its simply the best r&r album ever produced. its the first album i ever owned and it remains my favorite album, topping all others, over the last 50 years. its a history of 20th century music. its fun, its poignant, it rocks and it mystifies. of all the great songs on here there's only two songs i normally skip when listening to it; "sexy sadie" and "revolution 9." the album only added to the myth and legend of the beatles.

It's incredible to think this song came out in 68. Sounds straight outta the 90's. The Beatles are pure genius.

The Beatles had a couple varying accounts of some of the lyrics. According to Harrison, some of the phrases, except the references to the monkey, were taken directly from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's teachings, whose seminars, the Beatles attended in India around 1968. One of his phrases was "Everybody's got something to hide" and another was "Come on, [it] is such a joy". In other words, Come on, everyone is hiding something, so try to accept that, relax, enjoy yourself, take it easy, and be yourself. McCartney believed it to be about heroin or at least drugs in general, due to the reference of monkey, since that's often used as a reference, that you have something weighing heavily on your back or shoulders, such as a drug addiction, and you just can't shake it. Lennon's earlier comments were that it was about his bandmates' apparent disapproval of Yoko Ono, that everyone seemed to be so uptight around the two of them. On the other hand, Lennon's final comments about it, were that it was about the fact that a person can't be one's true self when out in public, that you're always hiding something personal from others.

It comes down to interpretation. Art is usually about interpretation. With paintings, some sculptures and music. It's to invoke a reaction, a feeling...and most people feel differently about it. The ONLY one who know for sure is the originator. As it turns out, not even they can come together (see what I did there?) on the meaning.
@mikeking7710
@mikeking7710 Год назад
@@ClaudeJordan-rh4zx Exactly right. That's why I didn't just mention Lennon's thoughts about his lyrics, but those of Harrison & McCartney as well. I didn't find any info about Ringo's thoughts about it, or I would've mentioned that too.

I'm sure John wrote this in reaction to a cartoon in a British newspaper (daily mail) which depicted yoko as a monkey on johns back. It outraged John as it was insulting a racist

John's explanation in an interview was as follows: It means really that one cannot be absolutely oneself in public, because the fact that you're in public makes you… you have to have some kind of defence, or whatever it is.”

That's a great song! John's vocal, Paul's bass playing, George's guitar, Ringo's simple drumming, the whoops and hollers in the background, the "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon" at the end there. It's just a fun song!

I was in 9th grade when The White Album was released. It was my best Christmas present that year (or any year, for that matter) but ... what a shocker: their albums had gotten progressively more daring and more experimental. Then ... without warning, a return to rock 'n roll. And what delicious rock 'n roll it was: basic and melodic and totally groove-drenched hit songs, two albums worth !!

One of my favorite tracks off the White Album, just straight-ahead rock and roll. It's not impossible that the "Monkey" John is singing about is slang for heroin. But like many of John's songs, we can use anyone or anything as the "Monkey" John is singing about. That's the beauty of his songwriting.
@cjmacq-vg8um
@cjmacq-vg8um Год назад
lennon used to complain about how the press criticized yoko calling her "a monkey on john's back." meaning she was a detriment, a disadvantage to john. so the "monkey" john is singing about is yoko. he's poking fun of the criticisms.
@KennyY-bh3zl

Half the Beatles song writers were staunchly against how code wordy Christianity is so well know to be, leaving most holy book believers (not readers) to TALK IN TONGES.
