As part of an ongoing series of films about breaking down the stigmas associated with living with HIV, Vice News profiles newly commissioned officer Nicholas Harrison as he attends the Direct Commissioning Course (DCC) at Fort Moore. Lt. Harrison recently won a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense to allow him to become the first person to receive a commission while living openly with HIV.

Well, when you serve in the military, you may get wounded thru training or war time, spread blood to others, etc. It's a high risk occupation. I can see why they would restrict someone with HIV in the military.

This has nothing to do with a soldiers combat capability or performance. It boils down to transmitting a life altering infectious disease to one of your comrades which, without doubt, could have a high risk of transmit during a combat casualty response. A combat medic could have open wounds while attending to a soldier who also has open wounds. I think people with these diseases can still fulfill vital combat roles such as communications, logistics, drone pilots/pilots, etc.

@@retingo7940 Based upon the original post, and the question that was asked in the comments, NO, I don't think he was asking what specific date. Why would that in any way be relevant? It does not even make sense to ask the question. The only plausible reason for the question is WHEN did he find out he was HIV +, as in before he signed up or after the induction process started. My reading comprehension is perfect, thank you very much. But just in case your reading comprehension needs some assistance, here is the OPs statement in quotes regarding timing: "I was denied to join the military because i had HIV. I had no idea." So, the OP did not know when he contracted it. He found out after he was going through the induction process. Then, the dude that asked the question in the comments said: "when did u find out u had it?" The obvious answer is during the OPs induction process. At no point did the commenter want to discern a precise date. If he wanted a precise date, then he should have asked (but again, it would not be relevant to the OPs post would it?)

As long as they don't die (which the vast majority of major injuries are) from the injury, I guarantee the average soldier who contracted HIV in that manner would be absolutely devasted and suffer from that for life. Its not a joke or something people should just hand wave away because its a "forbidden" topic that people would like to handle with kid hands. Also, there's a thousand other disqualifying conditions that prevent the average person from joining the military... at least this one has a solid reason for why its in place. I read about this case. This man is HIV+ but he’s on the treatment regimen and his HIV is undetectable. Which means it’s extremely unlikely that he can transmit it to others because the ART meds are working. People need to stop believing all the hysteria because this isn’t the 80s or early 90s. It’s not a death sentence or high liability anymore as long as you get treatment as soon as possible.
@user-xp5id1kh4r

See... you actually have a sane comment here. However, the overwhelming majority of comments here on the "pro-HIV" (I guess I'll call it) side... are spreading very harmful lies that a person with HIV can NOT transmit the disease as long as they're on medication. That's NOT true. It drastically reduces the likelihood of transmission, but it does NOT make it impossible or zero. The real conversation here is if a person with HIV should be allowed to serve in the military outright, in select cases, or at all - due to the possibility of transmitting the disease to other innocent people. There's literally hundreds of things that can disqualify people from joining the military, including immutable autoimmune diseases that can't be transmitted, there's no reason why HIV should not be one of them (potentially). A more nuanced approach would probably be to allow HIV infected people in/serve in the military... but just NOT in every MOS/profession and NOT in every location. So, probably let them serve as a logistician working at some depot level maintenance facility in CONUS... but probably NOT let them deploy overseas as an infantryman on the front line.

This means that the chances of contracting HIV from him are extremely low but not zero. In that case, I would think that everyone should have personal Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) which must be taken within 72 hours of exposure if they ever treat Harrison just as a precaution. Maybe even have a patch that indicates he is HIV positive just so the personnel on the Medevac knows to take their PEP.

In my personal opinion. It’s sad to know that these people care more about those people who have it, rather than those who don’t. This ain’t about one’s ability and capability of the soldier. It’s about transmitting this disease to those who don’t have it during combat casualty response. Imagine a medic or a fellow soldier with an open wound attending to a soldier with HIV or vice versa is much worse than getting wounded on the battlefield. So y’all can’t blame soldiers who refuse to work with a fellow soldier who has it because want to protect themselves and their families from contracting this life-altering disease. No, bad idea. Soldiers become splattered with blood from those being killed around them. Not to mention the Medics and Corpsmen are very vulnerable to infection.

Just wanted to say, @Vice, great production. Love the military content, if you could keep pushing more stories on about it that’d be awesome!

Dude are you deployable? Yes. g2g No. Will you be deployable? Yes g2g No. Retired or early seperation Not to mention lets just say somehow someway you are hurt and bleeding in a mass casualty event...a medic treats you and inevitably gets youre blood on them then they treat someone else.obviously changes gloves but still, theres a lot of residual blood around. Im not saying it woud happen but the chances are very high for some cross infection action. Like wth? Not to mention you will be MORE susceptable to infections in general...why would you stay in?! One person gets sick EVERYONE does. You have a comprimised immune system. Youd get really really sick. Youre always in close proximity to someone else in the Army. Get over youre fear of the civilian world homie.

No, HIV medication have advanced a lot since the 90s...people do not have any viruses in their blood anymore, even babies are born without getting it from their mother!

This video glosses over and doesnt explore a LOT of parts of this story. I really disliked how the Captain stated despite his injury he would be completing the course and would pass no issue. How can you be guranteed to pass OCS?? Also why was he injured allowed go half do the stuff. I knew a person who injured his wrist at basic had to go home for 3 weeks and then go back and finish basic with a different class( i get its different but still). I know multiple people who couldnt enlist due to medical issues many more minor then this.... as he stated many people are either medically retired or certainly not pushed to OCS after acquiring an auto immune disease.... it also appear based off current army regs he cant serve in combat rolls now. It just seems curious besides the lawsuit why does this guy get special treatment?? It seems pertinent to the story how he got the HIV is it because hes gay, did he get accidently stuck with a needle what happened. Assuming he did not have it when he joined the army ? So many oddities to this situation. Seems like a nice dude but certainly a strange situation for once the armies standing made sense.

People will be afraid to touch you, your blood 🩸, your tears, your sweat 😓. People don’t understand HIV no matter what is published all they see is death ☠️. Members of the military are bone 🍖 headed about situations like this, it’s not their fault it’s about where they were raised, how they were raised and their poor edgamacation.

Good god, peoples ignorance on HIV is amazing. If people are taking effective treatment their viral load is not non-detectable, and thus they are non-contagious. The question is not HIV status, but adherence to treatment. Adherent people are no risk. This should not impact your career, unless you make the idiotic position not to take your treatment.

From what I saw on the Army website, HIV means one has to be put in a different role, presumably not combat or outside the US. I don't understand all the organizational stuff, but I don't see how one is a liability if they're not in a position where the whole "what if he bleeds on someone" thing could apply.

Because chances are that sooner or later in the military you will be bleeding on someone or someone will be bleeding on you. Just the nature of the beast. Knowing what the military does would you want to run that risk?

Just because you could fight for a spot doesn’t mean you should. People are weird. This puts a lot of added risk and pressure on whatever unit he’s in and it’s sad he doesn’t seem to weigh that as heavily as a responsible and humble person should.
