Ahhh, yes, the summer of 1964. I was eight, and living in Galveston, Texas, and this song definately reminds me of better times. I was on the beach nearly every day, and my 16-year-old brother was into cars and girls and this song was on the radio. ❤
Started the creative competition between the Beatles and The Beach Boys, who influenced each other. What a year 1964 was! The country was recovering from the Kennedy assassination, and these bands were the treatment.
#1 in 1964, on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. not easy to do with the Beatles dominating the charts as well as other competition. That's Glen Campbell playing the lead guitar...other musicians known as the Wrecking Crew played on these records, and Campbell was one of them before national fame.
Exactly it’s a Surf Beach tune , it was all feel good kids having a good time. Riding in cars meeting other kids But it’s the circular harmonies are it’s heart.
Listen to the voices, the harmonies. They did to a certain extent what the old doo-wop groups did back inte the fifties but they put a rockin beat to it and developed a sound that became their own. I simply love the Beach Boys.
Without the vocals youd notice more how brian's songs were almost set up like little symphonies...a pop arrangement like that would still be difficult to pull off today, even with all the tech on the music making apps...u have to have a vision....or, "a vision" of hearing it in ur head.
Eventually we won't have to just explain corded phones and pay phones, but even cars with gas engines, and cars that didn't drive themselves. - sigh - The generation living in the era of this song is fairly well portrayed in the movie "American Graffiti."
