KSO, the expression *"and how"* is obsolete today, but was quite common when this song came out. It simply means an affirmation of what was said right before it. So, the line, "You know I believe, and how", translated to today would read something like, "You know I believe, I really do". I should say, however, that the way George used it here was not the most common way it was used back then. The expression, "And how", was most commonly used as an answer of agreement to something someone else said. For instance, if someone said to me, "KSO is a foxy lady.", I would agree by saying, usually with and exclamation, "And how!". Whereas today's young generation would instead answer either with, "Right??!!", or, "Totally!".
@MrDiddyDee
@MrDiddyDee 2 года назад
I would add it's an exclamation saying how deep and really invested you are in whatever it is.

Interesting! This is also a common expression here in Brazil, with the same meaning, usually with an exclamation point : "E como!"

Cool, a new Brazilian phrase. The only Brazilian I knew was, "Oy to the bang?!", which means, "Hi, how are you?!"

"And how" is just a declaration of the former. They sing, "You know, I believe" which in this case the hidden finish to the phrase "in love" then the additive phrase which was common back in those days "and how" to signify that belief. Yes, I could have explained it simpler but I wanted to polish to sound more educated. 😂

*"And how"* actually has a definition in the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: (adverb) "used to emphasize the preceding idea". We don't hear it used much nowadays, but more so in older movies. If George Harrison were speaking, instead of singing, he would likely say it as an exclamation: "you know I believe, *and how!"* Since I was a little kid and first heard this song, I've always found something oddly lyrical about the parts where that guitar riffs come in. What I mean by this is that the riff seems to take the place of words and actually feels like the riff *is* words. For me, it's a very unusual sensation, in a good way, that is unlike any other song I know: like the guitar is talking in that repeated riff. There's a je ne sais quoi in the riff, and the song is also about "je ne sais quoi", "an appealing quality that cannot be adequately described or expressed", in the woman who is the subject of the song.

This is George's best song from his time in The Beatles, and arguably the best Beatles song ever. He was forever competing with Lennon and McCartney for album space but whenever he got space on their later albums, his stuff was normally gold! From the same Abbey Road album he contributed Here Comes the Sun. Sublime in every way!!!

Although John and Paul were the main songwriters, George hit the mark EVERY TIME he wrote a Beatles song. And yes,these women were their real life partners. George's wife Patty Boyd is known as music's greatest muse. SO MANY songs have been written about her alone! She would later inspire Eric Clapton to write "Layla" about her. She would later marry him. Yet it did not break up George and Eric's brother-like bond. In fact Clapton would later say jokingly that him and George were "Husbands-in-laws". Even Sinatra called it the greatest love song ever written. Now THAT'S a high praise coming from Ol' Blue Eyes himself!

@@B.R.0101 Oh it's a fact alright. You can watch on youtube a few interviews with George and he is not pleased at all that his material was never really considered to be up with Lennon and McCartney and some people might agree but 20/20 being what it is and water under the bridge and all that now that George is gone but you have to admit George had a lot more to add to the Beatles music than the guys originally thought, if they had given him the chance . Peace and love :)
@B.R.0101

@@Newfie-zc7ug inner Light, 'Within Without you' and all those songs and all that Indian music and sounds were put into the Beatles music because they didn't push George Harrison out of the door, instead they accepted it all because they were interested in that. The attitude was bad sometimes, as any other band, and also in Abbey Road he didn't find many problems. In this latest movie Get Back we can see how I Me Mine wasn't well accepted by John Lennon but we can hear this song in the final Let It Be (thanks to Phil Spector) as well Taxman, Old Brown Shoe, Savoy Truffles, While My Guitar Gently Weeps ecc... Just the attitude wasn't always so welcoming but, we see it, both Paul McCartney and John Lennon were so deeply involved into their own worked that wasn't absolutely possible to have the mind to pay attention to the indecision of George Harrison... Btw, for sure, Peace everybody!

KSO - if you liked this song, you might check out "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin. The first few bars are.similar to "Something." George Harrison of the Beatles challenged Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin to write a ballad and Jimmy answered him back by writing "Rain Song" which quotes "Something." I'd recommend checking out the 1973 live video of "The Song Remains the Same/Rain Song" for the full.whopping effect.
