Sources Used:
Finding more detailed information in English on these two battles was quite difficult, so I mostly relied upon descriptions from the Japanese Wiki Corpus and Sengokujidai.org.
However, I was also able to use the primary source of Ota Gyuichi through his work in "The Chronicles of Lord Nobunaga".

"Symphonic Ode Gotama the Buddha" by Akira Ifukube

Classical art, which in most cases can be considered public domain.

To hear of the Mori and Oda navies waging a sea battle is one legendary feat. To cover the sidelined naval battles Oda Nobunaga had waged against his lesser and greater rival clans such as the Kitabatake in Ise Bay and the Takeda across the shores of Sagami is another more bizarre tale to explore in this Age of Warring Clans where pirates do rule the East Asian waves

The most famous naval force is the Murakami navy. Murakami Navy was said to be the strongest navy in the Sengoku period. They ruled the Seto Inland Sea. They were both pirates and friends of the Mori family. The Murakami Suigun was ruled jointly by three families. Later, they sided with the Toyotomi family, but Hideyoshi Toyotomi's ban on pirates made their activities difficult, and they were moved to a territory without a sea during the Edo period. And I am surprised there is no English wiki on Murakami navy.

A book I have on the Imjin war went into detail on the Turtle ships and his conclusion was that the turtle ships had the spikes on top and were coated to be fire resistant, they were not armored. The old Korean documentation never said anything about armor. It seemed a translation (to English or French) mangled some words and that is when the idea the ships were armored gained currency. He also points out that Kuki, even though he was one of Hideyoshi`s admirals, did not send over armored ships (which the author thought was pretty foolish)

My impression is that Yi Sun-sin's turtle ships weren't ironclads so much as they were "woodclads," that is, wooden ships built with way stronger wooden members (or "scantlings") than you'd expect in ships of their size. The legendary USS Constitution is one such "woodclad," a frigate built with battleship-grade scantlings proof against the armament of many British men o' war of the time, which is how she earned the nickname "Old Ironsides."

You really have to wonder why the Japanese didn’t go all-in on naval artillery during the Sengoku Era, given the success the Oda had with much larger and gun-armed ships, and given that this was when boarding tactics were being supplanted by line-of-battle tactics in Europe and (once Admiral Yi was put in naval command) in Korea. This is even more ironic once you realize that during the one other time when naval combat fundamentally changed in a way that all but completely invalidated the previous paradigm (from naval artillery to aircraft carriers), Japan was one of the three navies that invested heavily into carriers right from the start, and the first to master carrier strike doctrine.

I must wonder; when i see such large lumbering ships as the Bune and similar, would it not perhaps have been logical to develop ramming tactics by faster smaller vessels with armoured bows? After all, crashing a large hole into such a super sized vessel would, even if the rammer were lost in the process, be an efficient trade with regards to power?
@carloshenriquezimmer7543
@carloshenriquezimmer7543 Год назад
To be able to ram a ship needs to be fast and heavy, also they need very sturdy keels and a somewhat deep draft. A light ship would just bounce off, due to lack of momentum. And the junk stile of ships are not sturdy enough, as most did not even had a proper "bow to stern" keel, but were made of bulkhead like sections butted togheter. Plus, the flat bottom of those designs did not had the narrow beam to be fast enough to ram, and had a shallow draft, so the ram would make them nosedive at every rowstroke. They woud need to redesign theyr ships at every detail to look like an european galley or something like it.
@konstantinriumin2657
@konstantinriumin2657 Год назад
Koreans used tides and currents to just smash these ships against one another. They were very bad at actually sailing, being massive fortresses on ships.

If Nobunaga was able to put at least six big ironclads to sea, where were they during the Imjin War? Why weren't more of them built to oppose Yi Sun-sin's turtle ships?
@konstantinriumin2657
@konstantinriumin2657 Год назад
They were, even larger ships were built. But they had two problems: first, they were very slow and couldn't maneuver well, which allowed smaller, but more agile turtle ships to dominate them using familiar terrain, reefs and currents. Second, they weren't very seaworthy and some broke down or capsized and sank in open sea. So, while they did their job as coastal monitors in Nobunaga's wars, in Korea they were outmatched.
