Someone else has already commented on this point but I would like to add something myself.... I have a request for Amy and Vlad. I think to interpret the feeling of many fans by saying that a song like ‘She said she said’ cannot be skipped. It is one of the most original and significant ones in Revolver. Even Bernstein spent very flattering words for this song. This also applies to other masterpieces such as Day Tripper, Paperback Writer and Rain. These songs have an important role in the phase where the Beatles are reaching maturity.

Your take on the song's opening being like the sun rising, and the ending being like a prismatic refraction in all directions at once, are the exact images that have played in my head ever since the first time I heard the song. I would not be surprised if this were the common reaction that most people have of this song. I believe that it is this unspoken impressionism that puts the song in the psychedelic category.

You asked is this really psychedelic rock? And then you went on to explain why this is psychedelic rock, perhaps without realizing it. This song compares well to “Eyes of the World” by Grateful Dead which you listened to last year. Such a fabulous review! But so much more to say - Bernstein was right to take note of it. 1. I consider this genre to be English Music Hall style, reimagined. 2. Definitely a Paul song - John's world view is a bit too sardonic to be this cheerful (though I detect John's input in lines like "burns my feet as they touch the ground). 3. The piano descending four notes after lines like "I feel good" feel like a musical punctuation mark (period!) to make that part of the lyric a declarative sentence by itself - or the piano simply adding its assent to the thought. Sorry, I could go on and on. Your comment near the end is key to the accolades accorded Revolver - these songs are both fresh and sound timeless on the first listen. The genius of the band just keeps growing.

I think this song has elements of "old timey" music from the '20's or '30's. So, it has to be McCartney, who's father was also a musician and, one from close to that era. Obviously, young Paul absorbed some of his father's musical influences. That influence can also be heard in other McCartney songs like, "When I'm Sixty-four", "Honey Pie", "Martha My Dear" and others. I've always heard that John Lennon was not a fan of this, particular, bent in Paul's songwriting.

@@fromchomleystreet Do you mean the F-sharp chord? That is functioning as a dominant chord for the following B chord, so might be more appropriate to call it a tertiary dominant than a chromatic mediant as it's functioning here.

Don't worry about all the complaints of skipping various Beatles songs, Vlad. One hundred and fifty is PLENTY to get a good appreciation of the band and their music. Good grief, folks, I know you adore the Beatles, but be grateful they are covering so many! (Besides, "She Said She Said" just sounds like the weird, uninspired acid trip that it is. For psychedelic rock, I'd rather listen to something like "Glass Onion" any day. jmho)

A bit confusing. Songs, that are mediocre to average by Beatles standards, like "I need you", "Here, there and everywhere", "Good Day Sunshine" are discussed, high class (psychedelic) rockers like "I'm down", "Day Tripper", "Paperback writer", "Rain", and now "She said, she said" are left out, or is there more to come?

I'm hip to the nonsense of copyright strikes hence the gobbledygook sound you use to fill in.....I'm sorry to inform you I OWN that gobbledygook sound and you will be hearing from my lawyers, Dewey, Cheetham & Howe. Otherwise, a good take on your part young grasshopper. Context: Beatles contrary to the BS that they had "hundreds of songs" written were actually out of songs after their 3rd record a Hard Day's Night. They did covers on the next LP. Anyhoo Paul was not above copping from others and in this case it was Daydream by Lovin' Spoonful. The style is Paul's pseudo vaudeville honky tonk jug bandy crap going back to childhood that he'd play on piano in front of the older folks at home to ingratiate himself as usual into a scene he wanted to be liked in. Songs like When I'm Sixty-Four, Lovely Rita and Yellow Submarine - pure pablum the stuff John would hate. You could review She Said She Said but Leonard Bernstein ("Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable") kind of well, you don't follow him and anyway it's only a dumb 3 chord song and the gimmick is it dips to a 4th minor V chord in 3/4 waltz time for a nanosecond in the bridge - big whoop except it was kind of unique back then although no kids in real time back then gave a sh•t about technical nonsense.

Superior to most? I agree if we are limiting it to the sixties. Their rivals at that time would have been the Kinks and the Loving Spoonful and the Rolling Stones (some people would disagree that the Beatles were better than the Stones) etc. You could say they were the most influential band due to their effects on music and culture. But getting into the seventies when rock was full throttle, I think there were better bands. I was born in 1955 and lived through that era. I have the utmost respect for the Beatles but they have a particular sound which I cannot listen to for extended periods of time. For example, I couldn't sit down and listen to an album at once.
