it's just a click away I guess is depending on how you look at it.

You don't have to be trained or disciplined like in Japan, you just can't have any previous offenses and you're clear (except for domestic abuse apparently). Mental health checks also aren't universal (don't know about where you live though).

It's not the background check that's the problem, it's that the information doesnt always get reported. Any background check system would have the same problem if the info wasnt being put into the database.

I live in a small town with low crime in Indiana. It took over a year for my unsecured bike to finally be stolen (frankly, I left it out on purpose). As a nightshifter, I enjoy jogs at 3 am. I don't know why I even wanted a pistol. When I purchased my 1st firearm (9mm from Rural King) It took roughly 20 minutes and I literally checked boxes like "are you a terrorist" and "are you and illegal immigrant". I cant make this shit up. I only bought it as a joke to "get my US citizenship".

First, why were they shot? Gang related? Unless you are in a gang, you are a bit more safe. Muggings gone wrong? I dont think you are normally carrying more cash than the cost of a pistol, so just giving the money would be a wise decison business wise. But I'm not saying a normal law abiding citizen cant get randomly targeted by gun violence, it happens all the time sadly. So say that happens. You are carrying a gun and some guy puts his gun in your face... What help is that gun really? There is no way even a highly trained navy seal would be able to grab his gun from the holster, point it at the guy and shoot, before the guy pulls the trigger because he made a sudden move. But lets say theres another situation where you experience someone else in trouble. You come to the rescue. There basically 3 likely outcomes: 1; you are too late and now a witness to a crime done by a man with a gun. 2; You get shot yourself trying to save the person. 3; you shoot and likely kill the attacker. Now, while 3 is the best outcome, even though the attacker obviously "deserved" it and its better to kill him than you or the victim, you have still taken a life. No matter how justicefied that kill was, it will still haunt you for the rest of your life. All this said, im not saying you shouldnt be allowed a gun. If you pass an extensive background check and get adequit training in handling the firearm, go ahead. Just please consider this friendly argument before you do so. Time and time again has prove that generally, more guns is not the answer. Less guns are.
