I loved this ep & I really liked your reaction to it. Your understanding of Carmy's balancing act or failure to find balance in pursuit of his professional goal over any personal goals was spot on.

This episode got a lot of flak and I can't seem to understand why. I thought it was beautifully done, a "the road so far" just not as...wholesome and feelgood.

People seem to hate it because it's a "montage episode", which I don't understand. We've never seen Carmy's past and how he came to be the best chef in the world. This episode shows precisely that, and I think we the audience needed to see that.

The girl who is in the bed with Claire is her friend Kelly - the one who was crying about her boyfriend breaking up with her at the party Claire and Carmy went to last season. She was also with Claire at Friends & Family and there's a scene where Ted Fak is trying to hit on her while he's standing by his brother.

He wanted to perfect his cooking skills for all the wrong (and some right ;) ) reasons: being bullied by the toxic chef and ‚revenge’ on Mikey who in his head had rejected him. It’s all he knows, so with Claire, who gives him peace and acceptance, he’s lost and scared.

Notice that the guy who ended up becoming head chef at Terry's restaurant (the "Fuck you Garret!" guy) was one of the people working alongside Carmy when he was there, and Carmy was promoted above him. Syd doesn't actually have a fennel allergy (she ate something with fennel back in S1), Carmy was just rebelling and sending out the dish as he made it, not as chef David told him to make it. He lied about why.
