The Beatles in the recording studio (April 14th 1966) Paperback Writer 

The main thing I remember about experiencing the Beatles in real time was that you had no idea what their next single would sound like...

That riff, one of the greatest.

According to Geoff Emerick, Paul came into the studio one day and said, “Gather ‘round, lads, I’ve got our next number one hit.” Be nice to have that type of confidence.

55 years ago they recorded this incredible song. It would still be awesome if it was only just released today!

B/W with "Rain". One of the greatest singles in the history of Rock. Beatles were on top of their game.

They were so young and creative, just inventing one wonderful song after another, and always finding new paths.

The Beatles were way beyond anyone else of their time and since. Those guys had such an immeasurable talent. Lets face it Most of their music is so mind bogglingly brilliant it's hard to take in. And this track is one of their very best. I just love Pauls bass riff and the harmony vocals are sublime.

There are several modern guitar effects pedals that have been designed to sound like the overdriven Vox 7120 amplifiers from the Revolver era. The distortion on Paperback, Taxman, and She Said is just amazing for 1966.

I'm glad I was alive to witness their greatness. There will never be a better band on this planet.

Ringo, was such an undercredited drummer, IMO... And, George was a PHENOMENAL guitarist-!!! And, everyone knows how clever and talented John and Paul were back then-!!! The Beatles are still INDESCRIBABLE to this VERY DAY... (Uncanny, IMO). 😁👍✌

One of their very best songs, in my opinion.

The lead sings "paperback writer" while the harmony sings "frere jacques" and it fits so well very few people even notice it. Beatles playing a joke while creating a song that has no equal.

I so love this song, one of my favorite Beatles as well as any music. everything in this song is amazing; arrangement, bass, rhythm, lead, drums, harmonies, backup vocals, lead vocal are all excellent. This is one of the best rock songs of all time.

I've heard this song hundreds of times but only now discovered that John and George are singing 'Frere a Jacques' under one of the verses. I am stunned.

There may never again be a music writing team as talented as Lennon and McCartney

McCartney had this amazing skill to take a relatively simple idea and make it into a work of musical art! Paperback Writer is just one example. He actually listened to a composition by Bach.. and from that thought of the riff starting off Blackbird, White Album song. Beatles are the best!

So cool to get a visual of them working together. You listen to some of the post-Beatle interviews from John (primarily the one's where that woman who shall remain nameless is in the vicinity) and some of the authors looking to sell a book or an article and you miss out on something elemental. Above and beyond all of it, they were friends. I've done my best to avoid regrets but there are two things I lament never having a chance to do in this lifetime, fly in space and see the Beatles work, either in the studio or on the stage. But I am grateful for videos such as these. It's not quite live but it'll do for now. Thanks for posting. 👌

First time I heard this coming out of a speaker outside the door of a shop in Union City, New Jersey (USA), I knew the Beatles had changed and gotten really cool .

Only one word required here ! Epic !!

Take Lennon/McCartney and add in Harrison, who really started coming into his own about this time. How many groups could boast having three great songwriters. That’s what makes the Beatles the best ever. Add in the harmonies? Unbeatable.

And Paul McCartney's bass riff is the best I've ever heard.

On take one the instruments sound basically like the record. They mixed carefully the sound of each track before recording, EQ , compression, levels, so the final mix was just fader moves, adding effects, and all the kick drum, overheads, snare, etc, were already mixed.

I was a 13yo teenager on a class trip to an ice skating rink in the city and was about to give up on ever mastering the art till Paperback Writer came over the inhouse loudspeaker. I was both Torvil AND Dean for 3 minutes while it played!

If that was April 14, 1966, the shot of Paul holding the Stones' new Aftermath album must have been a pre-release copy (which I'm sure they swapped a lot of, friends that they were), as that album wasn't released to the public until the following day.

The promotional video clip is quite amazing both in terms of music and in video quality, looks even today as if it was a recent work

I like the photo (3:40) of Paul holding the Stones' Aftermath album. Wonder if it was playing in his headphones. I had read the Ringo had humorously suggested that the Beatles name the album that ended up being called Revolver, After Geography.

I love how they are singing “ fara jaka” (sp?) in the background.

Funny, always loved this one. Was 7 when it came out and somehow I had the 45, and later I became a paperback writer and attribute some of that odyssey to this song.

So much goodness in this song... I have always liked those two rapid "machine gun" style rolls Ringo puts in the space between the two halves of each verse. Any other drummer would have filled that space up with any sort of good, competent drum fill, but not Ringo. Every time I hear them I'm mesmerized at how they don't seem to be on any particular beat and you can't really find the "1" in there, and yet he comes out of the fill with band dead on. It makes those gaps simply fascinating.

It's a song about John. He published a book. And one day John came into the studio and said: "Gather round, all you clowns, let me hear yoy say: 'Hey, you've got to hide your love away'."

I love the early take of this song too bad this early I’ll take us not released it’s a great one here in the early versions of paperback writer before the awesome overdubs on the lead vocals effects and I love the song that doesn’t fade out.

Can hear the piano through a leslie cabinet at the end. Not sure this was on final mix. According to RTB book The Beatles possibly used the leslie built into a Lowrey organ rather than a leslie cabinet, especially on Revolver.

Best thing about the photos this day was that they captured Lennon using a PEPBOX WEM RUSH fuzz box as his guitar effect, which fit nicely against the Vox amp's built-in tremelo effect on the rhythm guitar.
