I discovered this film less than 24 hours ago and I must say that I am amazed. This is perhaps the most touchingly powerful pieces of art that I have seen in a very long time.
They both had mental and emotional problems. It may not be an issue for YOU to clean up the place, but what what degree do you have that allows you to judge them capable of "normal" behavior??
...but that they were left to fend for themselves...barely managing...is so sad & yet you have to admire their tenacity to keep going. the conditions were filthy & should not be 'romanticised' for the sake of other elderly folk living in poor or squalid conditions today & after all the Beale women amounted to far more than the house itself, as beautiful & awe inspiring though it was. Edie you truly were Revolutionary!!! glad to say i find the film & their story more inspiring than sad.
I just saw the movie with Barrymore and Lange. Loved it! Then I rented the documentary.Loved it too! And chefmate 1951,what you said...true. That doesn't make it not a sad story. The sadest stories are those we bring on ourselves.
Because my mum worked on the film (albeit in a production assistant capacity but she had a lot of the inside scoop. I also verified it by asking some other people and now I am going to Google and see if it says otherwise. We thought it so horrendous at the time but they were gullible in many ways according to my mum but really nice women-both of them.
jennmooney so she never actually met them, has no idea what she’s talking about, aaand she wasn’t even doing real post production work - she was an assistant. They were far from gullible, little brain, they merely didn’t give a fuck what stupid people thought about them. Especially some young dumb girl who comes from the lower classes who didn’t even actually meet them once. Come on now.
'Are you ready for your steeple-chase, Lorraine, Lorraine, Lorree? Barum, Barum, Barum, Barum, Barum, Barum, Baree, You're booked to ride your capping race to-day at Coulterlee, You're booked to ride Vindictive, for all the world to see, To keep him straight, to keep him first, and win the run for me. Barum, Barum,' etc.
I’m appalled at the judgment in the comments. You don’t understand and you don’t know. No one takes into account how sensitive a person really is, incredibly sensitive.
michelle i perhaps you should take five minutes out of your revoltingly judgmental life to educate yourself about their family. They came from literal American royalty. The Beales, Bouviers, and the Kennedys are the closest thing to royalty our country has ever had. And you could never dream of being as refined and well educated and well bred as they were.
Kitana Kojima No no you cannot be mad at her for pointing out the truth. I do not care if they came from King Solomon that were living in DISGUSTING conditions here and it is likely they were disgusting before and just had people cleaning up after them 🙄 They clearly were not refined enough to clean up after themselves 🤮.....
Jerry wright who? You and your lack of intelligence and taste? Oh and by the way, Fiona Apple would fucking loathe you. She herself has struggled with OCD for YEARS and I’m sure she’d be appalled by you.
timm9 considering the fact that they were still significantly wealthy despite the state of the home, it’s not so bad. And 5k in 1977 was far more than it is now. And Jackie and Caroline put forth THOUSANDS to help clean up the home. They still had tons of extremely valuable possessions and antiques. After little E sold the home she moved to NYC and Florida and lived a pretty cushy life.
A few flies. Live in Australia or Asia and you'll know what real bugs are. Better bugs than insecticide in your pores. Most Americans live in overly aseptisised conditions and have low immunity and allergies.
Halcyon they had a serious epidemic of scabies in the home because of taking in and caring for homeless cats who had mange. Unfortunately people who mean well and are trying to help animals often aren’t capable of taking care of them. They didn’t understand the fact that it was sarcoptic mange and that the bugs can jump to humans. In one of the scenes they stand and spray themselves down with bug spray and discuss the scabies without realizing that’s what it was. I live in Florida and we have hella bugs, ticks, sqeets, etc. none compare to nasty scabies because they burrow into your skin.
TI HIST IS WHAT HAPPENDS WHEN FILTHY RICH PEOPLE BECOME POOR, THEY LACK THE SKILLS NEEDED TO SURVIVE NORMALLY AND PRODUCTIVLEY. These two ate caned food and candy and since there was no servants they didnt know how to clean. Sad
@@vincentvargas6224 you're right, that and the fact that their poverty, and self imposed seclusion, which they obviously had trouble dealing with, caused a certain level of mental illness.
Carol Thomas actually, you horrific looking old hag, they both had acute obsessive compulsive disorder - a hereditary mental illness. And both were a thousand times more talented, beautiful, well bred, and well educated than some judgmental old hag like you could ever dream of being. If you’re too ignorant to understand mental disorders and how they affect people and their surroundings, shut the fuck up.
Carol Thomas: I think they were both let down by the men in their lives. Little Edie’s father went off with his secretary. He appears to have been a very strict father and unsympathetic figure when it came to his daughter. Big Edie’s father also let her down by disinheriting her for what appears to be trivial reason. And lastly, the two son’s little Edie’s brother’s didn’t help either. Aristotle Onassis and the Bouvier cousins helped these ladies the most.
