Wow Liam I remember talking to you a while back , So cool to see you on the podcast bro , been watching your stuff for years , love the Beatles community , everyone is so cool , very informative stuff , cheers fellas
Fun stuff! Old coot here- 😂 I was in a “mostly” all original Prog band in 1974 (we did a few covers as well as our own tunes), our keyboardist had this Exact same Vox organ (it had a very distinct sound, not always the sound we were hoping for, but you worked with what you had back then. When our manager acquired a mini Moog, that made all the difference). I remember wishing we had a Leslie or something, to beef up the sound of that Vox, but for Beatles covers (we did cover I’m Down), or The Doors (yep- we did a pretty accurate version of Light My Fire), it was perfection. Fun video guys!!!
I’m a drummer and I have studied all the Beatles gear extensively. However, I’ve never gone deep on the VOX Continental. Very informative! Thank you!!!!
Hi fellas, I am absolutely loving your channel. For the more discerning Beatles student, your show is truly second to none. As well as you all being so knowledgeable - it's the way that you share your information that counts the most; which is through pure love and passion. I was always fascinating by the clothing side of The Beatles and went down that specific rabbit-hole, which guided my life both career wise and in my leisure time as well. Which lasted for over three decades here in England. Keep up the good work and I believe that your show will grow and grow.
In December 1965 Paul played chords on the VOX Continental to emulate the strings on Yesterday, John, George and Ringo played their regular instruments. At the show in Liverpool, John also played the organ on We Can Work it Out.
Love the insight to all this....great string episode, don't know too much of the technical stuff but it's good to know now I have an idea and I can pick and choose.... Enjoy the Fest !!! I'm hoping to make it to Chicago this August good times fer sure !!!
I love this channel so much!!! The passion for the details of Beatles gear and song craft are unmatched!! I have but one request (for now 😆): is there any way you guys can do a deep dive into the Beatles' use of the Fender Stratocaster? That would be the single biggest thing I would love to see. Thank you so much for the time and energy you pour into these wonderful episodes!!!
I very much appreciate that!! It's so neat watching y'all go through pictures of them in the studio and listen so intently to pick out all of the sonic nuances and give such informed hypotheses.
Hey, could you guys make a full video discussing either It's All Too Much or She Said She Said? Definitely my two favorite beatles songs guitar tone wise and was wondering your guys thoughts on it, even though I know you've already covered she said she said pretty extensively. Thanks guys and hope to see more great videos!
Very very cool😁 I love those 60’s portable keyboard sounds. I think Lennons keyboard debut on a Beatle song may have been THE NIGHT BEFORE on Help on Hohner Pianet …correct? ..as far as more 60’s sounds , 96 TEARS , Vox, Farfisa?
i have several of these and a Farfisa and now getting ready to refurbish them all. I also have a Roland XP30 with the keyboard of the 60s and 70s expansion card that sounds pretty good too.
The Vox yesterday sounds extremely similar to The Beach Boys 1967 Hawaii Live shows, they did the entire this with some kind of Vox, all there hits, very bizarre, but sounds cool!
I’m pretty sure the intro to A Little Help is the Vox Continental II, it doesn’t sound like the Lowrey or a Hammond, but I could be wrong. Will look through the Sgt. Peppers session dates and songs were often revisited over the course of months for overdubs. The Lowrey DSO-1 (which was The Beatles’ Lowrey) is a very weedy-sounding organ, apart from some harsher sounds like the Harpsichord and Guitar sounds (which were the sounds engaged for the intro to Lucy in the Sky). The Beatles’ particular Lowrey was a Selmer imported and assembled model, which was originally purchased by EMI Abbey Road in 1965 if I’m not mistaken, and wasn’t used much by anyone until the Sgt. Peppers sessions.
I cant imagine putting together one of those Heathkits, tons of tiny parts. I bought an Italian Vox Jaguar that looked brand new, with legs and cases for $50 back in the late 80s, one or 2 keys didnt work and living in a city that didnt have any electric organ repair people or even an amp repairman, I ended up selling it like a dummy
Interesting video. The Continental was plugged into the white Bassman when McCartney did Yesterday in December of 1965. I have a nice picture if you want it.
Great video you guys worked on! Kept watching this video back to back, also have you seen the Beatles’s 1966 tour photos? It seems like the Vox Continental II was in some venues but was not used it for I’m Down, not sure why they brought it in the first place
Many years ago I flew to Cleveland to see Peter Gabriel at the Gund Arena. I also toured the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame where I met the CEO and gave him a piece of my mind about Chicago and Journey not inducted yet; he agreed and gave me his card-which later saved my ass. How so? Upstairs was the John Lennon collection Yoko had lent to the Hall that featured the Vox Continental keyboard. Alone with no one nearby, I untied the velvet rope and stepped up two levels and then, as I hit an E-major 7th chord (no sound; not plugged in), I heard "Hey!" shouted from a distant of about a hundred feet... the security guard was very mad. He ran over and said, "Hey, you can't touch the display and I'm going to ask you to leave now or I'll have to report you to the police." I then showed him the CEO's card and said, "I'm meeting Tom for lunch at 1; we're close friends. Say, should we mention your threat to have me arrested? I am sorry, though." He said, "Look, you can't do that. Please don't touch any of the display items because if anything gets damaged, I'll get blamed and fired. Thanks man" and as he walked away, I realized that I "played" a Beatles instrument!
When I was in my early days of college, I wanted a Connie so bad. Now that 13 years have passed, I had given up on the idea...now I want one again. It may not sound as rich and deep as a B3, but it's got a charm all on its own. Well done, guys!
No, it’s the Lowrey DSO-1. The Beatles’ DSO-1 was a Selmer-assembled UK model. The Gibson organ was made by Lowrey in Chicago, but very few, if any, made it to the UK.
They at least did in this appearance of Summer In The City: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8emBhUD4Znw.htmlsi=WZvy5VwzjlB6rnoL I’d need to investigate a bit more about which records it would actually be on, but I am pretty familiar with the Spoonful, having covered a few of their songs
Yeah, we were trying to quickly get an episode out about Paul’s 1961 Hofner Bass and I was just burnt out on editing last night so I’m finishing it up now and it should hopefully be out tomorrow
So the 60th anniversary of the Ed Sullivan appearance was nearing and you guys decided to do an episode on a keyboard instead of maybe talking about the gear they used on their performances on there. Do you guys even like the beatles?
Lol last episode wasn’t obscure enough and now you want an Ed Sullivan episode? 🤔 All seriousness though, we might do one eventually but there’s a lot more specific gear topics to cover first, and the ‘58 Rick 325 and the Gent are too much to fit in one episode
